Celebrate Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Happy Independence Day America! Just a little trivia for you history buffs...did you know that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which just happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Declaration! Although James Monroe was not a Declaration signer, he was the third President in a row who died on July fourth in 1831! And, Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872 and is the only President to be born on Independence Day!

Well, summer goodness has arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market just in time for the 4th of July celebrations! Corn, green beans, tomatoes, squash, peppers and cantaloupes all scream summer and we've got them all plus so much more. Of course, the best part is knowing that they are indeed locally grown by one of our farmer members. Homegrown goodness at its finest! :)

We're not just a fruit and vegetable market...we have producers who bring farm fresh eggs, GMO and ASH and nitrate free meats too! Don't forget the wonderful homemade jams...both fruit sweet and pepper spicy! And, how can you pass up home baked breads and sweet treats! Local award winning wines, fantastic cheese spreads, hand blended dried herb seasoning and hand crafted soaps are available too! Heck, we even have one of a kind flowers made out of Duct tape! Granted they don't smell nearly as nice as the flowers that you see at the market, but they sure are cute!

Let's just say that a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a true local experience and one that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. :) Besides, free and convenient parking is always available. We're pet friendly and stroller and wheelchair accessible too. Yup, you'll be smiling almost as much as our friendly and knowledgeable farmers!

Corn and Tomatoes at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's official, summer is really here! That means we can all start looking forward to wonderful locally homegrown corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers and even some early tomatoes! Yup, you'll be able to find all of these goodies this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Yes, you read it correctly...corn is in. :) We've had customers asking for corn since the market opened the 2014 market season. We had to explain that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a 100% homegrown/produced market and sorry, it just wasn't in season in Kentucky until last week. Homegrown can mean that “someone” grew it “somewhere!” lol Not at our market...we grow what we sell! That means that our customers are guaranteed really local products and we like it that way.

Corn isn't the only summer goodie that will be available...green beans are in too. So are those wonderful for grilling zucchini and yellow squash. The vine ripe tomatoes are still a bit scarce but we will have some. Besides, now is the time to take advantage of those wonderful fried green maters. I don't know about anyone else but the first bite of that crisp cucumber means summer has arrived for me. The lettuce season is slowing down so grab some and have a fresh salad. And, if you've been eating grocery store potatoes all winter...wait until you taste a farm fresh one. The same goes for the flavor of a head of honest to gosh homegrown cabbage. Life is good at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! :)

You've noticed that we say we are a 100% homegrown/produced market. That means that not everything is “grown!” Some items are raised, baked or made by our farmers. Full of flavor meats of all varieties and cuts are raised by our farmers. Home baked goodies like zucchini breads come from our ovens. Home crafted soaps, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsas, etc. are all made by our members. We'll give credit to the hens for laying the eggs! Lol

Now that you know that your purchases are really supporting a local farmer, how about a list of what you will find this Saturday. Remember that this list is always subject to change and chances are you'll find much more at each market.

Summer Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's here...the official start to summer! The solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere on June 21 at 6:51 A.M. EDT. Which means 249 minutes later the Bluegrass Farmers Market will open its summer season! :) Wish we could say that we will have fresh corn, vine ripened melons and red ripe tomatoes available but unfortunately Mother Nature has not cooperated this year. Being a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market does have its disadvantages to go along with all of the great part of knowing that you are purchasing from the actual farmer who is a part of a market that actually grew that fruit or vegetable!

So, let's all celebrate summer by shopping at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Both of our locations have nothing but homegrown/produced goodness and we guarantee it! Every member farm is inspected to make sure that they are not bringing any “auction” or “produce terminal” items to our market. We do not allow any “resellers!” Okay, occasionally you might might find one of our members selling for another member simply because there has been an emergency, special event in their life or the cost of driving to Lexington just doesn't warrant them being there for lack of product offering...think harsh Kentucky spring cold weather and the lack of asparagus. We still do not want our customers to miss out on their offerings so be on the lookout for their items to be at a different booth...maybe! :) You'll see a sign to let you know that this farmer is selling for another member farmer and we still guarantee that it is homegrown and has met all of our rules and regulations!

Here's a bit of what you'll find at each market this Saturday...

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will be offering a special this Saturday! Breakfast sausage is only $4.50/ pound and their " Kobe" beef patties are specially priced at $5.50/ pound. Don't forget their farm fresh eggs and nitrate free bacon!

HUTCHERSON FAMILY FARM PRODUCE will be bringing their homegrown goodness from Franklin County. Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Wow, it looks like the warm weather has sure helped our farmers crops! No, there is no corn...yet! Remember that we are a 100% homegrown farmers market and our local corn just isn't ready. But, there are so many other options available! Try something new...you might just discover a new family favorite. And, please do not be afraid to ask the farmer how to use something new to you.. They grew it, they know how to prepare it!

I will give everyone a bit of advise...if you are looking for a particular fruit or vegetable, shop early! Our farmers bring only what they have harvested from their gardens, hoop houses and fields so you won't find loaded crates from the produce auction houses as back up. Once an item is gone for the day...it is gonna be another week before you can purchase homegrown goodness! Speaking of which, remember that seasonal items like strawberries freeze beautifully with very little effort. In other words..get them while you can because it'll be a long winter! Lol Can't believe that I even mentioned cold weather other than I know how much we enjoyed our market bounty all winter long and I sure was glad that I took the time to freeze and can the spring goodies.

So, what will be available this week at our two market locations? Here's a list and who knows what else might show up in the back of a farmers truck...

Give Thanks Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Monday is a day of remembrance but not one where we grieve...but a day to celebrate the lives of those brave men and women who gave theirs so that we can enjoy our freedom! I can't think of a better way to honor them then to be with family and friends. Show your spirit and have a red, white and blue day and wave your flags proudly! Bust out the grills and feed the whole bunch grilled veggies, burgers, chops, hot dogs, etc. and don't forget the farm fresh strawberries and a nice bottle of wine for dessert!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be celebrating Memorial Day in a big way! At least in a red way...strawberries are in! Ya just can't celebrate Memorial Day without strawberries! Lol

Here's a bit of what you'll find at each market this Saturday...

RICHMOND RD.

On Tapp Dairy will be bringing plenty of meats to grill...think Chorizo, Italian brats, pork brats, pork chops or maybe a steak! All of their hogs are fed NON-GMO feed and raw milk from grass fed cows! Don't forget the farm fresh eggs!

Grimes Mill Winery will have their award winning Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Bianca wines plus many more...and you can even sample them! :) They are very proud of their silver and gold medals at the Indianapolis International Wine Competition and we don't blame them!

Jane's Garden, Flowers & Herbs will have Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, organically grown Beefsteak tomato plants and her always beautiful cut flower bouquets to brighten up your picnic table!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will have their wonderful pepper jams, bean soup mix and loads of great baked goods...think chocolate zucchini cake for dessert! If you are looking for something new to add to your Memorial Day meal, how about some Asian greens! Don't forget the Sugar Ann peas...crunchy and delicious! Arugula and lettuce would be the perfect side dish to that grilled steak!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their wonderful soaps made with locally brewed beer!

JP Foods will have their fantastic pimento cheese blends...try the Bourbon Smoked Pimento Cheese Spread! It's great on a grilled burger!

Tomatoes, Etc. will be bringing their heirloom tomato plants and even some herb plants like chives and parsley!

Herb'n Renewal will be celebrating in a big way...these folks love holidays! They'll be bringing their hand blended herb seasonings...something for everything that you grill be it beef, pork, chicken, ribs or veggies! And, the celebration continues with free sun visors for the kids! Yup, they will be giving away a limited supply of brightly colored visors to the little shoppers at the market...heck, you might even get your name on one! Don't forget the delicious Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

Caludi's Fields will be making their first appearance at the 2104 market this Saturday! Look for their wonderful strawberries but not until around 10AM because they harvest early that morning! Something tells me that you'll find fruit jams too!

Sweetgrass Granola will also be making their first appearance at our Richmond Rd. market! Look for all natural, homemade granola in a variety of flavors!

Kelly's Kobe Beef & Herman's Happy Hogs will continue their Memorial Day sale by offering their 100% Kobe beef patties for $5.50 a pound! They'll also be bringing all sorts of pork cuts including nitrate free bacon! And, farm fresh eggs too!

Overman's BG Fruit & Vegetables will be loaded down with a variety of lettuce including Bibb, Salad Bowl, Black Seeded Simpson and even some arugula!

Sheltowee Farm will also be making their first appearance at the Richmond Rd. market this Saturday...look for fantastic mushrooms!

Hutcherson Family Farm Produce is another newbie to our market! Look for strawberries, kale, broccoli, lettuce, onions, radishes, turnips, butternut squash and even some kohlrabi! If you are unfamiliar with kohlrabi, they were nice enough to share a link to give you some information and recipes. :) http:www.uvm.edu/extension/food/pdfs/local-food/kohlrabi.pdf They will also be bringing plants and if you have any special requests or want to place a bulk order, give them a call at (502) 682-9431!

AZUR

On Tapp Dairy will be bringing plenty of meats to grill...think Chorizo, Italian brats, pork brats, pork chops or maybe a steak! All of their hogs are fed NON-GMO feed and raw milk from grass fed cows! Don't forget the farm fresh eggs!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their wonderful soaps made with locally brewed beer!

Sheltowee Farm will be back with their wonderful mushrooms!

Emnett Acres will have tomato and basil sets, canna lily roots as well as
leaf lettuce, kale, turnip greens and green onions!

Clark Farm will be bringing farm fresh asparagus, chard, kale, collards, broccoli, Bibb lettuce, spring lettuce, spinach, poke sallet, yellow squash, zucchini and even some dried gourd projects!

And, who knows what other surprises you might find at either market! :)

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market Second Location!

Another great weekend to celebrate twice!

Sunday is the day to give thanks to that wonderful woman who brought each and every one of us into this world...it's Mother's Day! Maybe you can surprise her by preparing a delicious Kobe or certified organic steak, a roasted free range chicken, a thick juicy pork chop or some wonderful lamb. Pair any of these items with a farm fresh side salad or some sauteed Asian greens. Don't forget the hand blended herb seasoning to enhance all of your dishes. You'll be able to find home baked goodies so that your dessert will be covered too. And, the table needs a centerpiece of fresh picked flowers. Mom deserves to be pampered with nothing but the best and our farmers and producers can guarantee all items are grown, raised, baked or made on their local farms!

Now for the second celebration...our newest market location at Azur Restaurant & Patio in Beaumont Centre opens on Saturday! We are pleased to partner with such a well known local chef who appreciates local foods, Jeremy Ashby! We're looking forward to a great working relationship with Chef Ashby and his staff.

Here's a bit of what you'll be able to find at each of our market locations on Saturday...and, you'll notice that a few farmers will be at both markets!

Richmond Road

Overman's BG Fruit & Vegetables will be bringing a variety of different lettuce including Black Seeded Simpson, Salad Bowl and Bibb...along with arugula!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will have lettuce blends, arugula and Asian greens including Mizuna, Komatsuma and Shungi Ku. Look for wonderful home baked goods, Concord and Niagara Grape jams, pepper jams and even some dried bean soup mix! A limited supply of Sugar Ann peas and asparagus will also be available!

Stone Burr Farm will be bringing their delicious lamb...all cuts!

Tomatoes, Etc, Roger Postley, will be bringing his heirloom tomato and pepper plants! He'll even have some eggplant transplants! Chive plants, a must have for any garden...think baked potatoes! If you are looking for an unusual plant...try the Egyptian Walking Onion sets that he'll be bringing too! He'll also be bringing his “gift for kids” tomorrow...wonderful Red Robin cherry tomato plants and the great part is, they come with instructions for parents!

Herb'n Renewal will be loaded down with their hand blended herb seasoning, handcrafted glycerin soaps, catnip for the kitties and lavender sachets. Don't forget the Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies! And, make sure you stop by and get a treat for your four-legged friend. Remember that their dried herb seasoning does not do well in wet weather so if it is raining you might not see them. But if you were one of the lucky Derby winners, hang on to your ticket, it's good at any market day!

Kelly's Kobe Beef, a new farmer this year, will be bringing their farm fresh free range eggs, hormone and antibiotic free Kobe beef, all sorts of pork cuts and even no nitrate bacon!

On Tapp Dairy will have plenty of pork, Certified Organic beef, chicken, veal cuts and even hot dogs...all raised on non-GMO feed and antibiotic and hormone free! And, farm fresh free range eggs too!

Jane's Garden, Flowers & Herbs will be loaded down with fresh cut flowers...think mom! She'll also be bringing a very limited supply of lettuce and basil. She'll only be at the market until noon, so shop early!

Azur Restaurant & Patio

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their local brew beer soap and local goat's milk soap!

On Tapp Dairy will have plenty of pork, Certified Organic beef, chicken, veal cuts and even hot dogs...all raised on non-GMO feed and antibiotic and hormone free! And, farm fresh free range eggs too!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will have lettuce blends, arugula and Asian greens including Mizuna, Komatsuma and Shungi Ku. Sweetgrass Granola, another new market member this year, will have four flavors of granola: Kentucky Harvest, Cherry Home Companion, Cinnamon Kane, and Germantown Chocolate.

Folks, we have some great times in the Bluegrass coming up! First off, the biggie of the year...the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 3rd. I don't care what you say, if you live in the Commonwealth, it is a special day. Kinda like making it to the Final Four with hooves instead of a basketball! The eyes of the world are on Kentucky for at least one special day every year and we shine! :)

Once we get past that Derby fever, it's gonna be time to celebrate something else...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be opening their second location on May 10th! Yup, not only will you be able to shop at our original location at 3450 Richmond Rd in the parking lot of Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs...you'll now be able to visit us at AZUR Restaurant & Patio at 3070 Lakecrest Circle in Beaumont Centre!

We're excited about our partnership with AZUR and hope you all make our farmers feel welcome once we start selling our market goodness! . So mark your calendars...May 10th is the day! Until then, you can find those same wonderful 100% homegrown/produced goodies at our Richmond Rd. location.

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It looks like Mother Nature will be shining down on us this Saturday! :) Perfect weather for a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Our farmers have been struggling with the cold temperatures, so many of the usual spring offerings are going to be a bit late this year. That's the price you pay to have a 100% homegrown/produced market. Take my word for it...they want to be at the market as much as our customers want to see them. Each week we are seeing more and this Saturday you'll even find a new to the market veggie. The folks at McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing some Komatsuna, a form of Japanese mustard greens. Curiosity got the best of me and I did some research for recipes...it sounds wonderful and very versatile so check it out. This would be a perfect time to try something new and exciting while you wait for the “normal” spring greens to arrive...who knows, you might find a new favorite!

Here's just a bit of what you'll find on Saturday and please remember that we are growing each week as Mother Nature allows!

Stone Burr Farm will be bringing their delicious lamb!!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their local brew beer soap and local goat's milk soap!

Roger Postley of Tomatoes, Etc will have some Purple Ruffle Basil plants and maybe some other herb plants like Chives, Cutting Celery (a must have for any herb garden) and Parsley. If you are looking for an unusual plant...try the Egyptian Walking Onion sets that he'll be bringing too! Roger will also be taking orders for his heirloom pepper and tomato plants!

Cripple Creek Farm, new to our market this year, will be bringing jams, jellies, homemade strawberry and cherry pie fillings, gluten and grain free breads, garlic and herb breadsticks, Amish white, sourdough, banana nut and zucchini breads too! They sold out of their spring asparagus quickly last week but they have promised to bring more! And maybe even some lettuce!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing hot pepper, spiced tomato, hot spiced tomato jams, Concord grape and Niagara grape jelly. Dried tomatoes and okra. The wonderful dried bean soup mix is back! And for that sweet tooth, look for chocolate zucchini cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin pecan cookies! As mentioned, the Komatsuna, Mizuna, Red Russian kale. We'll also have a limited supply of green onions and arugula!

Kelly's Kobe Beef, another new farmer this year, will be bringing their farm fresh eggs, Kobe beef and all sorts of pork cuts!

On Tapp Dairy will have plenty of pork, beef, chicken and veal cuts! And, farm fresh eggs too!

And, who knows what other surprises you might find! :)

Make sure you stop by and welcome our new members...they'd love to meet you. :)

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Opens Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the big day. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be opening for the 2014 market season on Saturday! Sounds like Mother Nature is going to give us some beautiful weather too! We'd love to get a chance to say hi to our customers...new and returning, so stop by and visit with us. We really have missed everyone this winter.

As promised, here is a list of the farmers and producers that have taken time out of their busy schedule to email me with what they will be bringing to the market tomorrow. The list seems a bit short but I can almost guarantee that there will be more smiling faces that show up. As you all know, the weather has not really cooperated so some farmers, like Botanica, Jane's Flowers and Herbs and Reece Garden, let me know that their goodness might take a few weeks. But, they will be back! That's the price you pay when you are a 100% homegrown/producer market...no corn in April!

These folks will definitely be at the market...

Stone Burr Farm will be bringing lamb for you Easter dinner!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their local brew beer soap and local goat's milk soap!

Roger Postley of Tomatoes, Etc will have some Purple Ruffle Basil plants and maybe some other herb plants. He'll be taking orders for his heirloom pepper and tomato plants too!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing hot pepper, spiced tomato, hot spiced tomato, Concord grape and Niagara grape jelly. And they also hope to have chocolate zucchini cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin cookies and some dried products!

And, who knows what other surprises you might find! :)
