The root of Black Cohosh has long been used as a Native American remedy for painful periods and cramping. More recently, it has been used by modern medicine for symptoms associated with menopause, in particular hot flashes. It has also been used historically for rheumatism, inflammatory arthritis and muscle pain.

Black cohosh is native to Canada and the eastern US states, growing as far south as Florida. It prefers shady spots in woods and shrubby areas.
