The Algonquian squash (or pumpkin) originated in New England and was historically grown by the Abenaki people of Maine, New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts. Algonquian squash was among the foodstuffs Lewis and Clark traded for with the Mandan Indians in the early 19th century. This oblong-shaped squash is best when harvested green, and allowed to turn orange in storage. The Algonquin is meaty but not stringy; and has a smoky, nutty, rich and sweet taste. It is excellent for pies, perhaps become it is less wet and heavy than many other types of squash.
