Lemon Balm (Monarda citriodora), is a beautiful old-timey plant, also know as Horsemint, wild or lemon bergamot.
Bee Balm is a perennial, upright herbaceous plant, indigenous to North America. As the name implies, bees love it, as do butterflies, and humming birds. Also known as wild bergamot.
This variety grows 3 - 4 foot tall, and will be covered with lovely purple, fragrant flowers all summer.
Seed can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date and transplanted into your garden, in a sunny location with well drained soil.
History Native Americans have used bee balm as a medicinal herb for centuries. It was used as an antiseptic, to aid in the healing of external wounds, and also as a tisane to treat mouth and throat disorders. (NOTE: This information is included for reference only and is not intended as medical advice. The FDA has not substantiated this information.)
Bee balm is the source for Thymol, which is used in commercial mouth washes.
Bee balm leaves can also be used in cooking or as a tea. They taste like a mixture of spearmint, peppermint and oregano. Get creative!!
