The rich, reddish-black plumage and red comb of the "Old-Type" Rhode Island Red chicken is an iconic symbol of American agriculture. It is a successful dual-purpose bird, and an excellent-tempered farm chicken, with a highly productive brown egg-laying rate. Since the 1940's, the Rhode Island Red has been selectively bred for more efficient egg production, becoming smaller, lighter colored, and less broody as a result. Of greatest conservation interest are the "Old-Type" Rhode Island Reds, which are larger, darker, and more broody. The "Old-Type" Rhode Island Red chicken has an incredibly rich flavor that is most appropriate for (and best released in) stews
We are a small, sustainable family farm working hard to produce
good clean food for our family and others who share our same interests and
concerns about our food, our health, the future generations to come and our
land. We offer free range eggs from healthy, happy hens, pastured poultry (including heritage breed turkeys and a slow growing broiler), grass-fed lamb, beef and goat, pasture raised pigs.
Try our variety of freshly harvested, nutritious and delicious fruits and veggies grown with care on our small family farm in Dexter, Michigan. We are not certified organic at this time but everything is authentically grown and visits to the farm to see our operation can be scheduled.
