Black Turtle Beans are grown at Salamander Springs Farm in eastern Kentucky using absolutely no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The beans are hand harvested and sorted to dry in late summer and are shelled throughout the fall and winter. A staple in Latin American cuisine, black beans are a wholesome and nutritious (high-iron) source of protein.
We are a small-scale un-mechanized farm. Our soil has not been tilled into powdery dust, instead is treated with lots of TLC, cover crops and organic mulches. It is teaming with life and organic nutrients which feed our crops--instead of petroleum-based chemical fertilizers!
A delicious recipe is included on the package. Cooked beans freeze well so make a big pot and have quick meals later. Leftovers also make yummy refried beans for tacos or burritos!
Salamander Springs Farm grain & bean fields, market gardens, orchard, nut trees and pasture are being developed and managed based on permaculture principles.
