A group of residents from across northern Allegany County are working to open a local food co-op in Houghton called the Allegany Harvest Cooperative Market. The idea of starting a co-op came shortly after the citgo mini-mart closed in 2009, and dozens of volunteers have been working since then to get the venture off the ground. The market, which now has a target open date for the spring of 2012, will focus primarily on selling local, all-natural, organic, bulk, and fair trade foods-- in addition to ethically raised meats (pasture raised, free range) and regular staples such as milk, cheese, and eggs. In order to open, Allegany Harvest Market is seeking member-owners to make a small equity investment in exchange for a decision-making vote, special discounts, possible future dividends, and other benefits.
