This year we caught the bug for some of the new, glamorous Asian melons like Tigger and Swan Lake(see separate product listings). But we really want to promote the native varieties, many of which have become rare and even endangered.
Here are some of the best cantaloupe/honeydew melons we have grown, selected in part for their rarity, but also because they have grown quite well for us in the Midwest.
Ananas: rare, white-fleshed muskmelon. 5-lb fruits; an outstanding 19th c. heirloom.
Early Hanover: delicious green-fleshed honeydew melons, exceptionally sweet. Old heirloom introduced in Virginia in 1895.
Iroquois: Large deep-orange-fleshed melon, superlative flavor! This 5-7-lb melon grows well in the Midwest and Northeast.
Jenny Lind: a petite green-fleshed muskmelon that was very popular from the 1840s, named for the famous Swedish singer. Luscious, 1-2 lb turban-shaped fruits are very sweet .
MIssouri Gold: A very rare, old Missouri heirloom, dating back to the mid-19th century. Sweet orange flesh and produces lots of 2-3 lb. fruits.
Old-Time Tennessee: another very old heirloom that was almost lost in modern times. Orange-fleshed, oblong fruits are 12-14 lbs., among the sweetest of all melons.
