Bluegrass Farmers Market

  (Lexington, Kentucky)
Nothing but 100% Homegrown or Produced at our market!
[ Member listing ]

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The question of the day...should I shop at the grocery store or the farmers market? Actually, they both serve many of our needs and you need to shop at both of them because they each provide the necessities of life. I have to say that I can't remember the last time that I saw toilet paper at a farmers market! Okay, as history tells us, maybe a corn cob might have sufficed in the old days, but not now! Thank heavens for all of us! :)

Yes, grocery stores have many items that we need in our everyday life but do they have the “good for you” things like fruits and vegetables? Sure they do, but do you really know what that “homegrown” sign next to that zucchini, corn, tomatoes, mean? Heck, it could be grown in Minnesota, California, Florida, etc. for all that you know..it's home to someone! That's the reason that you should shop at your local farmers market! And, to even complicate things more...it should be a guaranteed honest to gosh homegrown farmers market like the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Knowing that you are buying nothing but the best from a farmer who actually grew the item is well worth the trip to our market!

The great part is shopping at our market vs. the grocery store doesn't stop in the fruit and veggie aisle! You'll find home baked goods, cheese spreads, herb seasoning, jams, salsa, home crafted soaps, fresh cut flowers, local honey, farm fresh eggs, meats, etc. Yup, we have just about everything but the toilet paper!

That brings us to what you'll find at our markets this week...nothing but homegrown or produced goodness at its best! We grow, raise, bake, make what we sell! Except for the farm fresh eggs...the hens do that for us but we do care for them on our farms!

RICHMOND RD.

R FAMILY FARM will be bringing their organically grown German Johnson and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, along with Chocolate, Gold Nugget and Washington cherry tomatoes! Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I did my usual Saturday morning walk through the Richmond Rd. market and I was so pleased with the variety and quality of the items that our farmers brought to the market. I have been told that the Azur Restaurant & Patio location looked just as good! I'll say it again...summer has finally arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and everyone couldn't be happier! Our farmers are thrilled to see that folks really appreciate the fact that they only bring what they grow, raise, bake or produce to the market. It makes all of their hard work worthwhile knowing that you, our customers, are enjoying the rewards!

Just have to pass on a comment that I received this past Saturday from a first time customer. She told me that it was well worth the drive to our market, even though it was in the country, to buy tomatoes and corn that she knew were homegrown. I had to giggle because while both of our market locations are not located in downtown Lexington, our farmers do not think of us as being in the “country!” I guess after some farmers drive well over an hour to get to the market, they kinda feel like they are coming to the “city!” lol The Richmond Rd. market location is less than a quarter of a mile outside of Man O' War and the Azur market is just outside of New Circle and I promise that you do not have to pack a picnic lunch in order to visit either one them! Besides, parking is always free and much easier than trying to find a spot downtown to park!

So, what will you be able to find at both Bluegrass Farmers' Market locations tomorrow? Here's a list of what our members have told me that they will have available...

RICHMOND RD.

JANE'S GARDENS, FLOWERS & HERBS will be back this Saturday with her beautiful cut flowers...think colorful zinnias! She'll also have plenty of fresh cut basil by the stem or in bunches...think pesto!

JP FOODS will be bringing their wonderful pimento cheese spreads including their Traditional spread and the Bourbon Smoked Pepper spreads. Folks, do not let the word “pepper” throw you off if you are a wimp like me...it is not spicy hot, just wonderful! Make sure you get a sample and you'll see what I mean!

CALUDI'S FIELDS will be bringing their fantastic blueberries, tomatoes and green beans tomorrow...grown right here in Fayette County! Don't forget the great homemade fruit jams...sugar free available too!

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will be arriving from Garrard County with some special sales! Look for ASH FREE(antibiotic, steroid, hormone) “Wagyu” Kobe beef and pork products! Specials include ground Kobe beef in 1 pound rolls...$5.00! Kobe beef patties...$5.25 a pound and pork breakfast patties at $4.00 a pound! Bust out the grills! Don't forget the eggs!

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Before I even begin to tell everyone what wonderful 100% homegrown or produced items will be available this week at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, I want to address and hopefully answer some questions that shoppers had this past Saturday.

We had a few customers who questioned the fact that we are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market because they saw farmers unloading their crops from produce boxes like the type used at a grocery store. First off, we can guarantee that every member has had his or her farm inspected to make sure that they do indeed grow what they sell! Secondly, every farmer that sells any produce has been through GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training...we insist on it before you can become a member! Now, on to the use of boxes/crates...that's how we bring our items to the market! You can't just throw tomatoes into the bed of a truck! The boxes/crates that our farmers use are clean and that assures that our customers do not get contaminated produce. The farmers buy those boxes for their specific fruit or vegetable, they are factory labeled and they are not cheap! Our farmers are proud of what they grow and they want to make sure that nothing but the best goes home with each and every customer!

That brings me to the next comments that we heard. How come all of the tomatoes look perfect? The onions were so clean! The green beans looked perfect! There's no way all of these can be homegrown!!! Oh, yes they can and they are! Our farmers take the time to peel a layer of dirty skin off of that onion. They take the time to “polish” their tomatoes so that you won't find any dirt on them,...think rain and the soil splashing up on them! When our farmers harvest their green beans, they'll toss any that they consider not perfect! If you have ever had any doubts about the honest to gosh homegrown goodness at our market, talk to the farmer...ask them what variety of tomato, green bean, squash, etc. that is. I'll guarantee that you'll get a long winded answer! lol You know why? Because they actually grew that item! They researched the different varieties to find out what does best in our climate and soil! Try doing that at your local grocery store! Are our prices a wee bit higher? Yes they may be, but think about the cost of farming...seeds cost money, gas for equipment is not cheap, hours spent in the hot sun harvesting and then the cost of bringing it to the market so we can guarantee that our customers get nothing but locally grown and always the best! Makes me wonder why we do it? That's easy to answer...we love seeing the smiling faces on our customers and knowing that they are taking a sack full of homegrown goodness back to their family!

So, the next time you see a box or crate being unloaded from one of our farmers trucks...remember that you are supporting a farmer and his or her family and you are getting 100% homegrown...guaranteed!

Okay, I hope those questions have been answered and now on to the business at hand...the goodies that will be available this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Markets!

Summer goodness is in full swing! Tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, melons, berries, etc.! What more can you ask for? How about baked goods, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsa, cheese spreads, wine, meats, eggs, relishes, fresh cut flowers and even home crafted soaps! We've got it all! :)

Celebrate Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Happy Independence Day America! Just a little trivia for you history buffs...did you know that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which just happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Declaration! Although James Monroe was not a Declaration signer, he was the third President in a row who died on July fourth in 1831! And, Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872 and is the only President to be born on Independence Day!

Well, summer goodness has arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market just in time for the 4th of July celebrations! Corn, green beans, tomatoes, squash, peppers and cantaloupes all scream summer and we've got them all plus so much more. Of course, the best part is knowing that they are indeed locally grown by one of our farmer members. Homegrown goodness at its finest! :)

We're not just a fruit and vegetable market...we have producers who bring farm fresh eggs, GMO and ASH and nitrate free meats too! Don't forget the wonderful homemade jams...both fruit sweet and pepper spicy! And, how can you pass up home baked breads and sweet treats! Local award winning wines, fantastic cheese spreads, hand blended dried herb seasoning and hand crafted soaps are available too! Heck, we even have one of a kind flowers made out of Duct tape! Granted they don't smell nearly as nice as the flowers that you see at the market, but they sure are cute!

Let's just say that a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a true local experience and one that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. :) Besides, free and convenient parking is always available. Corn and Tomatoes at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's official, summer is really here! That means we can all start looking forward to wonderful locally homegrown corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers and even some early tomatoes! Yup, you'll be able to find all of these goodies this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Yes, you read it correctly...corn is in. :) We've had customers asking for corn since the market opened the 2014 market season. We had to explain that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a 100% homegrown/produced market and sorry, it just wasn't in season in Kentucky until last week. Homegrown can mean that “someone” grew it “somewhere!” lol Not at our market...we grow what we sell! That means that our customers are guaranteed really local products and we like it that way.

Corn isn't the only summer goodie that will be available...green beans are in too. So are those wonderful for grilling zucchini and yellow squash. The vine ripe tomatoes are still a bit scarce but we will have some. Besides, now is the time to take advantage of those wonderful fried green maters. I don't know about anyone else but the first bite of that crisp cucumber means summer has arrived for me. The lettuce season is slowing down so grab some and have a fresh salad. And, if you've been eating grocery store potatoes all winter...wait until you taste a farm fresh one. The same goes for the flavor of a head of honest to gosh homegrown cabbage. Life is good at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! :)

You've noticed that we say we are a 100% homegrown/produced market. That means that not everything is “grown!” Some items are raised, baked or made by our farmers. Full of flavor meats of all varieties and cuts are raised by our farmers. Home baked goodies like zucchini breads come from our ovens. Home crafted soaps, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsas, etc. are all made by our members. We'll give credit to the hens for laying the eggs! Lol

Now that you know that your purchases are really supporting a local farmer, how about a list of what you will find this Saturday. Remember that this list is always subject to change and chances are you'll find much more at each market.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Winter Warmer Uppers!

It looks like we might get hit with another round of winter weather...hopefully not nearly as cold as the last blast! The great news...only 85 days and a wake up until we'll be opening our 2014 market season! :) Mark your calendars because April 12th is the day!

I thought it would be a great day to share a couple of  “perfect for a cold day” recipes!

First off, from the herb folks at Herb'n Renewal, is a recipe that is sure to warm you up and it uses corn and potatoes that they purchased at the market last year. The corn was blanched, cut off of the cob and frozen and the potatoes have been stored in the garage. Normally they would have had onions too, but darn...they have been using them like mad this winter.

Herb'n Corn Chowder

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

1 1/2 cups celery, diced

1 1/2 cups carrots, peeled and diced

2 pounds potatoes, peeled and diced 1/2”

2 quarts water

2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons chicken soup base

2 quarts frozen corn, thawed

2 heaping tablespoons Cheese'n Season

1 quart milk

roux (equal parts butter and flour)

In a 6 quart pot, saute' onions, carrots and celery in olive oil for 6 minutes. Add potatoes, water, salt and chicken base. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add corn, Cheese'n Season and milk. Return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Slowly add roux to thicken. Cook to desired thickness.

This next recipe comes from Virgil at Clark Farms. Just think how wonderful this bit of sweetness, using a fall favorite like pumpkin will taste on a cold winter night. I'm sure some of our customers even canned some market pumpkins!

Pumpkin Dump Cake

1 (29 oz) can pure pumpkin
1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
3 tsp. cinnamon
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup melted butter.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, salt and cinnamon until well blended. Pour batter into a 9 x 13 inch greased pan. Sprinkle cake mix on top and then cover with pecans. Pour melted butter over top. Bake for 50 minutes.

Enjoy both of these recipes and if you have any that you would like to share with our farmers and customers, please email them to me at fromourfarms@aol.com. We'd love to hear how you have been using your market bounty!

See ya on April 12, 2014!

Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

And, we are talking corn! Boy oh boy...are we ever! I asked farmers, customers and friends for their favorite fresh corn recipes and I realized that next to tomatoes, I think corn is the crowd favorite this time of the year. :) And, everyone has their way of preparing and enjoying this summer treat.

I thought I would share a few of their favorites with you but how about the basics first.

Standard in the pot boiling method...Shuck corn and wash off the silks. Place the corn in a large pot and cover with cold water. Put the lid on the pot and bring to a boil. Once the water reaches a good rolling boil, turn off the heat and leave the pot for about 3 minutes. You can also add the corn to already boiling water and continue to boil for 5 minutes or until tender. If you use this method, try adding some sugar to your water...yum!

Steaming works great too. Just shuck and de-silk, wash under cold water and add to the steamer basket over boiling water, cover and continue to steam for about 10 minutes.

Oven roasting is becoming very popular these days. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place the corn, husks and all, directly on the oven rack and roast for 30 minutes. Be careful removing from the oven...they will be hot. Peel the husks back and remove the silks. Roll in butter and enjoy!

Microwaving is easy and a delicious way to cook just a few ears of corn. Leave the husk and silk on the cob, microwave on high for 3 minutes per ear. The husk and silk will peel right off. Just be careful handling it...it's gonna be hot!

Got the grill going? Grilled corn is wonderful! No need to shuck it before grilling, just rinse under cold water and place on the grill. It should take about 20-30 minutes...make sure you turn it occasional because you want a nice char on all sides. Be careful removing it and pulling back the husk...it's hot! Butter and enjoy, no fork needed, just use the husk as a holder. :) BTW, Parmesan cheese sprinkled on the buttered corn is wonderful!

Now for some great recipes...

A friend shared one of her favorite ways to use her garden fresh corn and it sounds wonderful and not as hard as I would have thought. Here's a link to the recipe that she uses from the Ball canning site for Homestyle Corn Relish. http://www.freshpreserving.com/recipe.aspx?r=79

This cool summer recipe comes from the Herb'n Renewal folks using their Herb'n Cowboy seasoning blend.

Cowboy Corn'n Black Bean Salsa

1 15 oz. can black beans, rinsed and drained

2 cups fresh corn cut off of the cob

2 cups tomatoes, diced or a 14.5 oz. can of petite diced tomatoes

1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced

1/2 cup onion, diced

1 cup zucchini, diced

1 tablespoon Herb'n Cowboy

2 tablespoons lime juice

Mix all ingredients well and let sit in fridge until well chilled. Serve with tortilla chips. Makes 1 1/2 quarts.

This next recipe comes from Virgil at Clark Farm...

“Sweet corn is now getting ready to pick. Try something new this year.

Sweet Corn Fritters

What kid doesn’t like pancakes? I find that they not only make weekend breakfasts memorable but can be a great vessel for a vegetable side dish. These fritters make the sweet corn of summer sing and will have your kids loving their vegetables. They aren’t messy either so can be placed in a Ziploc and brought to the park or the beach for a snack.

Ingredients
2 ears fresh corn (to yield 2 cups kernels)
1/2cup flour
1/3 c cornmeal
1 tsp salt
1/2 t baking powder
1/2 c milk
1 egg
4 T olive oil

Method
Remove husks and silk from corn. With a sharp knife, slice the kernels off each cob into a bowl , you should have about 2 cups kernels. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cornmeal, salt and baking powder. Make a ‘well’ in the center of the flour mixture. Crack the egg and pour the milk into the well. Briefly whisk with a fork and then whisk into the flour until just combined. With a spatula, fold in corn kernels.

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium/low with 2 T olive oil. When the oil is hot, spoon batter into skillet to make 2 inch fritters. Cook 3 minutes until the sides of each fritter is beginning to cook, then flip and cook another 3 minutes. Remove to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Add more oil if necessary before making more batches. Yields 10-12 fritters.

Grown up Embellishment: 2 T chopped scallion & ¼ tsp crushed red pepper mixed into corn.”

I saved what might be the most unusual recipe for last. I have to admit that I had never considered using fresh corn for ice cream! A friend shared this site with me and I have to tell you...I might be making corn ice cream this weekend! lol http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-sweet-co-11255

By the way, corn is so easy to freeze so that you can enjoy it in January. We do nothing more than cut the stem end off enough to fit into a gallon freezer bag. Fill them up and label them. On a cold day when you want some summer goodness, just thaw the corn cobs, shuck and remove the silk and prepare your favorite way. Enjoy a wee bit of summer while the snow falls! :)

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I was walking through the Richmond Rd. market last week and I had to smile to myself. I kept thinking about the years when I shopped at a grocery store and purchased onions, potatoes, squash, etc. I had no idea what variety they were and I'll almost guarantee that the produce clerks didn't either...heck, it was a red or white potato! A red, purple, yellow or white onion! And, squash was yellow or green! Boy, am I glad that my farmer friends have educated me to the point where I actually know what potatoes are good for frying, which ones I should mash and I also know that only certain squash work great for grilling. That's the great part of a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...the farmers actually grew what they are selling and they know about their products...just ask them for advice when trying something new.

Still thinking about varieties, here's a bit of what you'll find at the Richmond Rd. location on Saturday...

I have only received a small bit of information about what will be available at the Mill Pond Shopping Center satellite market this Saturday but what I did get is great! Look for...

Ed to bring his giant elephant ear plants and his wonderful garlic to the satellite market for this one day!

Robert will be permanently joining the new market with his rhubarb, onions, potatoes, squash, peppers and fresh cut flowers!

I am sure you will be able to find much more including corn, tomatoes and green beans.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market News!!!

We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I know that we enjoyed the fireworks, the patriotic music and most of all the fresh corn and tomatoes to go along with our hamburgers! To me the 4th of July holiday seems to be the real start of summer and all of the fresh goodness that comes with the warm weather. I'm talking corn, tomatoes, green beans, squash, new potatoes and peppers...it just doesn't get any better than that!

Our Tuesday market promises some great summer goodies! Look for...

Don't forget to mark your calendars...

July 16th is Customer Appreciation Day

at both market locations!

Speaking of “both” markets, we'd just like to let everyone know that our satellite market at Mill Pond Shopping Center is still going (and growing) strong even though there are no signs up. It seems like vandals stole the 4' x 8' banners and even took the posts that they were hanging from. We're not sure who would steal farmers market signs but the Lexington Police Department is looking into it. But, we're happy to report that it will be business as usual at Mill Pond! More good news about the satellite market...it's growing in leaps and bounds! In fact, one of our Richmond Rd. farmers, Robert from Stonehome Farm is now going to be selling at the new market! That just means that our customers might find that a trip to two markets each Saturday is the thing to do! :)

Celebration Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

This weekend is a time to celebrate. We get to bust out the red, white and blue and enjoy our freedom by watching parades, smiling at firework displays and eating summertime favorites at picnics. Yup, it's the 4th of July or Independence Day! A day to celebrate our wonderful country and the people that make it so great. That means the folks who work hard to provide us all with the one thing we all need...food! And, there's no better way to show how much we appreciate the farmers than to support them by buying locally grown, raised or produced food. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is Lexington's largest 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. That means that our farmers actually grew the fruits and veggies, raised the cattle, baked the breads, made the jams and nothing has been purchased for resale! We guarantee it, it's the way a farmers market should be.

Okay, I can't think of anything better on my July 4th picnic table than fresh grilled corn, sliced tomatoes and a juicy burger! Guess what? We have all of it available...yes, we have the season's first corn!!! But that's not all we have...here's a bit of what will be available at our two markets this Saturday.
