Anise Hyssop is a perennial herb plant. It is a member of the Agastache family, and is a distant cousin of the mints; some varieties of hyssop are native to parts of the continental United States. Anise leaves smell of licorice when crushed, and are used for flavoring various dishes and for making tea. Anise extract is used in flavoring candy and other confections.

According to folk medicine tradition, a tea of anise leaf was used to help treat colds. Anise hyssop flowers attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Anise hyssop is also used as a deer detractor.

These plants grow 4 to 5 foot tall, and have lovely purple flowers. They grow very easily from seed. Anise Hyssop should be started indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date, or can be sown directly into your garden area after the danger of last frost in your area has passed. After the plants have become established they require very little care. Anise hyssop will spread by self-sowing.
