Apollo Farms is run on family land, once part of the large Jones family orchards of Laingsburg. Alex, with his mother Pam, neighbor Jane and other friendly helping hands are attempting to revitalize the farmland beginning with a small market garden focused on gourmet greens and other unique salad accoutrements.Alex's passion for food has led him to work on farms in Colorado, New Zealand and New Hampshire, line cook in a Gourmet magazine accomplished restaurant, and currently places him as the volunteer coordinator at the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Pam works as a respiratory therapist and Jane as a special education teacher for Shiawassee RESD.
After the apple farm operation went under in the early-mid 90's, some of the land was able to stay within the family. Apollo Farms currently has around 130 acres, 70 or so of which is leased to another farmer used in conventional methods, 30 or so is wooded, 8 acres of old apple orchard, some mixed swamp and lowland area, and a 3/4 acre market plot. Half of the market plot is in raised beds (all i could dig by myself this year) and the other half will be in more traditional rows. Apollo Farms hopes to cultivate the land into a long term viable solution to the lack of growing space. A farm is a place cultivation that does not need to be limited to plants. With this in mind we hope to grow keeping Permaculture, Sustainability, and Functionality at the forefront. We are currently open to ideas and suggestions on how to proceed.
A true start up farm. No money, no equipment. Plenty of land and desire.
