Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

And, we are talking green beans! Which, by the way do not really have to be green in color...try the yellow or purple beans too. I do have to admit that the first time I prepared the purple beans, I was a bit disappointed to find that they do not stay purple. The great part is they are still loaded with flavor!

I have to admit that folks are adamant about their choice of green bean varieties. I love Jade beans because I am sauteing queen when it comes to veggies...I love them crisp tender. Now, my hubby is a true southerner...he wants a big old ham hock and taters in his green beans and he wants them simmered for hours but only after I have spent an hour getting the strings out and snapping them. It doesn't matter which you prefer, green beans are in season and there is a variety for everyone, just talk to your farmer for suggestions. At the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, we can guarantee that the farmer grew those green beans!!!

Here are a few recipes that customers gave me for everyone to try.

Beans Onions'n Maters

2 lb green beans, snapped (or left whole) and cooked until tender...you can steam some varieties!

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder...or use fresh minced garlic!

2 medium tomatoes, peeled and diced

salt and pepper to taste

Once beans have been cooked, drain and set aside. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and saute' onions until translucent. Add garlic and tomatoes...heat through. Add green beans and toss, cooking until just heated. Salt and Pepper to taste.

BBB

Basil, Butter and Beans

4 cups fresh green beans, snapped into 2” pieces

1/4 cup onion, chopped

1/4 cup celery, chopped

1/2 cup water

2 tablespoons butter, melted

2 tablespoons fresh basil, minced

Salt and pepper to taste

Simmer green beans, onion, celery and water in a covered skillet for about 5 minutes or until beans are tender. Once tender, drain and return to the skillet along with the butter, basil, salt and pepper...toss to coat and heat through.

And, I couldn't help but share this recipe that I found because it sounds soooooo wonderful! Yes, I am drooling and can't wait to get to the market on Saturday and buy some beans, basil and taters to try this one!!!

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I was walking through the Richmond Rd. market last week and I had to smile to myself. I kept thinking about the years when I shopped at a grocery store and purchased onions, potatoes, squash, etc. I had no idea what variety they were and I'll almost guarantee that the produce clerks didn't either...heck, it was a red or white potato! A red, purple, yellow or white onion! And, squash was yellow or green! Boy, am I glad that my farmer friends have educated me to the point where I actually know what potatoes are good for frying, which ones I should mash and I also know that only certain squash work great for grilling. That's the great part of a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...the farmers actually grew what they are selling and they know about their products...just ask them for advice when trying something new.

Still thinking about varieties, here's a bit of what you'll find at the Richmond Rd. location on Saturday...

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Happenings!

September is one of my favorite months of the year. Most of the warm summer crops are still available at the farmers market and some of the cooler fall crops are starting to make an appearance. It just doesn't get any better than that!

We can all still enjoy ripe tomatoes, freshly picked corn, wonderful green beans, tantalizing hot and sweet peppers, newly harvested potatoes, fresh cut rhubarb and sweet treats like watermelons, cantaloupes and raspberries!

And, we're just starting to see some of the cooler weather crops like kale, onions, garlic and shallots!

~*~ All 100% homegrown on our farms! ~*~

Don't forget about the beautiful and colorful flowers that will bring a smile to anyones face! Or, the herb seasoning that can make a chef out of anyone! How about some of those wonderful jams and jellies! And, the great beer cheese! Tender and flavorful ASH Free beef! Farm fresh eggs and Amish cheese that can't be beat! Home baked goods that will make you drool! Handmade soaps are a luxury only they are not luxury priced!

~*~ All 100% raised, grown or produced by our farmers! ~*~

September also has a day that we, as Americans, need to remember. September 11th! Please take a moment out of your busy schedule to remember those that lost their lives on 9/11 and to thank our service men and women for continuing to keep us safe.

Happy Labor Day!

It might be a holiday but our farmers are busy working today so that they can bring the freshest and the best to the Tuesday market. Hopefully they will take some time off today and enjoy a traditional Labor Day cookout with their family and friends. I know we will be grilling some wonderful veggies that I bought on Saturday to go along with the great steaks that I also purchased. I love the way our farmers support each other!

This week you'll be able to find juicy tomatoes...even heirloom ones! There will be heirloom peppers too! In fact, there will be peppers in all sizes and shapes, hot or sweet, big and little! The potato varieties are numerous with “spuds” that make wonderful salads, some that are great for baking, others that are wonderful boiled and mashed. Don't forget that taters are great on the grill too! There's still plenty of raspberries, rhubarb and watermelons available. Oh, and don't forget the beautiful green beans...they went fast on Saturday! So did the colorful flowers and fresh cut herbs. I think they probably will end up as centerpieces on more than one picnic table today! And, how could I forget the wonderful jams, jellies and butters!!! Talk about big flavor in a jar! If your sweet tooth gets the best of you, try a delicious jam cake.

Yup, homegrown goodness galore at our Tuesday and Thursday market! I'll be updating again on Thursday so you all will know what we'll have at our bigger Saturday market, so stay tuned!

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Goodness!

It's Monday morning and here I sit trying to think of the best way to let folks know what wonderful items are available this week at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. I don't want to just post a list because that seems so boring. It finally came to me...how about I tell you about the wonderful bounty that we had this weekend at our home! The great part is, all of the goodies are still at the market. :)

Our weekend of market freshness started out on Saturday when I returned from a day of selling at the market. We unloaded our bounty and quickly decided that grilled veggies and a burger would be dinner! The ASH Free burgers were wonderful rubbed with some Herb'n Cowboy seasoning and topped with some Amish Colby cheese. The carrots, potatoes and peppers got washed and rubbed with a bit of bacon dripp'ins and a bit more herb seasoning and grilled right along with the burgers. We added some fabulous sliced tomatoes and a skillet full of the very best bi-color fried corn you've ever tasted. Tell me we didn't eat good on Saturday night and 99.9% of it came from the market!!! Fresh, homegrown and for sure delicious!

How the heck do you top that meal on Sunday? I'm not sure we topped it but we darn sure enjoyed it with all of the gusto of the previous evening. The day started out with more potatoes only this time we fried them in a skillet with some green peppers. Add some great farm fresh eggs and scramble it all together and top with a bit of Amish Parmesan cheese. It was heaven! I know we are supposed to be working and not thinking about “what's for dinner” but somehow the thought of more market goodies took over and we rested and pondered what our evening meal would be! Shame on us, but I have to admit that we were both pooped from a long week.

Our Sunday dinner bell rang and we sat down to yet another market bounty meal! I think you would call this meal a “farmers market special!” We had green beans, corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers with dill seasoning and fresh raspberries for dessert. It just doesn't get any better than that!

Yes, my friends, eat'in is good when it's homegrown and fresh from the market! The great thing is you'll be able to find all the freshness that you want at our Tuesday and Thursday markets. Come by and say hi to the farmers at Lexington's only 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. You can find us at 3450 Richmond Rd. in the tree lined, customer friendly, plenty of free and convenient parking lot of Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs right next to the Glenn Auto Mall. We'll be there on Tuesday from 3 until 6:30. And, on Thursday you can find us at the Fayette County Health Department on Newtown Pike from 4 until 6! Don't forget to mark your calendar for Saturday's market from 9 until 2 at the Richmond Rd. location.

Our farmers thank you for your continued support of our family farms...we grow for you!

Bluegrass Farmers' Market "Taters" 101!

I grew up thinking a potato was a potato...something you mashed and served with gravy. Or, you fried them to have with your eggs for breakfast. An extra special treat was a trip to a fast food for the occasional burger and “fries!” My mom used to boil small potatoes whole and season with butter and parsley. But, to me they were all just potatoes. In other words, a “tater is a tater!”

Well, have I ever learned different since I have been around real farmers vs. a grocery store to purchase my potatoes!!!

Did you know that a potato isn't just the starch and calorie builder that we all thought it was? They contain protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C, niacin, folate and fiber! Who knew they could be so healthy! We all need potatoes in our diet and the varieties are numerous!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market members have done their homework when it comes to potatoes. No more boring, plain taters for me! We get to choose from a great variety of heirloom and commonly known “spuds!” Here's just a few of the varieties available at our market this week...

Irish Cobbler

Katadin

Red Lasota

Red Norland

Russet Burbank

Kennebec

Yukon Gold

Wisconsin Superior

Red Pontiac

King Henry

Yellow Finn

A bit more potato info...new potatoes are moist and waxy and are best for steaming, boiling and in salads. Oblong mature white potatoes are dry and starchy and best used for baking, mashed or “fries!” The round red taters have a sort of waxy texture and that makes them great for boiling or mashing. Usually round white potatoes are thin-skinned and they hold their shape well in salads....but they are great for boiling and roasting too! Yellow-fleshed ones are good for steaming, roasting and mashing. But I have to admit that they all taste great with gravy!!! If you are looking for a specific way to prepare potatoes, don't be afraid to ask the farmer...they grew them and they know the best ways to cook them!

Geez, looks like I went on a “tater” rant today but believe me that's not all that you'll find at our markets this week. Look for the homegrown treats available during a Kentucky summer month...tomatoes, corn, squash, peppers, melons, green beans, flowers, herbs, eggplant and so much more!

Market Hours at our Richmond Rd. location in the parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet, next to the Glenn Auto Mall are...

Saturday 9 – 2

Thursday market hours at the Fayette County Health Department on Newtown Pike are...

Corn, Maters'n Beans!

It just doesn't get any better than that! Unless you add the wonderful squash, peppers, taters and cucumbers too! Heck, throw in some onions, garlic and even some broccoli! Of course you can't forget the wonderful blackberries, raspberries and rhubarb!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is full of the Kentucky summer bounty!

And don't let anyone kid you, we grow it all ourselves! No reselling allowed at our market so you know you're getting nothing but homegrown goodness from our farmers. Remember that we know what we grow and it isn't your average grocery store varieties. Look for heirloom tomatoes such as German Stripey. Or fabulous squash such as Magda, Cousa or Patty Pan. Peppers...hot and mild! Potatoes, round, long, red, white and even fingerling! Of course, everyone is talking corn right now and we've got a crowd favorite, Silver Queen along with Ambrosia and bi-color! What about some wonderful green beans...Romas, Tenderettes, Pole, Kentucky Wonders and a few heirloom varieties too!

Yup, summer crops are in full swing at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

But, that's not all that you'll find. We have farm fresh eggs, Amish cheese, ASH Free beef, honey, herb seasoning, jams, jellies and fruit butters, the very best baked goods and even homemade soaps! Now, granted, our farmers didn't “grow” these but they darn sure either raised or made them!

Who could forget the beautiful cut flowers and gorgeous baskets loaded with colorful flowers! Or maybe even a fragrant herb plant...we've got those too!

As you can tell, the members of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market take great pride in what they do. That's why one of the stipulations to becoming a member is that each individual farmer is certified Kentucky Proud! We don't just register the whole market...we make sure each of our farmers really grow or produce what they take pride in offering to the market!

We are Lexington's only 100% homegrown or produced farmers market!!!

Weekday Market Doings!

I was sitting here this morning trying to think of a way to let folks know just how wonderful the Bluegrass Farmers' Market really is and I decided that I'd probably just tell you what went home with me at the end of Saturday's market. I can tell you, it was quite a haul of fresh veggies and berries!

We enjoyed the most delicious fresh corn on the cob last night along with our wonderful ASH free beef burgers that were topped with fabulous tomatoes! Our plates looked more like serving platters by the time we added the crisp sliced cucumber and onion salad along with the extra heirloom tomatoes that we just had to try. By the way, the German Stripey's and Japanese something...sorry, I cannot remember the name of them...tomatoes were great! Heck, I'm not done yet. My hubby roasted some fingerling potatoes on the grill and Oh My Gosh, we're they ever good! He rubbed them with a bit of bacon drippings and then sprinkled them with coarse sea salt. Talk about heaven! You'd have thought that we would have been stuffed by the end of the meal but we managed to save room for a slice of fantastic jam cake that was drizzled with a decadent raspberry sauce that I made with those wonderful berries and local honey! I have to admit that the two of us could hardly move after dinner but, the funny part was, we were both thinking about the next meal! Lol Yup, there's still some wonderful greens beans, eggplant, zucchini and squash waiting for our next meal.

Geez, forgot to let you know that we started the day out with a huge breakfast of farm fresh eggs, fried taters, sliced tomatoes and homebaked bread loaded with homemade jam! Makes me wonder how we even managed to do anything yesterday. But we did get a bunch of green peppers chopped and frozen for use in chili this winter. We even froze some wonderful hot peppers so hubby could spice his up a bit more!

About the only thing I didn't come home with were flowers and plants. Believe me it wasn't because they weren't beautiful...it was because I didn't have anymore room in the van! I promised myself that I would save some space next week.

I have to tell you that it really makes you feel great to know that you can prepare and enjoy meals using nothing but locally grown goodies! And, the fresh flavor can't be beat. I'm already thinking about my farmers market list for this week!

Come join us at Lexington's only 100% homegrown or produced farmers market. You'll be greeted by hardworking farmers who can still manage to smile after harvesting that day and you'll leave with a bounty of fresh, homegrown goodness! It don't get no better than that!!!

This week at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's National Farmers Market Week and it's wonderful that our government recognizes the important role that farmers play in our daily living. But, we celebrate our farmers market every time we pull our trucks into place, set up our tents and unload the bounty from our farms! It's what we do and it's what we love doing because we know that our customers deserve and love the freshest available! So, we thank you for making National Farmers Market Week a daily event for us.

Doing what we love sometimes has its disadvantages, like at the Tuesday market this week. Our farmers got caught in the torrential downpour that hit Lexington! Lucky for them that we set up in a parking lot that has businesses and a church that saw their dilemma and invited them in until the rain stopped. We thank them for thinking of us all of the time but especially on Tuesday!

Now that they have dried out and returned to the fields to harvest, here's a bit of what you will find at the market this week...

CORN

TOMATOES

GREENBEANS

PEPPERS

SQUASH

ZUCCHINI

CUCUMBERS

POTATOES

GREENS

OKRA

ONIONS

GARLIC

BLACKBERRIES

FRESH CUT HERBS

And, goodies that we prepare when we aren't out in the fields like...

HOMEBAKED BREAD and CAKES

JAMS and JELLIES

HOMEMADE SOAP

Plus, you'll find...

GORGEOUS CUT FLOWERS

BEAUTIFUL HANGING BASKETS

HERB PLANTS

POTTED PLANTS

And who could pass up the wonderful...

AMISH CHEESE

FARM FRESH EGGS

ASH FREE BEEF

All 100% homegrown or produced by our farmers!!!

We're the only market in the area that can guarantee this!!!

So, take the short drive out Richmond Rd. to visit us this Saturday at 3450 Richmond Rd. in the Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs tree lined parking lot. I love farmers!

And, not just because they grow the most wonderful fruits and veggies...but because they are also some of the kindest folks that I know!

About an hour before closing time at the Saturday market, we noticed a vehicle across the street from the market. The hood was up and a man and a woman were trying to get their car up and running again. We saw the fellow cross the 6 lanes of road and walk over to the auto supply store nearby. The lady stayed with the car. We then saw him walk back empty handed and she just shook her head. They crossed the road again and stopped by our market to ask if any of us knew of another auto supply store in the area. Well, farmers are resourceful at all times and of course one of them had a phone book handy! After a few phone calls, using a farmers cell phone, we discovered a place that had the part that they needed. Only problem was it wasn't within walking distance! Never fear, a farmer came to the rescue and drove them to pick up the part even though the farmer was pooped from a long day of early harvesting and selling all day. The car was repaired and the couple headed off to visit a sick relative in the hospital. Yes, farmers grow great things but they are also wonderful human beings!!! I'm so proud of my fellow farmers for jumping in and helping this stranded couple. Just had to pass that little story on to all of you because it's what our market is all about...people and how we can make their life a bit brighter!

Okay, time to let you know what wonderful goodies our great farmers will be bringing to the Tuesday market. :) Look for tomatoes, green beans, corn, onion, potatoes, peppers, okra, squash, cabbage, blackberries, fresh cut herbs, flowers, jams and jellies plus so much more. Remember that these are not your ordinary grocery store varieties...we're talk'in top of the line goodness here!

Mark your calendar!!!! This Saturday, July 25th is going to be a special day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! It's our Customer Appreciation Day and we'll be celebrating all day long. “GrillMan Drew” from Caros restaurant will be on hand to whip up a wonderful veggie dish that everyone can sample! Everyone will get the chance to possibly win some “market bucks” that you can spend on some homegrown goodness! Individual farmers will be giving you the chance to win all sorts of good things. And, we'll even have special treats for your four-legged pals! Even the kiddos will get to join in on the fun with special surprises! It's sure to be a fun day for all, so remember Saturday, July 25th at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

We'd like to thank everyone who has voted for our market and hope that if you haven't done so yet...you will! We know we're a bit smaller but we can guarantee that whatever you purchase from our members was grown, baked, made or produced on their Kentucky Proud farm! We're real farmers who work hard to bring you only the best and the freshest homegrown goodness available in the area! Saturday Means Homegrown at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Okay, I am so excited about what our farmers will be bringing to the market this Saturday! It's kind of like an Oh My Gosh moment!!! We have been enjoying the bounty so far but it's always exciting to know that tomatoes, corn, peppers and green beans are finally in season in Kentucky and our 100% homegrown farmers will be bringing them to the market this week! Can I holler out a YIPPEE!!!

I know that I have been drooling for the taste of some real local goodies and I sure had my wish fulfilled last week. We enjoyed the bestest (not sure if that is a word but it fits) most unbelievable squash and cucumbers. The sweet corn was magnificent fried, the tomatoes sliced were to die for and the steamed potatoes tasted like heaven! Can you tell we like to eat fresh and local? :)

Oh, my...I almost forgot the scrumptious blackberries that we had for dessert! Here I go, drooling again just telling you about the wonderful items available at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. I know it seems like you've had to wait for the homegrown goodness but it's worth it to know that you are purchasing “real” local food! We don't allow any items to be trucked in...our farmers have to grow or produce what they sell at our market. We do that because that's what we think a farmers market is all about...farmers and family farms! We thank you all so much for understanding why we didn't have corn in May or tomatoes in April and we hope that you enjoyed what was in season like the lettuce, onions, potatoes and strawberries. We only sell what is in season in our beautiful Bluegrass state!

Here I am going off again and getting excited without telling you what other wonderful things you'll be able to find. Sorry, but I can't help myself! Here's a list of some of the goodies that will be available this week...

Corn

Tomatoes

Green beans

Cucumbers

Potatoes

Onions

Garlic

Peppers

Squash

Greens

Blackberries

And, don't think that any of these are your average grocery store varieties...our farmers spend many hours researching what will in grow our Kentucky climate and soil and bring only the best to our market. You'll find specialty varieties along with good old fashioned favorites! And, if you have any questions, feel free to ask the farmer that grew that item...they really know about it because they sowed, hoed and harvested their own crop!

Many of us also spend time in our kitchens whipping up great jams, jellies, breads and cakes too! We'll even have herb seasoning, eggs, cheese and homemade soaps!!! Some of us love being able to grow and harvest fresh flowers like zinnias and sunflowers and others love creating beautiful hanging herb and floral baskets. We're a diverse bunch of farmers but we are darn sure proud of what we bring to the market market each week because we know that you will appreciate our efforts and that's what makes our hard work worthwhile!

Come visit us this Saturday at 3450 Richmond Rd. in the Fast Sign and Pedal the Planet tree lined parking lot. It's right next door to the Glenn Auto Mall just outside Man 'O War Blvd. We'll be there from 9 until 2 and smiles will be plentiful! :) Parking is always convenient and we pride ourselves on being wheelchair and stroller friendly!

The folks from ChiroOne Wellness Center will be visiting with us this Saturday, so stop by and find why you have that “crick” in your neck or that ache in your back! http://www.chiroone.net/

By the way, don't forget our Thursday market at the Fayette County Health Department on Newtown Pike! Select farmers will be there from 4 until 6:30 so it's perfect for after work shopping!

Just want to give you a heads up about an upcoming event...it's going to be Customer Appreciation Day soon!!!! Stay tuned for more details.

Hope to see you all at the only place in town to buy 100% guaranteed homegrown or produced farmers market goodies! And, each of our farmers are individually certified Kentucky Proud or they don't sell at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! That makes us truly Kentucky Proud!!!

Don't forget to cast your vote for Lexington's only 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. It's a great way to show your support for our hardworking farmers and their families. http://www.care2.com/farmersmarket/29529/
