Jacob's Cattle bean, also called a Trout bean or an Appaloosa bean, is a Prince Edward Island heirloom. Legend has it that it was a gift from Maine's Passamaquoddy Indians to Joseph Clark, the first white child born in Lubec, Maine. It is a plump, white and red speckled, kidney-shaped bean with vivid maroon splashes. It is full-flavored, holds its shape under long cooking, and stands up well to plenty of seasoning. The bean has a rich aroma. It is a little tannic on the tongue and tastes almost like a green bean with a slightly fruity aftertaste.
We are a small family run farm that strives to have better than organic practices in the raising of our food. Our goal is to offer the most natural food for our family and neighbors as an alternative to processed foods from the store.
Our farm's produce is available for sale through our CSA, farmers markets and farm stand.
We specialize in heritage breed animals and open pollinated heirloom vegetables.
At Tierra Vegetables, we're committed to growing diversified vegetables, fruits and wool products of the very highest quality through sustainable farming practices. We are now also growing heirloom dried beans and dried corn for corn bread (etc) and polenta.
We are a small farm dedicated to the preservation and promotion of our world's crop diversity. We offer heirloom fruit trees and vegetable seeds for sale through our website and at local farmer's markets. We have hundreds of fruit and vegetable varieties in our collection that we hope to make available in the coming years. New for 2012, we will be offering a CSA that emphasizes our rare and heirloom fruits and vegetables. Members will also get fruit trees, vegetable seeds and much more!!
The Farm will not be in business as a CSA for 2009 and possibly 2010--we have lost the land we rented from a local dairy farmer due to divorce, and are scrambling to get land for the 2010 season-----Thanks to everyone who has supported us in our endeavor, and special thanks to those members who are willing to hang around 'til we find our feet again!!!
