It looks like Mother Nature will be shining down on us this Saturday! :) Perfect weather for a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
Our farmers have been struggling with the cold temperatures, so many of the usual spring offerings are going to be a bit late this year. That's the price you pay to have a 100% homegrown/produced market. Take my word for it...they want to be at the market as much as our customers want to see them. Each week we are seeing more and this Saturday you'll even find a new to the market veggie. The folks at McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing some Komatsuna, a form of Japanese mustard greens. Curiosity got the best of me and I did some research for recipes...it sounds wonderful and very versatile so check it out. This would be a perfect time to try something new and exciting while you wait for the “normal” spring greens to arrive...who knows, you might find a new favorite!
Here's just a bit of what you'll find on Saturday and please remember that we are growing each week as Mother Nature allows!
Stone Burr Farm will be bringing their delicious lamb!!
My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their local brew beer soap and local goat's milk soap!
Roger Postley of Tomatoes, Etc will have some Purple Ruffle Basil plants and maybe some other herb plants like Chives, Cutting Celery (a must have for any herb garden) and Parsley. If you are looking for an unusual plant...try the Egyptian Walking Onion sets that he'll be bringing too! Roger will also be taking orders for his heirloom pepper and tomato plants!
Herb'n Renewal will be loaded down with their hand blended herb seasoning, handcrafted glycerin soaps, catnip for the kitties and lavender sachets. Don't forget the Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies! And, make sure you stop by and get a treat for your four-legged friend.
Cripple Creek Farm, new to our market this year, will be bringing jams, jellies, homemade strawberry and cherry pie fillings, gluten and grain free breads, garlic and herb breadsticks, Amish white, sourdough, banana nut and zucchini breads too! They sold out of their spring asparagus quickly last week but they have promised to bring more! And maybe even some lettuce!
McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing hot pepper, spiced tomato, hot spiced tomato jams, Concord grape and Niagara grape jelly. Dried tomatoes and okra. The wonderful dried bean soup mix is back! And for that sweet tooth, look for chocolate zucchini cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin pecan cookies! As mentioned, the Komatsuna, Mizuna, Red Russian kale. We'll also have a limited supply of green onions and arugula!
Kelly's Kobe Beef, another new farmer this year, will be bringing their farm fresh eggs, Kobe beef and all sorts of pork cuts!
On Tapp Dairy will have plenty of pork, beef, chicken and veal cuts! And, farm fresh eggs too!
And, who knows what other surprises you might find! :)
Make sure you stop by and welcome our new members...they'd love to meet you. :)
We have a big favor to ask each and every one of our FaceBook followers...could you please share with your friends. Each “share” will get the word out a bit more...the more folks that know about the Bluegrass Farmers' Market the better. It will help us grow and be able to offer more to you, our valued customers. :)
And, speaking of our Facebook page...we'd love to have you as a friend! :)
