Lemon Ladies Orchard

I try to remember to be thankful everyday. I even have a special necklace that I put on each morning to remind me that today is a new day and to try to do my very best. It's important not take for granted all the blessings we have in our lives. And not just on Thanksgiving but everyday.

To love and be loved is one of life's greatest joys. That message arrived unexpectantly this week in the form of a very large box. When I opened it and finally cleared out the packing materials, I found a beautiful framed cross-stitching with birds and flowers, intricately woven through the words. This treasure had been created forty years ago by my husband's mother, Jiggs. I never met Jiggs. She died of breast cancer long before I fell in love with her son. But holding this piece, I could feel her talking to me across the years. My husband's Aunt Kay sent it to me and I am very grateful to her.

I am also grateful to all the wonderful people I have met through Local Harvest. Because of you, I find homes for my beautiful lemons and people who enjoy them as much as I do. Thank You. Today and everyday.

Waiting for the Lemons

Lemons take time

Hello everybody,

Did you know that it takes nine months to grow a lemon? From the tiny purple bud comes the glorious sun-colored lemon ready to harvest. Last year was our first harvest and our forty trees yielded over 6,000 pounds of sweet Meyer lemons. We are hoping for a similar yield this year. But you can't rush Mother Nature. Especially with Meyers. They only ripen on the tree unlike Eurekas which are often picked green. The first rains fell last week (in seven months) and did the Ladies appreciate that bit of bliss.

Though we don't have lemons just yet, we do have some wonderful Meyer Marmalade recently added to our offerings, a taste of pure California sunshine! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend this sweet treat.

I also put in some Santa Rosa Plum trees this summer. Yesterday, I made a divine batch of Plum jam for Christmas presents. Next year we will be adding both the fruit and jam to our offerings.

So for now, we wait. I tell the trees everyday how beautiful they are full of lemons of every size. And how many of our loyal customers are waiting for me to send them some! It won't be long now.
