This Week At The Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The kids are back in school, the weather folks keep telling us that the meteorological fall season has started, the pools have closed, windows are being opened and the AC is being turned off. What does that mean for the folks at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market?

It means we are busier than ever!!!

There's still plenty of the warm weather crops to tend to and some of the fall crops have been planted but there's still more to go in the ground. The only time a farmer gets to stop is when we have snow covered grounds and even then they are ordering seeds for the following year. Thank heavens the snow is a long way off and we still get to do what we love...get our hands dirty!

This week you'll be able to find tomatoes of all types including heirlooms, sweet and hot peppers, a huge variety of potatoes, kale, squash, cucumbers, carrots, onions, okra, green beans, fresh cut herbs, rhubarb, raspberries, watermelons and maybe even some corn!

If that's not enough to tempt you to visit us, how about wonderful jams and jellies, home baked goods, award winning honey, herb seasoning, Amish cheese, ASH Free beef and farm fresh eggs! And, if you missed out on a sample of the wonderful beer cheese...it's back this week! Don't forget the smell good things like fresh cut flowers and wonderful homemade soaps! Some of them are even made with local bee pollen!

As you can see we are still very busy doing what we love...growing and producing for you!

Weekday Market Doings!

I was sitting here this morning trying to think of a way to let folks know just how wonderful the Bluegrass Farmers' Market really is and I decided that I'd probably just tell you what went home with me at the end of Saturday's market. I can tell you, it was quite a haul of fresh veggies and berries!

We enjoyed the most delicious fresh corn on the cob last night along with our wonderful ASH free beef burgers that were topped with fabulous tomatoes! Our plates looked more like serving platters by the time we added the crisp sliced cucumber and onion salad along with the extra heirloom tomatoes that we just had to try. By the way, the German Stripey's and Japanese something...sorry, I cannot remember the name of them...tomatoes were great! Heck, I'm not done yet. My hubby roasted some fingerling potatoes on the grill and Oh My Gosh, we're they ever good! He rubbed them with a bit of bacon drippings and then sprinkled them with coarse sea salt. Talk about heaven! You'd have thought that we would have been stuffed by the end of the meal but we managed to save room for a slice of fantastic jam cake that was drizzled with a decadent raspberry sauce that I made with those wonderful berries and local honey! I have to admit that the two of us could hardly move after dinner but, the funny part was, we were both thinking about the next meal! Lol Yup, there's still some wonderful greens beans, eggplant, zucchini and squash waiting for our next meal.

Geez, forgot to let you know that we started the day out with a huge breakfast of farm fresh eggs, fried taters, sliced tomatoes and homebaked bread loaded with homemade jam! Makes me wonder how we even managed to do anything yesterday. But we did get a bunch of green peppers chopped and frozen for use in chili this winter. We even froze some wonderful hot peppers so hubby could spice his up a bit more!

About the only thing I didn't come home with were flowers and plants. Believe me it wasn't because they weren't beautiful...it was because I didn't have anymore room in the van! I promised myself that I would save some space next week.

I have to tell you that it really makes you feel great to know that you can prepare and enjoy meals using nothing but locally grown goodies! And, the fresh flavor can't be beat. I'm already thinking about my farmers market list for this week!

Come join us at Lexington's only 100% homegrown or produced farmers market. You'll be greeted by hardworking farmers who can still manage to smile after harvesting that day and you'll leave with a bounty of fresh, homegrown goodness! It don't get no better than that!!!

August is almost here and we're loaded with goodies!

Saturday is almost here and from what I have seen, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be loaded with homegrown goodness once again! And, in case you didn't know, there is a difference between “local” and “homegrown!” The word “local” means that the product was grown or produced in any certain area. “Homegrown” means that the actual farmer grew it! That's what makes the Bluegrass Farmers' Market different from other markets in the area...we're 100% homegrown or produced! We do it all, we don't buy anything to resell even it if is from our local area. When you buy something from one of our farmers you will know that you are supporting the actual farmer and his or her family! We love that aspect of our market and we're so glad that our customers do to!

So, what homegrown or home produced goodness will you find at the market this week? It's a long list so hang on and be prepared to enjoy the ride! lol

Tomatoes, red, green and heirlooms too!

Corn, yellow and bi-colored!

Green Beans, Romas, Tenderettes, Wax, etc.!

Squash, Cousa, Magda, Zucchini, Yellow, Patty Pan, etc.!

Potatoes, red and white and even some new taters!

Onions, Candy, yellow and red or purple...whatever you choose to call them!

Okra!

Cucumbers, both slicing and pickling!

Peppers, hot, mild, green, red and yellow!

Blackberries!

Herbs, fresh cut and dried!

Flowers, fresh cut and growing in baskets and pots!

Homebaked goodies galore including breads, cookies and cakes!

Hand blended herb seasoning!

Honey!

Homemade soaps!

Jams, jellies and butters!

Farm fresh eggs!

ASH free beef!

Amish cheese!

And, so much more!!!

Hope you all noticed the use of the “!!!!”...it's the excitement coming out in me!

Our farmers and producers are here to make your farmers market shopping day one to remember. We know what we grow and produce and we're here to assist you in any way that we can with preparation and storage. In other words, get it first hand from the actual farmer!!! And. What's happening Tuesday at the market!

What a beautiful day Saturday turned out to be. Mother Nature was very cooperative by holding off the rain until after the market and that meant that our shoppers could enjoy the sunshine as much as we did. Speaking of shoppers, it was wonderful to see so many new faces! I guess word is getting out that there is a market in town that guarantees 100% homegrown or produced items. It's hard to compete with other markets that have tomatoes, corn and melons available. But, we sure are glad that folks like the thought of going to a farmers market and finding items that the farmer actually grew, raised, baked or made and not stuff purchased at a terminal. It makes all of our hard work more enjoyable to see the smiles when they know we really did it ourselves!!! And, it makes the saying “buy local” all the more important.

Our Tuesday market is a bit small because many of our farmers have “real” jobs in order to support their love of farming. But I can tell you that the offerings that will be there are great. I know because our family enjoyed some of the asparagus last night for dinner and I swear, it's worth driving back into town to buy more! Something tells me that the new potatoes that I purchased on Saturday will be just as good with tonight's dinner. Might be another reason for me to drive into town cause there'll be plenty of them available on Tuesday too. Well, heck I might just as well plan on going to town on Tuesday to see my farmer friends because I missed out on the broccoli Saturday and I was assured that there will some on Tuesday. Probably ought to buy more sugar snap peas too because I haven't quite filled my freezer so that I can enjoy them all winter long. Oh, darn...I forgot about the wonderful strawberries and rhubarb! Sounds like I might be baking a pie when I get home. Now I know I'll be heading towards Lexington on Tuesday afternoon.

As you can see, there is still plenty of good stuff available at the Tuesday market. It runs from 3 until 6:30  and is located at 3450 Richmond Rd.  in the parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet.  That's next to the Glenn Auto Mall just outside Man O'War.

This bit of good news just in...there will be heirloom tomato plants available too! And, maybe snow peas!

100% local and Kentucky Proud...that's us!
