Sweet Recipe Time at Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I woke up this morning and had an urge for something sweet and my morning oatmeal with turbinado sugar did not take care of it. What's a girl to do when she needs sweet stuff? Bake a pie!!! I'm so glad that Virgil Clark shared a recipe for one of my favorites....butterscotch pie! I thought I had better share it with all of you, just in case anyone else is having a sweet attack like me! :)

Old Fashioned Butterscotch Pie

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
1 cup water
3 eggs
4 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
4 tablespoons butter (or margarine)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
4 tablespoons granulated or powdered sugar

Directions:
Add water to brown sugar in saucepan, bring to a boil and boil to make a thin syrup. Separate eggs. Stir flour into egg yolks and add milk gradually, stirring to prevent lumping. Add egg/flour/milk mixture to syrup and boil until thickens. Remove from heat and add butter, vanilla and salt. Pour into baked pie shell.

Top with meringue: egg whites beaten until stiff, adding cream of tartar and powdered sugar gradually while beating. Bake in 350 degree oven until peaks are lightly browned.

Sharing Bluegrass Farmers' Market recipes!

Here's another recipe from Virgil Clark of Clark Farms. It sounds wonderful, especially if you use pork sausage from On Tapp Dairy, farm fresh eggs from Hughes Farm, Rejoicing Acres or On Tapp Dairy!

This is good any time or if you have overnight guests, fix the night before and the next morning while you are having coffee, breakfast is in the oven cooking.

Breakfast Casserole

Ingredients
6 slices white bread
1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 teaspoon dry mustard
5 eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cups grated Swiss cheese

Instructions
Grease a lasagna pan large enough to hold the slices of bread laid out flat. Brown the sausage, drain the grease, and stir in the dry mustard. Beat the eggs and milk together with the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Place the bread slices in the lasagna pan, spoon the sausage and then the cheese over the bread. Pour the egg mixture over all. Refrigerate overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.

Yield: 6 servings

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Recipes!

I asked our member farmers to share some of their favorite recipes with me and Virgil Clark of Clark Farm came through with a bunch of them! WTG Virgil! :)

I was outside hanging the laundry and I realized how warm, sunny and nice the day was going to be so I thought I would share a couple of his favorite salad recipes. I think these might work great for holiday meals too! :)

If anyone would like to share their recipes with us, please just email them to fromourfarms@aol.com and make sure you include your name and any story behind the recipe.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market News!

Tomorrow morning will feel very strange for many of us. The farmers are used to bringing their goodies to the market and setting up. The customers are used to seeing those smiling farmers faces. Unfortunately, our last Saturday market for the 2013 season was last week. We'll miss everyone and we hope that you will be missing us.

Don't think that our farmers are not working and taking time off. They are planting their fields with cover crops, ordering seeds for spring planting and in some cases...planting items that need the winter to grow, like garlic!

Now is the time to speak up and let our farmers know what you would like to see next year...especially for the spring crops! Was there enough lettuce? Did you find plenty of spring greens? How many times did you miss out on onions and radishes? Was there something that you wanted but never saw at the market? Please comment and let us know. The only way we can grow better for you, our customers, is if we know what you want! Good, bad or otherwise...comments are appreciated.

Stay tuned for more recipes, news and general comments all winter long. The market might be closed for the season but we are still going strong until we open again in April, 2014!

We'd all like to thank our customers for making 2013 such a great year for us. We continued to set up each Tuesday and Saturday at our main Richmond Rd. location. And, we added a new Thursday and Saturday market at Stonewall Center. Both markets proved to be very popular with our customers and farmers alike.

Even though the market is coming to a close, our farmers are still working hard. The daylight hours are spent preparing fields and the evening hours are spent scouring seed catalogs. This is where our customers come in...our farmers want to know what you'd like to see next year at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Is there something special? Did you notice a lack of anything this year? Please do not hesitate to send us your suggestions and comments. The blog will continue all winter long with updates, recipes and news. So, join in and let us know what you think!

Okay, time to let everyone know what you'll find at the market on Saturday...

Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I always hate being the bearer of bad news, but here goes...the Stonewall Center market has closed for the 2013 season. It was a great new market for us and we certainly appreciated the support that our new customers showed us.

The really great news...the Richmond Rd. market will be open through October 26th! That means that you have two more weeks to stock up on all that our farmers have to offer! Think canning, freezing, drying or just stocking up on “we've already done the work for ya” items like jams, jellies, herb seasoning, bean soup mixes and homemade soaps. They make great gifts too! :)

So, what will you be able to find this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market?

Kirby Overman will be bringing his wonderful tomatoes!

Linda from McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing her super pepper selection...hot, sweet and in between! Tomatoes and okra will be in short supply, so shop early. She'll be bringing pie pumpkins too! Pepper and fruit jams...including grape jelly! And, if you are looking for a perfect gift...think a jar of beautifully layered dried bean soup mix!

Jane O'Tiernan will be bringing her beautiful cut flowers...believe me they are full of color and are sure to brighten any day! Her basil is great too!

Judy at Caludi's Fields will have heirloom tomatoes and her wonderful fruit jams!

The folks at Hughes Farm will be making sure that the wonderful aromas from their grilling and cooking wafts through the market. Goat and lamb with fresh market veggies...it just doesn't get any better than that! Heck, yes it does...super delicious pumpkin baked goodies too! Don't forget that you can purchase their lamb and goat and cook it yourself! Just ask for some directions if you need to.

Tami and/or Tom from My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their wonderful handmade bath soaps, laundry soaps and lotion to the market. They will also have soaps and soap dishes all wrapped up for gift giving! By the way, this might be your last chance to purchase their products at the market.

On Tapp Dairy will be bringing their wonderful free range eggs, chicken, beef, pork...bacon and hams too! Freshness just doesn't get any better!

The “we take the guesswork out of seasoning” Herb'n Renewal folks, Karin and Drew, will be bringing plenty of hand blended herb seasoning with them. These make great gifts and they always supply recipes! An extra added attraction will be walking onion sets from Tomatoes, etc.! You'll also be able to find the crowd favorite...Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies. And, for the next two weeks, look for affordable gift baskets with soap, bath salts and an extra added surprise!

Sorry to say that the “Two Old Troubadours” will not be with us this Saturday...they will be delighting folks with their music at another location. But, they will be back to serenade us on our last market day!

There might be other surprises...somehow, farmers just happen to show up without letting anyone know, so you might find all sorts of other goodies!

The government might be shutdown, but not the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! We're business as usual this Saturday.

It looks like Mother Nature will be bringing some fall weather into our area next week. Time to get those fall decorations like, pumpkins, gourds and bittersweet out. It's also chili time! We've got the herb seasoning, the tomatoes, peppers and the meat to create the perfect pot of chili for tailgating. Don't forget to try grilling some veggies too! Ask a farmer for some suggestions. :)

We are starting to wind down for the 2013 market season...the Richmond Rd market will be open through October 26th and the Stonewall Center market will continue until October 12th. There's still plenty of time to shop!

Wow, What a Great Saturday Market!

This Saturday is going to be a busy one for the local Lexington food lovers! It's the “Follow the Food Farm Tour” day. And, we are happy to say that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, Richmond Rd. location, will be one of the venues on the tour. We'll have some samples, homegrown treats for the kids and plenty of homegrown goodness available. The Fayette County Extension Master Gardener Program will have folks on hand to answer your gardening and tour questions. We are also proud to say that one of our members, Botanica, is on the tour. Stop by the market and then head out Richmond Rd. to Vicki's farm. Heck, don't stop there with the proud member stuff...Grimes Mill Winery will be celebrating their second anniversary! By the way, if you have been to the market in the past few weeks, surely you have noticed the great music coming from the Two Old Troubadours! They'll be at the Grimes Mill Winery celebration from 3 until 5...rain or shine! On top of all of this excitement, your friendly author of the blogs turns 65 on Saturday! lol  I say we all celebrate the localness! :)

Here's a link to the farm tour just in case you have missed it. Http://www.fayettecountyfarmtour.com

Okay, it seems as though there might be a touch of fall in the air. The air conditioners are turned off and the windows are all open...I am sitting here typing with goose bumps all over my legs! Guess I better go put on some long britches. Lol

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Last Saturday was quite a day for many of our farmers. The rain (storms) proved to be a wee bit more than many of our non vegetable farmers could handle. Dried herb seasoning, pimento and beer cheese and wine bottles do not fare well in the pouring down rain! What a shame, because it was our Back To School Day and we had a bunch of insulated lunch bags to give away. Guess what...our fruit and veggies farmers stayed on during the rain and they had plenty to hand out to the crowds that showed up once the sun came out. :) If you missed out on a lunch bag, chances are we might have a few left!

Don't forget that just because school has started and the pools have closed...that does not mean that the market has closed. We are still open and still growing strong! Many customers have asked how long we will be open for the 2013 season. We'll be here to bring you nothing but the best homegrown that the area has to offer through the last Saturday in October...October 26th!

Here's just a bit of what you'll be able to find at our markets tomorrow...

Back To School Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Summer is unofficially over after this Labor Day weekend. Someone needs to tell Mother Nature that! 90 degree temperatures is not what one would call Fall weather! lol No matter...we get to celebrate two things. It's Labor Day and that means our farmers will be bringing the fruits of their labor to the market on Saturday. And the kids have returned to school so we are celebrating with a Back To School Day! Both markets will have a limited supply of insulated lunch bags that will be given away on Saturday, so shop early! By the way, they are Wildcat Blue in color but we call it Bluegrass Market Blue.

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Only one more week until our “Back To School Day!” On August 31st, we'll be giving away a limited number of insulated lunch totes, so shop early! Both market locations will be participating. And, by the way they are Wildcat blue or in our case...Bluegrass blue!!!

Summer is still in full swing and you can sure tell by the homegrown goodness available at the market. The tomatoes are wonderful, the corn is spectacular and the green beans are to die for! Many of our farmers have what they call “seconds” available. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them except that they aren't pretty...wonderful for canning or freezing though. If you don't see any on the tables, ask the farmer because he or she might have them hidden away.

So, what will you be able to find at the two markets on Saturday? Here's a partial list...

Free Lunch Totes!

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather. It was so nice to be able to open the windows and air the house out today...and in August no less! But, never fear, summer is still with us and the air conditioners will be working full force next week.

School has started in most areas and the pools will soon close. For some reason folks think that farmers markets close too. We do not! In fact, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be open through the end of October! We are actually going to celebrate going back to school on August 31st. Make sure you mark your calendars because we will be giving away a limited number of insulated lunch totes!

So, what will you be able to find at the two markets on Saturday? Here's a partial list...
