Not winter yet?

It's December 17th - four days till winter's official start and it's freezing in Seabeck today - all week for that matter.  Snow covers the ground and ice coats the roads.  We're expecting more snow tonight and into tomorrow.  First order of business was to make sure all the animals were safe and warm.  The dog on his sleeping bag in our bedroom.  The cats on the dog bed in the garage.  The goats in their pen/shelter, with a fresh bed of straw.  And last, but not least, the chickens, in their coop with heat lamp and Christmas music.  What?  You don't play holiday music for your chickens?

Okay, I guess it's a little strange.  But what of it?  They don't mind it and we like thinking a little bit of culture makes them happier!  Who doesn't love Christmas?

So we're all bundled against the cold, human and animal alike, and we're waiting for Santa.  Merry Christmas!

I Love Lucy

I just watched the 'I Love Lucy' esisode where they raised chickens.  It's so funny because I see myself in so much of the fun they had!  Those cute little fuzzballs, crammed in their little shipping box.  The sweet sound they made.  Although unlike the Ricardo's, we didn't trade those lil' tweeters for grown hens.  We raised them ourselves from box to grown chickens.  I sympathized with Lucy's concern when their chickens weren't laying eggs the way Fred said they would (1 per day per hen).  If we've learned anything, it's that animals don't read the same books we humans do and they don't care one whit about our schedules and grand plans!

Gotta go now and check our own hens!

Hello!

We're so excited to be on LocalHarvest.  This is our first season with the girls (chickens) and so far it's been a wonderful experience.  We've met lots of great people online and in person thanks to the website.  And since our egg production is getting up and running on a consistent basis - we've started selling - already we have customers enjoying our fresh eggs.

With winter pressing down on Seabeck, we're concentrating on expanding the chicken yard and siding the 10X14 coop so the girls are warm and as dry as possible in this cold, wet weather.

Will keep this site updated as to our progress.  Check back for updates!
