The original Black Spanish turkey made the voyage to the Americas with early
European colonists. Once here, the variety was crossed with Eastern wild
turkeys, which formed the basis for the Black turkey variety in America,
named for its lustrous, metallic black plumage. Up until the early 1900s,
Blacks were bred in large numbers along the East Coast, their popularity
enhanced by selection for a calm disposition, rapid growth, and early
maturation. The Standard weight is 23 pounds for young toms and 14 pounds
for young hens. Heritage turkeys like the Black are known for their
exceptional flavor and texture.
We are a small farm operation raising goats, poultry, rabbits and produce. We are specializing in "heritage breeds" and "heirloom varieties" and most of our production is utilizing "pasture raised" or "free-range" management. Our goat herd is two fold, we raise meat goats (Boer crosses with Nubian or Alpine) and Pygmy goats (we have some small Dwarf Nigerian animals) which are sold as companion animals.
We are a family farm using sustainable farming practices. We strive for balance and using natural ways of replenishing the land. Our heritage breeds of poultry and livestock live in rotational pastures and paddocks allowing them to exhibit their natural behaviors. We believe strongly in humane animal treatment and allowing animals to live natural, happy lives. Our sheep are Navajo-Churro which are descendents from the first sheep brought to the Americas by the Spanish.
