Belfast Co-op offers trip to Thirty Acre Farm in Whitefield

Belfast Co-op - Belfast, Maine

On Sunday, October 14, the Belfast Co-op is hosting a trip to visit family-owned and operated Thirty Acre Farm in Whitefield. Transportation will be provided by Waldo CAP, departing from the Belfast Co-op at 12:30 p.m. and returning by 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required; seating is limited.

When hosts Simon and Jane Frost bought their small family farm in the fall of 2004, it had not been worked for over forty years, and the old pastures had returned to mixed hardwood forest. They purchased three piglets to help clear the land, two of which became the base of their breeding herd. Their pig herd has helped them clear eight acres, five of which are in vegetable, herb and flower production.

In 2002 they began producing and selling lacto-fermented foods from biodynamic cabbage bought in Canada. They've since built a commercial kitchen and more than double their production each year. They now make more than 20,000 lbs of sauerkraut, ruby kraut, kimchi, gingered carrots and sour dill pickles, and grow over 95% of the ingredients.

This tour will provide opportunities to explore their farm, meet their pig herd and visit their commercial kitchen with plenty of time for questions. Their will also be an opportunity to purchase some of their lacto-fermented products.

Pre-register at any register at the Belfast Co-op. The cost is $10 to help cover transportation costs. You can also reserve a seat by phone using a debit or credit card by calling (207) 338-2532. The community-owned Belfast Co-op, located at 123 High Street in downtown Belfast, is open daily from 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. All are welcome.
