Gulf Coast sheep are descendents of Spanish flocks of sheep that were brought to the New World by explorers and settlers in the 1500's. The Spanish sheep in the Southeast were shaped primarily by natural selection, gradually becoming adapted to the heat and humidity of the environment. The Gulf Coast sheep are characterized by the lack of wool on their faces, necks, legs, and bellies. Unfortunately, with the introduction of other, more productive sheep breeds in the Southeast, the Gulf Coast sheep were discarded by most farmers. The breed is now alive due to the preservation efforts of a few southern families

Our project began as a homestead. We were looking to live a simpler life. As we cultivated herbs and tended our trees, we began to produce more than we could eat. We eased into selling to neighbors and friends and markets. We use no pesticides or herbicides -- we are a no-spray farm. Our goals and practices are a synthesis of biodynamic rhythms and permaculture concepts, encouraging and fostering diversity in plants, animals and wildlife throughout the farm.
Maple Gorge Farm is located in the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas, and features lush pastures and scenic, rocky woodland. Named for the prevalent maples and the rugged terrain of the wooded part, we use the more level land to graze our flock of sheep and dairy goats, a few hens and a guard donkey. Two guardian dogs and a few pigs round out our family farm.
