January's warmth is in the kitchen

It is sometimes difficult for a farmer to perpetuate the constant energy flow that happens during the growing season. January needs to hold a time for recharging, reading, getting life in order and reflection on new ideas.

But somehow, veggies still draw our attention as their senescence requires tending. There is no way those hard earned squash can rot or the chinese cabbage dry out. So, many hours are spent transforming foods into frozen, dried or fermented products to be enjoyed for many more months in their various forms and shared with others.

And then there is skiing!  Hopefully we will get more snow to moderate this cold. Finally the beginning of January provided a window for mulching garlic and parsnips, a fall chore that never happened.
