Alternative Roots Farm is a certified organic family farm and orchard offering diversified produce through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Shares, Farm Shares, farmers' market and direct sales. ARF organic apples are available through direct sales, Apple Shares and wholesale.
The farm sits on 4 lovely acres in rural Madelia, Brown County--1.5 acres of cropland support vegetables, fruits and cover crops; 0.3 acre is planted into a native prairie buffer strip; about 1 acre is a young, developing orchard; and just over 0.5 acre is dedicated pasture for our heritage hogs. The rest of the land supports our home, buildings and pastured laying hens.
Our off-farm apple orchard is just outside of New Ulm. We began renovating this established orchard in 2012, bringing it back into production and good health. Our home orchard is planted to apples, pears, plums and a peach tree! Currently we only have apples in production, as the young, grafted trees take a few years to start producing.
For 2015 we will be growing just over a half-acre of vegetables, with the rest of our cropland in pasture/cover crops to work on weed management and soil health. We continually work to manage and develop our farm-site incorporating wildlife habitat and conservation practices. Attracting wildlife promotes ecological biodiversity, strengthens our environment and aids in pest control.
We specialize in heirloom produce, not just tomatoes but many other vegetable and apples too! This is of importance to us because of the superior quality of nutrition and taste, as well as to preserve heritage and diversity. The vegetables we grow include your regular staples (i.e. carrots, beans, broccoli), as well as some other items that may be less common to customers--our family favorite being Brussels sprouts!
Our chickens and pigs support the cycling of nutrients on our farm, as well adding to our joy and quality of life. The laying hens provide fresh eggs that fuel the farmers through the season; egg sales are available by contacting us directly. We farrow heritage pigs on pasture, which we sell as whole hogs (limited availability) and as weaner pigs to others passionate about raising animals humanely; the pigs are a BIG part of organic pest management at the orchard!
We are passionate about bringing fresh, nutritious, quality produce to our local community; as well as growing nutritious food in a way that is in harmony with nature and conservation-minded.
