The origins of the Speckled Lettuce date back to Holland in the 17th century. From Holland, the lettuce was brought to Germany, where it was widely cultivated. Finally, in the late 1790s, the Speckled lettuce was brought to North America, first arriving in Waterloo County, Ontario. The name comes from the German â??forellenschluss,â?? which means "speckled like a trout". The lettuce is a loose-leaf variety that has juicy, thick, light green leaves that are speckled with maroon quarter-inch dots. Turner Farm is a 60-acre certified organic farm in the northeast corner of Hamilton County. We operate four CSA programs (a 50-member vegetable CSA, a meat CSA, a flower CSA, and a winter vegetable CSA). We also sell at the Madeira Farmers Market on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. till 7 p.m., and year-round directly from the farm.
