Basil - Genovese Herb A popular variety for making pesto sauce and for flavoring vegetables and fish. Large 2 inch long, dark green leaves have a spicy-sweet fragrance and taste.
Sow seeds outdoors in spring in a warm, sunny location after all danger of frost is past. A well-drained, light, rich soil is ideal. Keep soil moist. For earliest harvest, start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost is past and soil is warm. Sow at a Depth of 1/4 inch. Thin seedlings when they are 2 to 3 inches tall to 12 inches apart.
Begin to harvest leaves when flower buds start to appear. Continue harvesting up to the first frost. Pinch back plant to encourage bushy growth, use the pinchings as a seasoning. To preserve, freeze the leaves in loose bunches or add whole to oils.
