spring is really here!

Looks like spring is finally REALLY HERE!!  yea!  Hostas are up and unfurling, kale is growing like a weed, daffodils are bent over, peas, lettuce, herbs... all are starting to pop up and be visible!  I am sooo over this winter, it was the worst in a while for this area for sure! Just wanted to stop in and say HAPPY SPRING to everyone!  Happy gardening! :)

Brrr good morning!

Hi all, haven't posted recently, been too busy to even remember! However, wanted to say the Kale is growing strong.... and onion and garlic for next year are going strong! Collards are up, wish they'd grow a little faster.... It's kinda cool this morning, brisk, had a little ice on the birdbath, but not enough to stop the birds if they want a drink! Been out gathering more moonflower seed.... got plenty if you need to order some from the store for stocking stuffers! :)  Plenty of lavender ones, too.... Hope everyone has a great day!   deb

Harvest!

Been checking to see what's coming in, and low and behold there's squash! So guess what I have in my salad today??? Also, arugula and kale still, and fresh radishes!  Love radishes, they are so FAST to grow! (28 days to harvest!) And they are good for you, too!  Can't wait for the green beans, maybe this weekend i'll be able to eat a few! Hope your gardens are all producing some great produce, too!  have a great day!

Happy Wednesday!

The collards, cabbage and broccoli are gaining on the kale now that the weather has turned a bit.  I think they've grown an inch or two since I last checked two days ago! Exciting! Everyone have a blessed day!  debbie

fall crops

Well, I am learning! It seems that the row covers help here in the deep south....when trying to grow fall crops of kale, collards, cabbage, broccoli, and other various things....I experimented with not using them versus using them. The sun/heat killed the uncovered seedlings in ONE DAY! And it wasn't even 90 that day. So....i will continue to use row covers for the fall "cool weather" crops....hopefully I will benefit and reap the harvest! Anyone else have any other suggestions/advice for growing cool weather crops in Georgia in the fall, let me know! Everyone have a great day! :) debbie

Fall is in the air?

Hi everyone! Haven't written in a while - been pretty busy what with vacations, grandkids and such....not to mention the garden!  Speaking of garden, I have baby collards, broccoli, spaghetti squash, spinich, cabbage and kale.... ! There is no time to rest yet; we still have food to grow!  Seed us coming in hot and heavy, the hyacinth bean and lavender moonflower are especially abundent this year. Also morning glories of unbelievably rich colors this year, and white cyprus vine and marigold.  My marigolds look like BUSHES, not plants, this year....turns out i planted them over the septic tank! ha! So that old rumour is true......! you can see some of my pics from my garden and produce on my facebook page, if you are interested. Look up and "like" debbie's garden in Dallas, Georgia. http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/debbies-garden/70108898736  Everyone have a great day!  debbie

Greens!

Yesterday I picked my first collards of the season and they were delish!  I had some Kale to eat up, too, so I cooked them together.  The arugula is really starting to shoot up, too, and I can't wait to have some in a salad, hopefully next week.  Growing your own food can't be beat ! Saw some swiss chard make an appearance, and spinich and lettuce too.....grow babies grow, cause you don't have long in Georgia before you will want to bolt! I am going to try using row covers to help keep them shaded as long as possible and "drag out" the season....wish me luck! Anyone got any tips on this, let me know by commenting or emailing me!  deb

It's warming up!

It sure has warmed up the past few days, it's 81 degrees right now in Marietta Georgia !  I am loving the weather, and watching my arugula, collards and kale reach for the sky! Hope it doesn't stay 81 too long, though, i'd hate to have them go to seed before I can eat any! Ya'll have a wonderful weekend! I'll be digging up the yard getting ready for the plant sale and move! deb

We Needed It!

We sure needed the rain we are getting this weekend in Marietta! Making things poke up out of the ground further and green up! My small patch of kale, collards and arugula are looking good!  Fig tree has buds....and the blueberry bushes, too! Can't wait for some sunny weather so i can get back out there in the dirt....in the meantime, hand me that seed catalog again, I might have missed something! Ya'll have a great day!  deb

What do you have coming up??

Hello, all, I'm just curious what folks in other parts of the country (or even in my own city!) have coming up (if anything), either in the garden/field, greenhouse or on the window sill!  I have collards, kale, and arugula up, as well as Cilantro planted in the fall is shooting upward. I will be planting sugar snap peas this weekend, and who knows what else, maybe some lettuce?   I also have basil under the grow light in the house.  I reworked the strawberry bed, and also saw buds sitting tight on the blueberries. Not to mention all the many, many other things tentatively poking through the earth! Daffodils blooming the past few days, my favorite flower!  So glad to see a little warmer weather here. If you get a minute, comment and tell me what you've got planted, and where you are. Hope everyone has a great weekend!  deb :-)
