Great Success Thanks to the Omaha Jaycees

We've so far had a great Spring.  The temperatures for us have been awesome.  Unfortunately the nights still have been a bit on the chilly side so some of the crops are just sitting there!  Things in the greenhouse are coming right along however.  We're going to have a great crop of salad greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, spinach and carrots from the greenhouse.  I'll be posting some pictures to the LocalHarvest web site as well as our own farm web site.

Our shareholder deliveries will begin the last weekend in May or the first weekend in June depending upon the maturity of crops and weather conditions.

The Omaha Jaycees have volunteered now two weekends this spring helping us to put in potatoes, popcorn, pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries and much more.  They tirelessly have helped with weeding, moving bags of peat and composted manure.  It has been a great relief to have their assistance.  They are donating both of their full shares to the Omaha Food Bank!

I must get on with planting more seedlings now.  I hope everyone reading this is doing well and in great spirits.  We look forward to our Shareholder Potluck at the end of next month!

Success!! Nebraska Crop Tops Sponsors the Cass County 4-H Whiz Kids

Nebraska Crop Tops and the Cass County 4-H Whiz Kids have been approved for an OPPD Tree Grant.  We applied just a couple of weeks ago and received our notice in the mail yesterday.  We have been invited to Lauritzen Gardens on 24 April to receive our grant money in an official ceremony.  Nebraska Crop Tops will cover the remainder of funds required to complete the landscape project.

Mr. Landscape in Plattsmouth is the nursery we received our quote from for the project.  They and the Whiz Kids will be planting three White Dogwoods and 3 Eastern Redbud trees this spring around the Weeping Water Lake and Campground.

The town completed a paved walking path along the river that runs through Weeping Water.  These trees will offer safe haven for beneficial insects and birds and add a splash of color every spring for those residents who enjoy walking through town.

We hope all of our Shareholders have an opportunity to spend a bit of time walking around the lake, fishing, and enjoying nature.

Mother Nature Amnesia

Has Mother Nature a slight case of amnesia?  We are ready for Spring already!!!  I am thankful we have a hoop house.  I was able to go out and till up a couple of beds in the hoop house.  We'll be setting transplants of lettuce and spinach out over the next few days.  I will also be planting a couple of raised beds of carrots soon.  Have 25 tomatoes ready for transplanting into the hoop house.  Soon we will also have cucumbers ready to transplant.

Yesterday we sold our last share of the 2009 Harvest Season!  We also received our 600 potato sets, 500 strawberry plants, our back ordered celery seed and cheddar cauliflower seed!  Next week we should get the 1944 Farmall H back from the machine shop--we're having a 6 to 12 volt conversion completed and an overall tune-up.  Now we just need the weather to be a bit more cooperative.

I bet many of you have Spring Fever like me.  Now's the time to get your seeds started indoors if you haven't already.

We hope to have several fun activities for shareholders and non-shareholders alike to participate in.  My plan is to post a blog entry every Saturday by 8:30pm.  If any of you have questions about planting your own vegetable gardens we welcome your emails and phone calls.  We are glad to share what we have learned.

Have a great rest of the weekend!
