As you probably know, Alpacas are not native to the United States. They originate in the Andes Mountains of South America where they graze native grasses, weeds, shrubs and trees. Alpacas have been domesticated for over 5,000 years and produce the softest, finest animal fiber!
Here at River Valley Farm, our friends - Paco, Pepe and Hershey spend their time munching the sweet green summer grass and a variety of pasture plants. They mainly eat fermented hay with a little bit of corn on the side during the winter months and plenty of clean fresh water to wash it all down!
We believe this close to 100% natural diet helps to keep their fleeces so luxuriously soft. The only way to get closer to their natural diet would be to fly them back to the Andes. And we would miss them...
Their roving was produced by Ancient Threads Woolen Mill of Grafton, NY where they are committed to producing a high quality product in an ecologically friendly manner. The raw fleece has been gently washed using a vegetable oil based soap, air dried and then carded into roving - ready for your next handspinning or craft project.
All our Alpaca roving is blended 80/20 with our own Cormo wool to allow for memory in the resulting yarn. Garments made with our blended alpaca/cormo roving won't loose their shape when carefully handwashed.
