Balm of Gilead is better known as the Cottonwood Tree. The trees are very tall so the buds are quite difficult to obtain. The buds are only available in early spring. Then they disappear till the following spring.
The ancient Romans gave this plant it's name Calendula. They observed that the flowers were in bloom on the first day or calends,
of every month, and so named them.
The Romans grew the flowers because they were so pretty
as well as their power to treat Scorpion bites.
Calendula at that time was used to treat headaches, toothaches, red eyes, and fevers.
The early colonists collected the buds of the Cottonwood tree in the springtime and mashed them into lard or even Grizzly bear oil, or Black Bear lard as a base for their Balm of Gilead Salve.
