2013 Bluegrass Farmers' Market season comes to an end!

Well, the time has come for our 2013 market season to come to an end. Saturday will be our last market day for the year. But, the good news is we'll be back in April! We'd all like to thank our customers for making 2013 such a great year for us. We continued to set up each Tuesday and Saturday at our main Richmond Rd. location. And, we added a new Thursday and Saturday market at Stonewall Center. Both markets proved to be very popular with our customers and farmers alike.

Even though the market is coming to a close, our farmers are still working hard. The daylight hours are spent preparing fields and the evening hours are spent scouring seed catalogs. This is where our customers come in...our farmers want to know what you'd like to see next year at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Is there something special? Did you notice a lack of anything this year? Please do not hesitate to send us your suggestions and comments. The blog will continue all winter long with updates, recipes and news. So, join in and let us know what you think!

Okay, time to let everyone know what you'll find at the market on Saturday...

Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I always hate being the bearer of bad news, but here goes...the Stonewall Center market has closed for the 2013 season. It was a great new market for us and we certainly appreciated the support that our new customers showed us.

The really great news...the Richmond Rd. market will be open through October 26th! That means that you have two more weeks to stock up on all that our farmers have to offer! Think canning, freezing, drying or just stocking up on “we've already done the work for ya” items like jams, jellies, herb seasoning, bean soup mixes and homemade soaps. They make great gifts too! :)

So, what will you be able to find this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market?

Kirby Overman will be bringing his wonderful tomatoes!

Linda from McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing her super pepper selection...hot, sweet and in between! Tomatoes and okra will be in short supply, so shop early. She'll be bringing pie pumpkins too! Pepper and fruit jams...including grape jelly! And, if you are looking for a perfect gift...think a jar of beautifully layered dried bean soup mix!

Jane O'Tiernan will be bringing her beautiful cut flowers...believe me they are full of color and are sure to brighten any day! Her basil is great too!

Judy at Caludi's Fields will have heirloom tomatoes and her wonderful fruit jams!

The folks at Hughes Farm will be making sure that the wonderful aromas from their grilling and cooking wafts through the market. Goat and lamb with fresh market veggies...it just doesn't get any better than that! Heck, yes it does...super delicious pumpkin baked goodies too! Don't forget that you can purchase their lamb and goat and cook it yourself! Just ask for some directions if you need to.

Tami and/or Tom from My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their wonderful handmade bath soaps, laundry soaps and lotion to the market. They will also have soaps and soap dishes all wrapped up for gift giving! By the way, this might be your last chance to purchase their products at the market.

On Tapp Dairy will be bringing their wonderful free range eggs, chicken, beef, pork...bacon and hams too! Freshness just doesn't get any better!

The “we take the guesswork out of seasoning” Herb'n Renewal folks, Karin and Drew, will be bringing plenty of hand blended herb seasoning with them. These make great gifts and they always supply recipes! An extra added attraction will be walking onion sets from Tomatoes, etc.! You'll also be able to find the crowd favorite...Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies. And, for the next two weeks, look for affordable gift baskets with soap, bath salts and an extra added surprise!

Sorry to say that the “Two Old Troubadours” will not be with us this Saturday...they will be delighting folks with their music at another location. But, they will be back to serenade us on our last market day!

There might be other surprises...somehow, farmers just happen to show up without letting anyone know, so you might find all sorts of other goodies!

The great news...the weather folks are predicting a beautiful Saturday! Even more great news...our farmers are still bringing 100% homegrown goodness to the market! That includes some of what most folks think of as “summer stuff” like corn and tomatoes. Think jams, jellies, homemade soaps, wine, etc. A gift package full of 100% Kentucky Proud products would be a welcome gift for anyone. If this year is anything like the past market years, you'll be seeing more gift items like soup beans, fruit and pepper jams, herb baskets and soap gifts, etc. We'll keep you updated on the list of gift ideas.

Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The government might be shutdown, but not the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! We're business as usual this Saturday.

It looks like Mother Nature will be bringing some fall weather into our area next week. Time to get those fall decorations like, pumpkins, gourds and bittersweet out. It's also chili time! We've got the herb seasoning, the tomatoes, peppers and the meat to create the perfect pot of chili for tailgating. Don't forget to try grilling some veggies too! Ask a farmer for some suggestions. :)

We are starting to wind down for the 2013 market season...the Richmond Rd market will be open through October 26th and the Stonewall Center market will continue until October 12th. There's still plenty of time to shop!

Wow, What a Great Saturday Market!

This Saturday is going to be a busy one for the local Lexington food lovers! It's the “Follow the Food Farm Tour” day. And, we are happy to say that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, Richmond Rd. location, will be one of the venues on the tour. We'll have some samples, homegrown treats for the kids and plenty of homegrown goodness available. The Fayette County Extension Master Gardener Program will have folks on hand to answer your gardening and tour questions. We are also proud to say that one of our members, Botanica, is on the tour. Stop by the market and then head out Richmond Rd. to Vicki's farm. Heck, don't stop there with the proud member stuff...Grimes Mill Winery will be celebrating their second anniversary! By the way, if you have been to the market in the past few weeks, surely you have noticed the great music coming from the Two Old Troubadours! They'll be at the Grimes Mill Winery celebration from 3 until 5...rain or shine! On top of all of this excitement, your friendly author of the blogs turns 65 on Saturday! lol  I say we all celebrate the localness! :)

Here's a link to the farm tour just in case you have missed it. Http://www.fayettecountyfarmtour.com

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Last Saturday was quite a day for many of our farmers. The rain (storms) proved to be a wee bit more than many of our non vegetable farmers could handle. Dried herb seasoning, pimento and beer cheese and wine bottles do not fare well in the pouring down rain! What a shame, because it was our Back To School Day and we had a bunch of insulated lunch bags to give away. Guess what...our fruit and veggies farmers stayed on during the rain and they had plenty to hand out to the crowds that showed up once the sun came out. :) If you missed out on a lunch bag, chances are we might have a few left!

Don't forget that just because school has started and the pools have closed...that does not mean that the market has closed. We are still open and still growing strong! Many customers have asked how long we will be open for the 2013 season. We'll be here to bring you nothing but the best homegrown that the area has to offer through the last Saturday in October...October 26th!

Here's just a bit of what you'll be able to find at our markets tomorrow...

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Only one more week until our “Back To School Day!” On August 31st, we'll be giving away a limited number of insulated lunch totes, so shop early! Both market locations will be participating. And, by the way they are Wildcat blue or in our case...Bluegrass blue!!!

Summer is still in full swing and you can sure tell by the homegrown goodness available at the market. The tomatoes are wonderful, the corn is spectacular and the green beans are to die for! Many of our farmers have what they call “seconds” available. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them except that they aren't pretty...wonderful for canning or freezing though. If you don't see any on the tables, ask the farmer because he or she might have them hidden away.

So, what will you be able to find at the two markets on Saturday? Here's a partial list...

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather. It was so nice to be able to open the windows and air the house out today...and in August no less! But, never fear, summer is still with us and the air conditioners will be working full force next week.

School has started in most areas and the pools will soon close. For some reason folks think that farmers markets close too. We do not! In fact, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be open through the end of October! We are actually going to celebrate going back to school on August 31st. Make sure you mark your calendars because we will be giving away a limited number of insulated lunch totes!

Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

And, we're talking potatoes, spuds, taters...whatever you call them! Don't confuse the ones that you buy at the grocery store with the fresh ones available at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! There is no comparison, trust me. Once you've eaten a freshly dug tater, you'll be wishing that you had a cold cellar to store them in all winter long.

Before I pass on the recipes that friends, family and farmers shared with me, I'd like to give you a tip that I got from a true Irish lass. When making mashed potatoes, boil them until tender, turn the burner off and drain the potatoes...immediately return them to the stove and let them sit in the pot for a minute or two to remove the last of the moisture. Mash as usual...your taters will be extra fluffy!

Now on to the recipes...

Herb'n Smashed Taters

12 small – medium new potatoes

3 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 cup butter, melted

Good'n Garlicky or Smoke'n Season

Salt and pepper to taste

Scrub potatoes leaving the skin on. Boil in salted water until just fork tender. Remove and drain...pat taters dry. Drizzle olive oil on a large cookie sheet pan..spread so that it's evenly covered in the oil. Place the taters evenly on the pan. Now comes the fun part...take your potato masher or a fork and press down on each tater, then do the same thing in the opposite direction. You want a criss-cross, smashed tater. :) Brush the tops of each tater with the melted butter. Sprinkle with either Good'n Garlicky or Smoke'n Season...or both like we did! Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven, on the top rack, for 20 minutes or until they are crispy and browned. Salt and pepper to taste.

Scalloped Potatoes

6 potatoes, peeled and sliced

1 medium onion, chopped

2 teaspoons salt

pepper to taste

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

2 cups of hot milk

1 cup grated Cheddar cheese

Melt the butter in a double boiler or heavy sauce pan. Add flour, salt, pepper and stir until smooth. Slowly add the hot milk, stirring constantly. When it thickens, add the grated cheese and stir until melted into sauce. In a buttered casserole dish or baking pan, layer the potatoes, onions and cheese sauce...repeat until you use it all. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for one hour.

Amish Potato Salad

6 medium potatoes

1 small onion, chopped

1 cup celery, diced

1 teaspoon celery seed

1 teaspoon salt

4 hard boiled eggs, chopped

Cook potatoes in their skins until tender. Cool, peel and dice. Mix potatoes gently with the remaining ingredient. Then toss with the following cooled dressing...

1 beaten egg

1/2 cup sugar

1 tablespoon flour

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup vinegar

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

In a small sauce pan, combine ingredients in the order given, stirring after each addition. Cook until thick. Cool before tossing with potato mixture.

Ranch Potato Crisps

3 medium potatoes

1 tablespoon oil

1 package dry ranch style dressing mix

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Scrub potatoes, leaving the skins on. Slice into 1/4” slices. Toss potatoes with oil to coat. Add salad dressing mix and toss again. Place potatoes on a single layer in a baking pan or better yet, a baking stone. Do not overlap slices! Bake 40 – 45 minutes or until potatoes are crisp and browned.

Hasselback Potatoes

This next recipe is one that a friend told me that I really need to try. I thought I would just include the link seen as how the picture is sooooooooo delicious looking. :)

http://whatscookingamerica.net/Vegetables/HasselbackPotatoes.htm

This next recipe comes from Virgil Clark of Clark Farm...

Fried Potato Cakes

2 cups cold leftover mashed potatoes

1/2 cup fine chopped onions

1 egg, beaten

1/4 cup flour

Kentucky Kernel Seasoned flour for dipping

Olive oil or vegetable oil

Stir beaten egg, onions and flour into potatoes. Form into patties. Dip both sides into Kentucky Kernel Seasoned flour and brown in hot oil. Makes 4 – 6 servings.

This last recipe is an old fashioned favorite!

Mashed Potato Candy

3/4 cup mashed potatoes

1 teaspoon vanilla

4 cups confectioner's powdered sugar, sifted

4 cups flaked coconut

1 12 oz. package chocolate chips

1/2 paraffin bar

Combine the potatoes, vanilla, sugar and coconut; mix well. Chill overnight in the refrigerate. Shape into balls and return to the refrigerator. Melt the chocolate chips and the paraffin in a double boiler. Use a toothpick inserted into each ball and dip in chocolate mixture. Place on waxed paper to cool.

No matter how you prepare your spuds, just remember that freshly dug ones from the market are 100% better tasting than grocery ones.

It's Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

And, we're talking melons! We all know how wonderful a big slice of watermelon tastes on a warm summer evening. And, you probably remember having seed spitting contests too! lol I can remember starting my summer mornings with a cantaloupe half sprinkled with a bit of salt. Now, that was a great breakfast for me and it still is! :)

I enjoy melons so much that I had to find other ways to eat them. I asked friends for their suggestions and these are just a sampling of what I received in response. Have to admit that I will be a melon buying fool this Saturday...I can't wait to try these recipes.

Remember to thoroughly wash the outside of your melon before cutting into it!!!!

Mixed Melon Salsa

1 1/2 cups cubed watermelon

1 1/2 cups cubed cantaloupe

2 tomatoes, diced

2 peaches, diced

1 small Candy onion, finely diced

2 jalapeno peppers or 1/2 cup green bell pepper if you want less heat

1 lime, juiced

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

drizzle of honey

1 teaspoon fresh finely chopped mint

12 basil leaves, chopped

salt and pepper

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and serve with tortilla chips. This salsa is also good served on top of grilled shrimp, fish or chicken.

Melon Soup

3/4 cup orange juice

1 cup yogurt

1 medium cantaloupe, peeled, seeded and cubed

1 tablespoon honey

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Place the orange juice, yogurt and cantaloupe in a blender, cover and process until pureed. Add the honey, salt and cayenne, cover and process until smooth. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Jello Melon

1 large cantaloupe

1 3 oz. package Jello, your flavor choice...we love strawberry!

1 cup boiling watermelon

1/2 cup applesauce

1 cup fresh fruit or berries (do not use pineapple!)

Cut melon in half lengthwise from stem end to bud end. Remove seeds. Cut a thin slice out of the rind on the bottom of each half so that the melon will sit level. In a large bowl, dissolve Jello in boiling water. Stir in applesauce and fruit. Pour into melon halves. If you have any Jello left...let it cool in a bowl and enjoy with a spoon! Cover melon with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Just before serving, cut each half into three wedges.

Grilled Melon

Cut melon into 1” slices or rings. Remove seeds. Sprinkle one side with a bit of brown sugar. Make sure your grill is clean! Heat to medium high and then place the melon on the rack. Let grill for about 4 minutes. Flip and sprinkle with a bit more brown sugar. Grill for another 4 minutes...serve with ice cream

Melon Cooler

Simply blend ice, melon chunks, a glop of honey and as much orange juice as needed to make it smooth!

Melon Cucumber Salad

6 cups watermelon, cubed

4 cups cucumber, seeded and cubed

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

Toss melon with salt and sugar. Drizzle the vinegar over the melon. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Toss again, just before serving.

And, don't forget that you can “de-rind and de-seed” and then cut into cubes or scoop into balls and freeze them on cookie sheet pans...when frozen, place them in a plastic freezer bag. You'll get to enjoy melon all winter long.
