Help Your Poultry Beat the Summer Heat

Help your poultry beat the hot summer heat by giving them fresh, cool water everyday.  If you notice your chickens, ducks, or turkeys are panting and holding their wings out, they need some help to get cool.
Here are some suggestions:

Once a week, put an electrolyte/vitamin solution in their water. This will help to encourage water consumption as well as replace needed vitamins and minerals that can be lost in the heat.  These solutions are available at your local feed store.

Give your poultry a treat of watermelon, canteloupe, or honeydew melon. Don't overdo it though, as too much could cause runny droppings.

Keep the coop clean. Chickens like to take dust baths to keep the bugs at bay and to help cool themselves.  Bathing in a bunch of poop is no fun! Make sure they have fresh bedding or a clean dirt floor to bathe in.
