Bluegrass Farmers Market

  (Lexington, Kentucky)
Nothing but 100% Homegrown or Produced at our market!
[ Member listing ]

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The question of the day...should I shop at the grocery store or the farmers market? Actually, they both serve many of our needs and you need to shop at both of them because they each provide the necessities of life. I have to say that I can't remember the last time that I saw toilet paper at a farmers market! Okay, as history tells us, maybe a corn cob might have sufficed in the old days, but not now! Thank heavens for all of us! :)

Yes, grocery stores have many items that we need in our everyday life but do they have the “good for you” things like fruits and vegetables? Sure they do, but do you really know what that “homegrown” sign next to that zucchini, corn, tomatoes, mean? Heck, it could be grown in Minnesota, California, Florida, etc. for all that you know..it's home to someone! That's the reason that you should shop at your local farmers market! And, to even complicate things more...it should be a guaranteed honest to gosh homegrown farmers market like the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Knowing that you are buying nothing but the best from a farmer who actually grew the item is well worth the trip to our market!

The great part is shopping at our market vs. the grocery store doesn't stop in the fruit and veggie aisle! You'll find home baked goods, cheese spreads, herb seasoning, jams, salsa, home crafted soaps, fresh cut flowers, local honey, farm fresh eggs, meats, etc. Yup, we have just about everything but the toilet paper!

That brings us to what you'll find at our markets this week...nothing but homegrown or produced goodness at its best! We grow, raise, bake, make what we sell! Except for the farm fresh eggs...the hens do that for us but we do care for them on our farms!

RICHMOND RD.

R FAMILY FARM will be bringing their organically grown German Johnson and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, along with Chocolate, Gold Nugget and Washington cherry tomatoes! Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I did my usual Saturday morning walk through the Richmond Rd. market and I was so pleased with the variety and quality of the items that our farmers brought to the market. I have been told that the Azur Restaurant & Patio location looked just as good! I'll say it again...summer has finally arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and everyone couldn't be happier! Our farmers are thrilled to see that folks really appreciate the fact that they only bring what they grow, raise, bake or produce to the market. It makes all of their hard work worthwhile knowing that you, our customers, are enjoying the rewards!

Just have to pass on a comment that I received this past Saturday from a first time customer. She told me that it was well worth the drive to our market, even though it was in the country, to buy tomatoes and corn that she knew were homegrown. I had to giggle because while both of our market locations are not located in downtown Lexington, our farmers do not think of us as being in the “country!” I guess after some farmers drive well over an hour to get to the market, they kinda feel like they are coming to the “city!” lol The Richmond Rd. market location is less than a quarter of a mile outside of Man O' War and the Azur market is just outside of New Circle and I promise that you do not have to pack a picnic lunch in order to visit either one them! Besides, parking is always free and much easier than trying to find a spot downtown to park!

So, what will you be able to find at both Bluegrass Farmers' Market locations tomorrow? Here's a list of what our members have told me that they will have available...

RICHMOND RD.

JANE'S GARDENS, FLOWERS & HERBS will be back this Saturday with her beautiful cut flowers...think colorful zinnias! She'll also have plenty of fresh cut basil by the stem or in bunches...think pesto!

JP FOODS will be bringing their wonderful pimento cheese spreads including their Traditional spread and the Bourbon Smoked Pepper spreads. Folks, do not let the word “pepper” throw you off if you are a wimp like me...it is not spicy hot, just wonderful! Make sure you get a sample and you'll see what I mean!

CALUDI'S FIELDS will be bringing their fantastic blueberries, tomatoes and green beans tomorrow...grown right here in Fayette County! Don't forget the great homemade fruit jams...sugar free available too!

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will be arriving from Garrard County with some special sales! Look for ASH FREE(antibiotic, steroid, hormone) “Wagyu” Kobe beef and pork products! Specials include ground Kobe beef in 1 pound rolls...$5.00! Kobe beef patties...$5.25 a pound and pork breakfast patties at $4.00 a pound! Bust out the grills! Don't forget the eggs!

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Before I even begin to tell everyone what wonderful 100% homegrown or produced items will be available this week at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, I want to address and hopefully answer some questions that shoppers had this past Saturday.

We had a few customers who questioned the fact that we are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market because they saw farmers unloading their crops from produce boxes like the type used at a grocery store. First off, we can guarantee that every member has had his or her farm inspected to make sure that they do indeed grow what they sell! Secondly, every farmer that sells any produce has been through GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training...we insist on it before you can become a member! Now, on to the use of boxes/crates...that's how we bring our items to the market! You can't just throw tomatoes into the bed of a truck! The boxes/crates that our farmers use are clean and that assures that our customers do not get contaminated produce. The farmers buy those boxes for their specific fruit or vegetable, they are factory labeled and they are not cheap! Our farmers are proud of what they grow and they want to make sure that nothing but the best goes home with each and every customer!

That brings me to the next comments that we heard. How come all of the tomatoes look perfect? The onions were so clean! The green beans looked perfect! There's no way all of these can be homegrown!!! Oh, yes they can and they are! Our farmers take the time to peel a layer of dirty skin off of that onion. They take the time to “polish” their tomatoes so that you won't find any dirt on them,...think rain and the soil splashing up on them! When our farmers harvest their green beans, they'll toss any that they consider not perfect! If you have ever had any doubts about the honest to gosh homegrown goodness at our market, talk to the farmer...ask them what variety of tomato, green bean, squash, etc. that is. I'll guarantee that you'll get a long winded answer! lol You know why? Because they actually grew that item! They researched the different varieties to find out what does best in our climate and soil! Try doing that at your local grocery store! Are our prices a wee bit higher? Yes they may be, but think about the cost of farming...seeds cost money, gas for equipment is not cheap, hours spent in the hot sun harvesting and then the cost of bringing it to the market so we can guarantee that our customers get nothing but locally grown and always the best! Makes me wonder why we do it? That's easy to answer...we love seeing the smiling faces on our customers and knowing that they are taking a sack full of homegrown goodness back to their family!

So, the next time you see a box or crate being unloaded from one of our farmers trucks...remember that you are supporting a farmer and his or her family and you are getting 100% homegrown...guaranteed!

Okay, I hope those questions have been answered and now on to the business at hand...the goodies that will be available this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Markets!

Summer goodness is in full swing! Tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, melons, berries, etc.! What more can you ask for? How about baked goods, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsa, cheese spreads, wine, meats, eggs, relishes, fresh cut flowers and even home crafted soaps! We've got it all! :)

Celebrate Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Happy Independence Day America! Just a little trivia for you history buffs...did you know that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which just happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Declaration! Although James Monroe was not a Declaration signer, he was the third President in a row who died on July fourth in 1831! And, Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872 and is the only President to be born on Independence Day!

Well, summer goodness has arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market just in time for the 4th of July celebrations! Corn, green beans, tomatoes, squash, peppers and cantaloupes all scream summer and we've got them all plus so much more. Of course, the best part is knowing that they are indeed locally grown by one of our farmer members. Homegrown goodness at its finest! :)

We're not just a fruit and vegetable market...we have producers who bring farm fresh eggs, GMO and ASH and nitrate free meats too! Don't forget the wonderful homemade jams...both fruit sweet and pepper spicy! And, how can you pass up home baked breads and sweet treats! Local award winning wines, fantastic cheese spreads, hand blended dried herb seasoning and hand crafted soaps are available too! Heck, we even have one of a kind flowers made out of Duct tape! Granted they don't smell nearly as nice as the flowers that you see at the market, but they sure are cute!

Let's just say that a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a true local experience and one that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. :) Besides, free and convenient parking is always available. Corn and Tomatoes at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's official, summer is really here! That means we can all start looking forward to wonderful locally homegrown corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers and even some early tomatoes! Yup, you'll be able to find all of these goodies this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Yes, you read it correctly...corn is in. :) We've had customers asking for corn since the market opened the 2014 market season. We had to explain that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a 100% homegrown/produced market and sorry, it just wasn't in season in Kentucky until last week. Homegrown can mean that “someone” grew it “somewhere!” lol Not at our market...we grow what we sell! That means that our customers are guaranteed really local products and we like it that way.

Corn isn't the only summer goodie that will be available...green beans are in too. So are those wonderful for grilling zucchini and yellow squash. The vine ripe tomatoes are still a bit scarce but we will have some. Besides, now is the time to take advantage of those wonderful fried green maters. I don't know about anyone else but the first bite of that crisp cucumber means summer has arrived for me. The lettuce season is slowing down so grab some and have a fresh salad. And, if you've been eating grocery store potatoes all winter...wait until you taste a farm fresh one. The same goes for the flavor of a head of honest to gosh homegrown cabbage. Life is good at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! :)

You've noticed that we say we are a 100% homegrown/produced market. That means that not everything is “grown!” Some items are raised, baked or made by our farmers. Full of flavor meats of all varieties and cuts are raised by our farmers. Home baked goodies like zucchini breads come from our ovens. Home crafted soaps, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsas, etc. are all made by our members. We'll give credit to the hens for laying the eggs! Lol

Now that you know that your purchases are really supporting a local farmer, how about a list of what you will find this Saturday. Remember that this list is always subject to change and chances are you'll find much more at each market.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Opens Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the big day. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be opening for the 2014 market season on Saturday! Sounds like Mother Nature is going to give us some beautiful weather too! We'd love to get a chance to say hi to our customers...new and returning, so stop by and visit with us. We really have missed everyone this winter.

As promised, here is a list of the farmers and producers that have taken time out of their busy schedule to email me with what they will be bringing to the market tomorrow. The list seems a bit short but I can almost guarantee that there will be more smiling faces that show up. As you all know, the weather has not really cooperated so some farmers, like Botanica, Jane's Flowers and Herbs and Reece Garden, let me know that their goodness might take a few weeks. But, they will be back! That's the price you pay when you are a 100% homegrown/producer market...no corn in April!

These folks will definitely be at the market...

Stone Burr Farm will be bringing lamb for you Easter dinner!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their local brew beer soap and local goat's milk soap!

Roger Postley of Tomatoes, Etc will have some Purple Ruffle Basil plants and maybe some other herb plants. He'll be taking orders for his heirloom pepper and tomato plants too!

Herb'n Renewal will be loaded down with their hand blended herb seasoning, handcrafted glycerin soaps, catnip for the kitties and lavender sachets. Don't forget the Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

Cripple Creek Farm, new to our market this year, will be bringing jams, jellies, homemade strawberry and cherry pie fillings, farm fresh eggs and gluten free bread!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing hot pepper, spiced tomato, hot spiced tomato, Concord grape and Niagara grape jelly. And they also hope to have chocolate zucchini cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin cookies and some dried products!

And, who knows what other surprises you might find! :)

**********

By the way, Roger and Clay, the Two Troubadours will be on hand to entertain us all with their great music!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market Opens in 24 days!

And, the countdown is really starting to get exciting! We'll be open and ready to go in only 24 days! That's right, April 12th is only 24 days away. Okay, I wish you could see my smile..more like a grin from ear to ear. :D It's been a very looooooooooong winter for most of us so the opening of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be quite a welcome change.

I have always been told that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day, even though I am a proud Swede! lol And yes, we do the traditional corned beef, taters, cabbage and carrots. Of course, that means leftovers in the fridge. A Reuben sandwich is wonderful but what about those leftover veggies! Here's a favorite recipe that my mom shared with me many years ago...it's still a favorite!

Colcannon Mom's Way

This is a great way to clean out the fridge the day after “the wear'in of the green!” It is very forgiving so no need to follow any instructions, just mush it all together. :)

Leftover mashed potatoes

Leftover carrots, chopped small

Leftover cabbage, chopped small

1 small onion, chopped small

1/4 cup butter, softened

Enough milk to just hold it all together

Season to taste with salt and pepper

Heat in a pot or skillet, stirring frequently, until warmed. You can also put this into a shallow casserole dish, shred some Cheddar cheese on top and bake in a 325 oven until bubbly.

Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Let's talk about a green veggie that is full of vitamins and a bunch of other goodies too...Kale!!! Okay, you walk up to a booth at your local farmers market and see this green, leafy stuff that kinda looks like spinach or dark green lettuce but not really. You might have heard about it on one of the cooking shows. But, have you ever tasted kale? Let me tell you...it is wonderful!!! It's a great source of vitamin A, C and K! Very impressive amounts of calcium, fiber and antioxidants! In other words, it's wonderful for you and great tasting too! :)

So, how do you get it into your diet?

One of our market customers said that she went home with a bag of baby kale and had all good intentions of steaming it...sorry, she ate it raw like candy! Lol We took our bag of kale home and steamed it and then sprinkled it with some Herbn' Renewal Good'n Garlicky. One customer shared her experience with frying it! Who knew that you could make a crispy, good for you green veggie taste so great!

Here are a few suggestions for using the fresh from our farms kale...

Wash, pat dry and enjoy like candy...per one of our customers! lol

Saute' in a skillet with a bit of butter or oil of your choice.

Try tossing it into your favorite soup...it doesn't matter what kind, chicken , beef, etc. it works!

Got lettuce for a salad? Add some kale for more flavor and texture!

Steam and then toss with some oil or butter and herb seasoning.

How about a skillet toss, as we call it! Chop up some sausage...lamb, beef, pork or goat..they all work great! Add some onions, peppers and some kale...a little salt and pepper and you have a wonderful compliment to rice or potatoes!

Don't forget the good old southern “pot likker!” Just simmer a ham hock (or some country ham or bacon) in a kettle with enough water to just cook it down...we use a bit of diced onion in ours. It shouldn't need anything else except for a bit of vinegar once the deliciousness is in the bowl! Northerners might need some salt and pepper! Lol Oh, don't forget a big hunk of cornbread to sop up the juices!!!! Okay, I am off to the kitchen because I am drooling.

2013 Bluegrass Farmers' Market

Now Open on Saturday 9 – 2

3450 Richmond Rd.

Market Musings!

I thought long and hard about what to write this week and I have to admit that my brain wandered into some very nice places. I found myself smiling, almost grinning, quite a bit. The reason was mostly the farmers who make up the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. I walk through the market each week and ask each and every farmer if they will be at the next market, what they will be bringing and do they have anything new, so that I can pass it on to our customers in this blog. It's pretty much routine stuff and when you are a 100% homegrown market, the offerings don't really change much because we all live in Kentucky and we all grow basically the same thing...or so I thought! Boy oh boy, was I pleasantly surprised this past Saturday!!!

As I continue to smile while I am typing this, I look back at the various tables loaded with farm fresh goodness and the faces on the folks who grew that stuff. Yes, the faces looked a bit tired...but, heck most had been up before dawn harvesting or else they were picking in the dark the night before...they had every right to be tired! That's what it takes to be a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...hard work, long hours and the ability to still smile on market day! :)

The next thought that made me smile from ear to ear was the fact that I saw more than the usual corn, tomatoes, green beans, peppers, squash, zucchini, etc. You know what I am talking about...the same old stuff no matter how great it tastes, it gets boring. We all need a change in our diet and I'll be darned if our farmers didn't bring it to the market this Saturday! WOW, greasy beans, edamame, leeks, shallots...to name just a few things. I was just really appreciative of our farmers who went above and beyond to grow something a wee bit different for our small market. I know that you'd expect to find things like this at large city markets...we're a small, young market with farmers who rely on their crops to survive and yet they took chances on something new. I mean, how great is that!!! I hope you understand my grins by now. :)

But, I am not going to stop there because the smiles and the pride in belonging to such a great farmers market gets even better. I'm sure every state holds a state fair. But, if you have never participated in one, you'll never know just how competitive they can be. As a plain old fair visitor, I just walk through the agricultural aisles with my jaw darn near on the floor. I wonder...how the heck did they grow that perfectly straight green bean. Wow, what a perfectly round and red tomato. Geez look at that adorable white pumpkin. And wish I could dip my finger into the golden honey! I know that if you have ever been to a state fair, you know exactly what I am talking about. There are all sorts of ribbons next to the winners...by the way, I consider everyone who makes it to the state fair a winner, but only a few make it to the top! So, I am sticking my chest out for the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and reporting that we had two big winners at the Kentucky State Fair this year!

Drum roll.....

HONEY DEW APIARY and owner, Keith Green was the Sweepstake winner in the Honey category...he won it all! Congratulations Keith! :)

OVERMAN'S BLUEGRASS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES won the Grand Champion White Halloween Pumpkin award along with many others. Cute/funny story that our farmers enjoyed...Kirby (husband) is the one we see selling at the market. Babette (wife) is the one who stays home and takes care of the farm stuff. To be fair...they both work the farm. When it came time to deliver the entries for the state fair, they arrived with a truck full of great stuff. Kirby took care of his entries and Babette took care of hers. There was still a few pumpkins left and being the gentleman (and hubby) that he is, Kirby let Babette pick first...she choose the winner! We all had a good laugh and chances are, Kirby will be hearing about his “loss” for quite some time.

That's what I mean when I talk about the smiles that the farmers at this market bring to my face. They are real folks, they work hard, they farm, they grow, they raise, they bake, they blend and they are constantly trying something new to make the Bluegrass Farmers' Market a great place to shop.

Thank you farmers and friends for my smiles...it keeps me wanting to be part of such a great community organization.

****************************************************

I have to share a little story with you all. I received a phone call earlier this week from a farmer who was interested in selling his produce at a farmers market in Lexington. His first question almost set me back a bit, but I did not hesitate as I answered it...honestly! He asked me why I sold my goods at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and not at the other market. I first explained that Lexington had more than two market associations selling at various locations throughout the area. I was not familiar with the two newest markets so I couldn't comment on those. I was very familiar with the largest market in Lexington, The Lexington Farmers Market, and I went on to explain that I had sold there for almost 11 years. The difference between them and the one that I now belong to, The Bluegrass Farmers' Market, is that this market is 100% homegrown or produced and they guarantee it! I am serious...they inspect all farms before allowing anyone to join. They make sure that each member is GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) trained and each member has to be a certified Kentucky Proud member. In other words, they are truly what I would call a farmers market. I had just started to spout the good things about the other market when he interrupted me and said he had heard enough to warrant filling out an application for our market. :) It always makes me feel good when I know that I made the right decision in moving to a smaller but 100% homegrown market! But, please do not get me wrong...the other market has plenty to offer too! I just prefer knowing that I am buying from the folks who actually grew, raised, baked or produced what they were selling.

Not sure why I had to share that experience except that I guess I appreciate the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and its dedication to really local products as much as I appreciate the folks who understand that and after all...it is

Customer Appreciation Day!!!

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Now Open on Tuesday Too!

Yup, that's right...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is now open on Tuesday too! Hopefully Mother Nature will be a bit kinder than she was last Saturday. Our loyal farmers showed up in the pouring rain and so did our great customers. Thank you so much for your continued support even though many of you had to walk through “Lake Bluegrass” to reach us! If it ever happens again we can promise that there will be market ducks swimming in the lake just so we can all smile a little bit.

Okay, now for what you'll be able to find at the opening of the Tuesday market, it's going to be a plant lovers dream come true!

Tomato guy, Roger will be there was an assortment of heirloom tomato plants, Alpine strawberry plants, pepper plants and even some herb plants!

Ed, the banana tree fellow, will be bringing quite a mix of plants including...daylilies, hot pepper, canning tomato, various veggies, tropicals including giant elephant ears and of course...a few banana trees!

Our newest market member, Jonathon, is coming all the way from Maysville loaded down with hanging flower baskets, bedding plants, ferns, Wave petunias, mixed planters and tomato plants in containers and even hanging baskets for those of you who don't have a yard to plant in!

Like I said...it's gonna be the place for plant lovers to be on Tuesday! The great part is, they are all locally grown by our members so you can ask all sorts of questions about the planting and care of your purchase. They grew them so they know their plants!!!

Hope to see everyone at the opening of our Tuesday market! The hours are 3:00 until 6:30 and as always we will be set up in the beautiful tree lined parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet next to the Glenn Auto Mall on Richmond Road just outside Man O War! Parking is always free and very convenient!

Weekday Market Doings!

I was sitting here this morning trying to think of a way to let folks know just how wonderful the Bluegrass Farmers' Market really is and I decided that I'd probably just tell you what went home with me at the end of Saturday's market. I can tell you, it was quite a haul of fresh veggies and berries!

We enjoyed the most delicious fresh corn on the cob last night along with our wonderful ASH free beef burgers that were topped with fabulous tomatoes! Our plates looked more like serving platters by the time we added the crisp sliced cucumber and onion salad along with the extra heirloom tomatoes that we just had to try. By the way, the German Stripey's and Japanese something...sorry, I cannot remember the name of them...tomatoes were great! Heck, I'm not done yet. My hubby roasted some fingerling potatoes on the grill and Oh My Gosh, we're they ever good! He rubbed them with a bit of bacon drippings and then sprinkled them with coarse sea salt. Talk about heaven! You'd have thought that we would have been stuffed by the end of the meal but we managed to save room for a slice of fantastic jam cake that was drizzled with a decadent raspberry sauce that I made with those wonderful berries and local honey! I have to admit that the two of us could hardly move after dinner but, the funny part was, we were both thinking about the next meal! Lol Yup, there's still some wonderful greens beans, eggplant, zucchini and squash waiting for our next meal.

Geez, forgot to let you know that we started the day out with a huge breakfast of farm fresh eggs, fried taters, sliced tomatoes and homebaked bread loaded with homemade jam! Makes me wonder how we even managed to do anything yesterday. But we did get a bunch of green peppers chopped and frozen for use in chili this winter. We even froze some wonderful hot peppers so hubby could spice his up a bit more!

About the only thing I didn't come home with were flowers and plants. Believe me it wasn't because they weren't beautiful...it was because I didn't have anymore room in the van! I promised myself that I would save some space next week.

I have to tell you that it really makes you feel great to know that you can prepare and enjoy meals using nothing but locally grown goodies! And, the fresh flavor can't be beat. I'm already thinking about my farmers market list for this week!
