Basil Leaf (Ocimum basilicum)
Studies show that basil stimulates the immune system by increasing production of disease-fighting antibodies by up to 20 percent. This may help explain its supposed effectiveness against bacteria and its traditional uses in treating many infectious illnesses.
Basil oil can be used as a treatment for antibiotic resistant infections such as Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Pseudomonas.
The Chinese use basil to treat snakebites and insect bites. The essential oil is antibacterial, and drops of basil oil may relieve ear infections as well.
There are some indications basil oil may help restore immune function damaged by stress. Basil oil also helps the active ingredients of other herbs more readily penetrate the skin when basil oil is added to ointments, liniments, and salves.
Dried basil leaf can be added directly to food or drunk as a tea
to relieve flatulence and fullness.
For an infusion, use 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried leaves per cup of boiling water. Steep 10 to 20 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups a day and enjoy basil's rich, warm aroma and minty, mildly peppery taste.
