My friend shared some "estimated virtual " statistics about the homes that are empty and the homeless in the USA.The latter was 3 million of "registered" homeless and the former of 13 million of "forclosed "empty homes!!The figures may be higher than you can imagine if a REAL ACTUAL statistics applies!
I stopped to contemplate and ask myself the question of, how many farms or agrarian lands stand empty or deserted while there are so many farmers or able bodied men and women who are registered as unemployed or homeless that can fill in the gap and jump start the economy just by working the land and PRODUCING food ???
Recently I met an investor who travelled all the way from overseas just to start an Urban Organic Farm on an empty lot of 4 acres .He is building the soil and the infrastucture and it will take him one year to start production.
How many farms were erased and destroyed along with their fertile soil that took hundreds and thousands of years to form just to be replaced by developers mansions or condos that now are sitting empty and vacant??
In this election year I did not hear any politician mention any promises to create more agricultural jobs or farms that could em[ploy more farmers.
Food prices are skyrocketing as a result of higher oil prices, draughts, floods etc..Politicians have money in the bank or banks who back them up and in exchange stimulus money keep the bank afloat to forclose more homes of the common working man and women..
The history of farming in US lends itself to outsourcing our resources to: Mega corporations ,speculators, foreigners ,slaves, migrant farmers etc..
The one missing link in the farming picture is the small local urban farmer who is marginalized, discouraged, depleted of resources, denied assistance , to say the least.
Farming our own food will jump start the economy as producing ,selling and buying locally grown produce will circulate our dollars within our border and not south or north or you name it where!!
Give the small farmers the land, funds, and help they need and expect more than crops growing. It is the ecconomy that will grow and we will have our bountiful farms ,homes full and less of homeless !

What is the state of the standard of living in the US right now.Simply 50% decline as per a recent study:
How about life in rural America and where the most of family farmers livelyhood is located ?
Educated farmers can enrich not just the farms but also the society where they farm.
Are we pursuing a strategy to create more farms and educate more farmers ?Are we concerned about raising the standard of living of farmers not just their COST of living or MAKING a LIVING?
This is the come back of the 1929 economy of DEPRESSION .Are we prepared to go and dig out the VICTORY GARDEN lessons of the Depression to learn how Americans survived ?
Farmers need answers ..they need acts to remedy the neglected STATE of FARMERS!
History repeats itself only if we are left in the darkness and did not take lessons and do something about raising our standard of living especially by riding the wave of GREEN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY and LIVING !

Here is another small farmer story and the dilemma of trying to make a buck milking a cow and selling locally grown food.
In this election year small farmers must come together to gather not just crops but also their votes and voices to adress the challenges and hardships of the trade and their solutions .
Not so many stories of farmers struggling surface at the " Main" Stream media.Local harvest farmers may find this interesting to learn a lesson from ..a " Maine " farmer.
Sharing UNUSUAL farmers stories other than the usual anecdotal literature of "he said she said and what is going on with the chicken and cows" is significant to farmers trying hard to make a living off the land but hardly succeeding and always struggling .

It is not a secret that farmers during the Great Depressiobn of 1929 were among the Big Losers financially. They lost their farms to the banks as they could not pay their mortgages. There was another reason :THE DRAUGHT.
History repeats itself unless we learn our lessons !
There were five main reasons according to a below study* why the GREAT DEPRESSION happened.
1-Stock Market Crash of 1929.2-Bank Failures.3-Government Economic Policy.4-Reduction in Purchase power.Draught.Learn more from history:
Lot of ordinary folks lost their 401K savings and retirement pensions due to the stock market repetetive speculations and mini-crashes since3 2001.The fall and rise of gold now is attracting the concentrated wealth of the few as a safe haven against a weak paper dollar that is not backed any more by the presious metal.People are spending less as they are making less.Jobs are outsourced to foreign countries like Chinaand India.Farms are relocating to Mexico as the illegal immigrant population is being deported and local farm unluvrative jobs do not attract citizens who are used to fringe benefits,insurance,401K etc..
Dare to question the TRUTH about the economy and you will face a probe like the S&P Standard and Poor 500 who downgraded the status of our economy to AA+ from AAA!
But in the Information age of the Internet the INFORMATION is already OUT THERE: Here are some samples of EYE OPENERS for family farmers :
It is good to know as they say, also:Knowledge is power!

Have you heard about what is happening in California to a Co-op that sells RAW MILK? Do you have a farm that produces raw milk or are you a consumer of RAW MILK?If the answer is YES, then you MUST read this:
The New York Tinmes today has an article about the same subject ..Kind of shocking to see the stock market sinking in the aftyermath of the debt default debate that opened the eyes on our FOURTEEN TRILLION of DEBT .Now the world and local financial markets are reacting and our dollar and stocks and homes and jobs will witness another double DIP..recession or shall we hope NOT a DOUBLE DEPRESSION!
Another shocking story from Orange county in California :Police beats a homeless to death !Check this out:
~ What is going on with the world.??!Blame it on the HEAT WAVE of the global warmin! Our heads are becoming super heated and we are beating the life out of the heck of you name it!

The Roman Empire did good things, excluding conquerring other countries and trading and using slaves , to remember like for example: Introducing canals systems for irrigation.
One other thing that most of us do not know was that the Roman Empire employed and enlisted FARMERS to go to wars. They had horses , and that was a prerequisit to join the military then, owning a horse!
So what is common now and then aboutThe Roman Empire and Farmers?
Simply speaking as many SMALL local farmers now struggle to make a living (may be you have heard that they do well, but in reality they DO NOT!):They are getting out of business and relinquishing their farms to the Big Agri or just abandoning it to the banks as they default on mortgages or fail to compete with the Mexicans or Chinese farming products .
I found a common an interesting denominator while watching a below video clip , may be you can find the same thing too:It is good to know that farmers of the Roman Empire were the soldiers as well , and much more,as this video clip shows:

I think this is not real what I saw _Click ABOVE LINK to watch it_on YOU TUBE .What do you think?
I think there is something not true about this thing.
Sorry for the unintended rhyme.I am skeptical unless someone calls WH , like they did with the last Georgia firing and rehiring of an African American Agriculture Georgia state director for something she said but ,actually later on when investigated , itturned out that she did not .
It was then EDITED and fabricated by a blogger and later broadcast by a biased news channel who just beleived his fabricated story for some reasons of its own..May be this TV coverage story too is fabricated ,since it is coming again from Georgia like the other story...
We , here in Florida are SOUTHERNERS too like Georgia our next neighbor and we have our goofs to joke about!,Like ,we are known nationally and INTERNATIONALLY,for the HANGING CHAD or the BUTTERFLY BALLOT and jokes were made about us .LOL!
May be in Georgia they have something else to laugh or make a joke about? Is the "THE CRIMiNAL GARDENING " thing from Georgia one of tghose DIRT jokes?
I really do not know??.
Please , take me serious.I am an Urban Farmer myself and people usually think we farmers are good hearted and sometimes they joke how NAIVE we are..God Bless them .They make me laugh about those farmers jokes!LOL!!!!Keep them coming...May be this coverage story is another JOKE...LOL!
I am just posting the link as I received it .May be someone will prove that I am right : this clip about criminal charges for growing tomato is not true?
Do they have similar laws in Georgia like the ones in California about Medicinal Maijuana? May be they thought it was Marijuana ,like the recent raid of a school garden in California by police who mistook Tomato for Marijuana???Well, mistakes happen .
If that be the case, which I think IS AN INNOCENT mistake. then we need to EDUCATE more people about gardening ,for example those who make a mistake like the one in California school garden ,should sign up and volunteer at a CSA or a community garden and do some community service to learn how the tomato look like and take a course of PLANT IDENTIFICATION.
Gardening education should be obligatory at schools and colleges so that people will have a better awareness about where the food comes from and how to grow your own food in case you lost a job or a home etc..and save on the FOOD STAMP tax payers money!
They say it is better to teach how to fish rather than to give some one a fish...Try that at the garden.
I am kind of confused what to beleive these days!

I really want to share with you some news as they were told to us, how an official who works for USDA and has a say on many of FARMERS LIVES gets FIRED one day then gets HIRED the next day because of how we PAINT THEIR PICTURE to the public ?It is said that "TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE"..How about half truths or deceptions? Will they set us on the path to SLAVERY ?
Here is how one video "short cut snap" was revealed to the American people and painted -or shall we say "TAINTED "?-an official who is a good government employee -( working while a woman and black) -resulting in her being FIRED?( or forced to resign, whichever applies to your mind) yesterday, then HIRED today BUT aftter the FULL STORY/VIDEO was told /released to the public.Yesterday was FIRED,I qoute:"
Then she was offered a REHIRE as per the acj blogger, below mentioned , thay reported the story in a different WAY, the least to say-I qoute ajc:
In the curious case of Shirley Sherrod, let’s see the whole tape
A couple of folks in comments yesterday brought up the case of USDA official Shirley Sherrod, a black woman caught on tape at an NAACP meeting here in Georgia apparently bragging about being less than diligent in helping a white farmer. The folks at Big Government posted a portion of her speech as part of the running feud between the NAACP and the Tea Party over which organization is more racist.
By the end of the day Monday, Sherrod had been forced to resign her post, and NAACP President Ben Jealous had released a statement agreeing with the forced resignation:
“Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.
We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.
Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.”
(UPDATE: The NAACP has now pulled that statement from its website.)
After watching the video Monday evening, I wrote in comments that “what Sherrod says in that video — and what she apparently did — are deeply troubling… She might very well have earned a firing. But I’d like to see that rest of that video as well, because at the point it abruptly ends, she appears to be saying that it’s wrong to think in terms of black and white, that she came to see things as more accurately divided between poor and rich than by race.”
As I also noted, the folks at Big Government seem to have the whole video, since they also posted another segment, and it would be useful to see the rest of it. "
Today :She is offered to be REHIRED.I qoute ajc blogger for quick reference:"
Obama administration apologizes, offers to rehire Sherrod
In his just-concluded press conference, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has publicly apologized to Shirley Sherrod for acting much too hastily, and without full possession of the facts. He seems to have taken his mistakes to heart, and his regret seems sincere.
The department has also offered to rehire Sherrod, an offer that she is reportedly considering.
I think it’s fair to say that Vilsack and the administration overreacted, out of fear and ignorance, and were “snookered” by Andrew Breitbart and others, as the NAACP put it. The secretary has now apologized, as has the NAACP. The actual perpetrators of the fraud have not followed suit, and almost certainly will never do so.
Sherrod gets a chance to tell her side of the story in an AJC story by Marcus Garner:
“But Tuesday morning, Sherrod said what online viewers weren’t told in reports posted throughout the day Monday was that the tale she told at the banquet happened 24 years ago — before she got the USDA job — when she worked with the Georgia field office for the Federation of Southern Cooperative/Land Assistance Fund.
Sherrod said the short video clip excluded the breadth of the story about how she eventually worked with the man over a two-year period to help ward off foreclosure of his farm, and how she eventually became friends with the farmer and his wife.
“And I went on to work with many more white farmers,” she said. “The story helped me realize that race is not the issue, it’s about the people who have and the people who don’t. When I speak to groups, I try to speak about getting beyond the issue of race.”
So let’s see the rest of the tape, Big Government. Was Sherrod giggling among black folk about the time she put it to the white man, as the leaked excerpt suggests, or was the tape a deceptively edited excerpt of a longer story about getting beyond the issue of race, as she claims?
Let’s see the tape. The evidence apparently exists to settle the question. Cough it up." Unqoute.
Telling the truth is always the way for FREEDOM , half truths or deceptions are the way for SLAVERY.Do not underestimate the power of a blogger..in this case an "ajc" blogg! To focuss or not to focuss is the question!

This memorial day let us be kind to the living as well.I am writing this article from the office next to a rammage sale of three community churchesthat have a Hunger project and another act of charity to feed the homeless through a food pantry that draws donations from neighbors and the community by just knocking on doors and asking for donations to a food drive .
Today the traffic at the rummage sale was slow. There is a truck that is full of clothes , it is being offered for free because customers did not show up in numbers and the clothes need to be recycled to humans and not to the trash bins.
Yes, the trash bins get a lot of our excess.I am going to give a class next week in collaboration with a city official about composting.Awareness helps as well.So spread the good news and be part ofit ratgher than condemning darkness:Light a candle!
How many of us recycle our food scrapings from the kitchen? How many of us share thier leftovers with a hungry soul?
Compassion is ssomething we humans grow in our heart and harvest as a spiritual and emotional fulfilment that brings us joy and comfort .
Acts of kindness will remind us that we are mortals and need to help each others and recycle LOVE in acts of kindness even to strangers.
I feel good today becasue I donated few bucks to the teens who were were selling water to raise funds for their summer camp.I felt good because I shared the joy and the smile with those school kids who were working for collecting funds for a youth program that will keep them active in a positive way.You can do it as well.
Happy memorial day.

Have you ever asked yourself this question: Why container gardening is easier to handle than the yard gardening?
Well, here are some benefits listings to encourage you to start an organic garden in containers if you live in a studio, efficiency, apartment without any access to a front or back yard.
Here in South Florida we are in the 9-10 agricultural zone.Keep this in mind because what defines which plants to grow and which not to is relevant to the zone category which is governed by climatic temperature in general.
I have noticed that the following reasons from my own experience suffice to consider container gardening especially for a new comer to S.Florida or a new gardener .Here are some observations to take note of Organic Container Gardening:
1-It is cheaper and SAVES you money, energy, water conservation, and time.
2-It is SIMPLE and requires no special expensive big garden tools and accessories.Small inexpensive tools will be enough.
3-It is INSTANT and requires not much efforts or resources to start and maintain.
4-It is more accessible to the elderly, children and people with disabilities.
5-It is more PRONE to manage, move during inclement weather or the hurricane season.
6-It is EASY to maintain ,with less weeding for example .
7-It is FUN.You may like to decorate the containers with drawings or painting etc..and place at locations that you find more convenient .
8-It is PRODUCTIVE if you choose to grow fruits, veggies and herbs.
9-It is easy to SALVAGE if you choose to relocate or otherwisewas obliged get evicted.
10-It is more FLEXIBLE to locate either indoors or outdoors.

There is a BLIND SIDE for CHRISTMASS.Check it out at the faces of those who are:
4-NEEDY and Lonely!
5-Lost their home-car-land to the BANKS and MORTGAGE MOGALS(NEW VERSION OF MONEY LENDERS)!
6-Separated from loved ones because they could not afford to buy an airplane ticket this holliday season!
Their is also a BRIGHT SIDE of Christmass.Check it out at:
The hearts and souls of COURAGEOUS AMERICANS who give willingly from their OWN :Shelter ,food, clothes, jobs and comfort -to all of the ABOVE!
It is so DIRE here in South Florda.Next door lives the ULTRA RICH in PALM BEACH ISLAND.On the other side those WHO DO NOT HAVE are multiplying every day!
Most of the churches who operate programs to help the needy have shortages of EVERYTHING.Their phones ring and machines answer!I visited so many and I can tell you that there is so much LACK !Most of all there is IGNORANCE,RACIAL and CULTURAL bias.Threre are plenty of BREAD which is LOADED with yeast that makes you fat and sick .BUT NOT ENOUGH or NOT AT ALL of ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES-Here is what one official at a charity told me today when I asked her about the shortage:We have tomatoes to be picked for free , but we here have no time to go and pick the FREE vegies.I offered to do just that .She ignored me.They do not want unconditional help but rather they make their own conditions(ignorance) and RED TAPE to block HELP !
Most of the churches are DOING GREAT JOB and even outscoring some welfare programs ..They have land that could be converted to COMMUNITY gardens that produces organic vegies for the NEEDY but they take no action to activate them!
SOME of their volunteers are locked in RED TAPE and Racial BIAS.For example:Most of the people who DO NOT HAVE and are seeking help are with some TAN color. On the other side Most of the volunteers who are offering helping hands are of the opposite UNTANNED color. They do not UNDERSTAND the struggles and the language sometimes become a barrier.
There is LACK OF COMMUNICATION on the other side of CHRISTMASS.
If you need more illustrations. PLEASE:Check out the movie playing in theatres near you:THE BLIND SIDE !
There are plenty of FAVORITISM and of those who try to scope and skim the good goodies for themselves and be selective in their charity. The spirit of the HOLIDAYS is lost and needs to be FOUND NOT IN THE MATERIAL CELEBRATION and SHOPPING SPREES.Rather the SPIRIT of the season lies within our HEARTS and SOULS that need to be AWAKENED!

THERE are ways to do business and ways to live as much as of high ways and routes to TRAVEL.Diversity is the KEY word if you want to LEARN HOW TO START AN ORGANIC GARDEN.Start SMALL and LEARN BIG!
Unfortunately for the working people who want to be a week end garden warrior it is not enough .I have found out that Communication,Culture,Community and COGNITION ,play an important role of WHO WE ARE and HOW WE FUNCTION.BINGO!So , you want to START GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD because the OBAMAS have done so or because it is the new WAVE!??Here are the GOOD and BAD news:
GOOD NEWS: You need an able body(YOUR OWN) to use other than the migrant farmer's who is now to BLAME for the DEPRESSION which is making you LOSE your HOME-CAR-BUSINESS to the BAILED OUR INSURANCE -MORTGAGE-BANKS ,BIG BUSINESS TRIO!
BAD NEWS: You need to start the LEARNING PROCESS FIRST before you to START DIGGING YOUR OWN GARDEN.Unfortunately the books - DVD -Information Technology and what have you ,fall short of a Shovel or RAKE!..Using the SOFTWARE is not SUFFICIENT .YOU NEED HARD WARE!TOOLS and ABLE BODY! When was the last time you moved your body other than swirching a TV channel at a GYM?Our muscles need to be trained to use basic gardening tools like a rake or shovel so that we do not end up with back injuries etc..They call it ERGONOMICS...THIS IS BASICS prior to digging. No Horticultural school I know of teach ERGONOMICS to agriculture students. Most of FARMERS and GARDENERS I know of HAVE BAD BACKS.Be AWARE! HAVE AWARENESS!LEARN ERGONOMICS FIRST.
GOOD NEWS: There are classes and workshops fascilitated by farmers on PRACTICAL GARDENING according to THE GEOGRAPHICAL ZONE..I do have ones ready to order or attend . HERE IN S.FLORIDA , you need to learn about what and when to grow at the TROPICAL-9-10 ZONE.Reading a gardening book or going to college is overdoing it..You need to look for simple way..and hook up with a PROFESSIONAL FARMER / GARDENER near you! VOILA!Instead of using your plastic at a mega garden center and buy it all ready made...WHY NOT MAKE and GROW YOUR OWN: COMPOST-SEEDLINGS ..FROM A TO Z.
The gardening way is SLOW and it is a PROCESS! Meaning : IT TAKES TIME and it follows the GROWING SEASON from start to end...HERE it is less than six months from November to March.So...Why are you waiting? You can start NOW by just LEARNING THE PROCESS and GETTING THE ORGANIC GARDENING AWARENESS!BEST WAY TO DO IT IS :HANDS ON..and on the GARDEN GROUNDS! !MICRO-Urban farming is different than MEGA farming! You need to start small.A container will do..But you need the EDUCATION LIVE and HANDS ON APRIORI!
My experience with new comers to ORGANIC GARDENING: They come from out of state zones, ask for handouts, want the GARDEN NOW.They are overwhelmed with the notes and know-how.They need time to digest the information,.They need budget to start the garden. They need help in setting up the process. Here are the topics that you need to learn about: Compost.Mulch.Organic Brown and Green Manure.Soil PH.Irrigation.Seeds.Seedlings.Organic fertilizers.Organic pesticides. What grows and what does not in your area and season.
IT IS GOOD TO KNOW FIRST , BEFORE YOU GROW!
