This heirloom is not actually a cherry, but rather a small ground tomato. The fruits were recorded in horticultural literature as early as 1837 in Pennsylvania and are still common today at roadside stands in late summer. This outstanding Polish variety is prized for its clean flavor, with hints of vanilla and pineapple. Because of their high pectin count, the Ground Cherries can be used for preserves, pies, over ice cream or in fresh fruit salads.

Established in 2005, we are a small, family-owned farm. We started this venture to create an economically and ecologically self-sustaining homestead that provides an ongoing connection to the land for ourselves, our families and our guests. We raise high quality, chemical-free vegetables, herbs, chickens (eggs) and bees (honey & wax) which are sold through the Des Moines Farmers Market and our CSA.

Want humanely produced eggs? Most hens on our farm are rescued from commercial egg operations or locally from the community and are allowed to live out their full lives. They eat no-soy organic feed and fresh organic produce, can roam in ample outdoor areas, take dust baths, lay in the sun, and catch worms and bugs. We protect the hens from predators, but do not kill wildlife. The chickens receive good medical care if they are hurt or sick (our farm has a poultry vet).
