We grow using organic methods, but the farm is not currently certified organic. Every year we ask our customers if they'd like us to be certified. What we have heard from folks in the past is that our methods are important to them, but the certification is not. Everyone we grow for - our CSA members and the chef's - can come to the farm to see for themselves how things are grown. That transparency builds trust and is the basis for our relationships with the folks we grow for. We invite you to come out and visit our farm and see for yourself!!
On our farm we're working towards TRUE sustainability and that means thinking about the triple bottom line including the people, the planet and the profits. The techniques we use on our farm that move us closer to this goal each year include...
The People: Providing fresh healthy produce to families year round improves the health and well being of our communities. We also strive to improve conditions for workers on our farm and pay a living wage. In addition we donate thousands of pounds of veggies to our local food bank every year.
The Planet: We use cover crops between vegetable rotations, beneficial insects, drip irrigation and conservation tillage techniques. This holistic farming system improves the tilth and fertility of the farmland. It also protects the woods, wetlands and communities that surround our farms.
The Profits: We have been working on detailed enterprise budgets for the farm to help us understand how we can be more efficient therefor more profitable. Any increases in profitability will allow us to circle back and invest more in our people, our community and more sustainable farming methods for the environment!!
