Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Saturday is almost upon us and that means you'll be able to get some honest to gosh 100% homegrown goodness at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! There's still plenty of summer fruits and veggies available and we're starting to see some of the later crops coming in. Remember to freeze or can or as my grandma used to say “put up” that goodness to enjoy all winter...you'll be glad that you did when the snow is falling and you're enjoying “fresh” corn and green beans. :) Don't forget, you can freeze cantaloupe and watermelons chunks too!

Both market locations are still going strong even though you might notice a few missing faces this week due to different circumstances. But, have no fear...they will be back next week.

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's that time in the bluegrass...students are back in school and the pools will soon be closed in anticipation of the cooler weather to come. For some reason many folks think that this means the farmers market will be closing soon. Both of our market locations will be open through October 25th this year!

The really great news is there is still time to enjoy all of the summer goodness that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market can offer! We still have plenty of tomatoes, corn, peppers, zucchini, green beans and melons. Now is the time to start thinking about freezing or canning that homegrown goodness so that you can enjoy it all winter long. By the way, watermelon freezes beautifully...so does cantaloupe. Think about using those wonderful chunks of fruit in place of ice cubes in your holiday punch bowl!

Geez, I am getting way ahead of myself with the cool weather stuff but I just want to remind everyone that summer fruits and vegetables are still plentiful even though a new school year usually signals fall weather. We still have a few more weeks until we'll start seeing the fall goodness arrive...think pumpkins, mums and winter squash!

So, what goodies will you be able to find this week at our markets? Here's a short list to start off with and rest assured, there will be plenty more available!

RICHMOND RD.

Kelly's Kobe Beef & Herman's Happy Hogs will be running some specials on their wonderful breakfast sausage...$3.75 for a one pound roll plus a little extra! Or maybe you want to try their 100% Wagyu “Kobe” ground beef in a one pound plus roll for $5.00 And, you can also get it in patties too...just $5.25 per pound! The hens are laying again so look for farm fresh eggs!

Valley Oak Farm will be heading in from Nancy, KY with plenty of homegrown goodness including corn, tomatoes, beans, melons, peppers, onions, potatoes, okra, zucchini ,squash and cucumbers!

JP Foods will be tempting your tastebuds with samples of their wonderful Traditional and Bourbon Smoked Pepper Pimento Cheese spreads...they will be selling take home containers too! Believe me you'll love them!

Bismarck Farm Produce will be back this week with a variety of tomatoes including Rutgers, Celebrity, Jet Star, Mountain princess and cherry maters too! Look for Roma green beams, sweet and hot peppers, cut herbs and maybe even some grapes if they are ripe enough!

Herb'n Renewal will have their hand blended “We Take The Guesswork Out Of Seasoning” herb blends! They love to talk herbs! Don't forget that sweet treat called Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies! And, a great selection of home crafted soaps including a crowd favorite, Shea, Goat'n Honey!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be back with Linda at the helm! Look for plenty of tomatoes including Green Zebra, Sungold and wow...about 15 other varieties including canners! Don't forget the summer squash, eggplant, peppers both sweet and hot, okra and watermelons! They might even have a few cucumbers too! Don't forget the jams...sweet and spicy!

Beyond Organic Farm will have all sorts of summer goodness like tomatoes, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, okra, cabbage and root crops like potatoes and onions and so much more!

Overman's BG Fruit & Vegetables will be loaded down with corn, tomatoes, green beans, zucchini and maybe even some beets and carrots! Homegrown goodness at its best!

Green Garden On Colby will have an assortment of potatoes...just ask which ones to use for what type of preparation! Loads of tomatoes, including some seconds for canning! Don't forget the Sangria and Charleston Grey watermelons...the good old fashioned kind!

Jane's Garden, Flowers & Herbs will be brightening our market with her colorful fresh cut zinnias! Stop by and take home some floral cheer!

AZUR RESTAURANT & PATIO

Emnett Acres will be returning with a crowd favorite...Gotta Have It sweet corn. Time is running out on this one so think about freezing some for the winter! Look for all sorts of tomatoes including full size ripe ones by the pound or cherry and grape varieties by the quart! They'll have a good supply of green peppers and okra but the squash and cucumbers are starting to slow down...get them while you can! And, this might be the final digging of the beets. The good news...they'll have their homemade zucchini bread and Caroline raspberry jam!

Valley Oak Farm makes it convenient for all of our market shoppers...you can find their farm fresh goodness at our second location too! Look for corn, tomatoes, beans, peppers, onions, potatoes, okra, zucchini ,squash, cucumbers and super sweet melons!

Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Have you talked to a “real” farmer lately? Sounds like a strange question but it really isn't when you think about it. Have you asked what type of green bean that is? What kind of corn is that? Is that an heirloom tomato and why doesn't it look perfectly round and red? What the heck does one do with that pepper...and is it hot? Should I use this potato to make “chips?” Can I grill this zucchini? How sweet is this melon? Is this organically grown? Did you really make that jam? Is that soap “vegan?” Why don't you have strawberries? Where is the lettuce? Who baked that? Are there chemicals in that meat? What kind of flower is that? Is it local honey?

I could go on with the questions that our farmers and producers are asked each week...and we love them because we can honestly answer each and every one of them! That's because we grew, raised, baked or made everything that we sell to you...our customers! Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The question of the day...should I shop at the grocery store or the farmers market? Actually, they both serve many of our needs and you need to shop at both of them because they each provide the necessities of life. I have to say that I can't remember the last time that I saw toilet paper at a farmers market! Okay, as history tells us, maybe a corn cob might have sufficed in the old days, but not now! Thank heavens for all of us! :)

Yes, grocery stores have many items that we need in our everyday life but do they have the “good for you” things like fruits and vegetables? Sure they do, but do you really know what that “homegrown” sign next to that zucchini, corn, tomatoes, mean? Heck, it could be grown in Minnesota, California, Florida, etc. for all that you know..it's home to someone! That's the reason that you should shop at your local farmers market! And, to even complicate things more...it should be a guaranteed honest to gosh homegrown farmers market like the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Knowing that you are buying nothing but the best from a farmer who actually grew the item is well worth the trip to our market!

The great part is shopping at our market vs. the grocery store doesn't stop in the fruit and veggie aisle! You'll find home baked goods, cheese spreads, herb seasoning, jams, salsa, home crafted soaps, fresh cut flowers, local honey, farm fresh eggs, meats, etc. Yup, we have just about everything but the toilet paper!

That brings us to what you'll find at our markets this week...nothing but homegrown or produced goodness at its best! We grow, raise, bake, make what we sell! Except for the farm fresh eggs...the hens do that for us but we do care for them on our farms!

RICHMOND RD.

R FAMILY FARM will be bringing their organically grown German Johnson and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, along with Chocolate, Gold Nugget and Washington cherry tomatoes! Don't forget the cucumbers, yellow and green zucchini and okra! They even have some Purple and red Basil! I did my usual Saturday morning walk through the Richmond Rd. market and I was so pleased with the variety and quality of the items that our farmers brought to the market. I have been told that the Azur Restaurant & Patio location looked just as good! I'll say it again...summer has finally arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and everyone couldn't be happier! Our farmers are thrilled to see that folks really appreciate the fact that they only bring what they grow, raise, bake or produce to the market. It makes all of their hard work worthwhile knowing that you, our customers, are enjoying the rewards!

Just have to pass on a comment that I received this past Saturday from a first time customer. She told me that it was well worth the drive to our market, even though it was in the country, to buy tomatoes and corn that she knew were homegrown. I had to giggle because while both of our market locations are not located in downtown Lexington, our farmers do not think of us as being in the “country!” I guess after some farmers drive well over an hour to get to the market, they kinda feel like they are coming to the “city!” lol The Richmond Rd. market location is less than a quarter of a mile outside of Man O' War and the Azur market is just outside of New Circle and I promise that you do not have to pack a picnic lunch in order to visit either one them! Besides, parking is always free and much easier than trying to find a spot downtown to park!

So, what will you be able to find at both Bluegrass Farmers' Market locations tomorrow? Here's a list of what our members have told me that they will have available...

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market

is Lexington's largest

100% homegrown/produced farmers market!

And, each farmer is certified...

KENTUCKY PROUD!

And all fruit and veggie farmers are...

GAP Certified

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Before I even begin to tell everyone what wonderful 100% homegrown or produced items will be available this week at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, I want to address and hopefully answer some questions that shoppers had this past Saturday.

We had a few customers who questioned the fact that we are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market because they saw farmers unloading their crops from produce boxes like the type used at a grocery store. First off, we can guarantee that every member has had his or her farm inspected to make sure that they do indeed grow what they sell! Secondly, every farmer that sells any produce has been through GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training...we insist on it before you can become a member! Now, on to the use of boxes/crates...that's how we bring our items to the market! You can't just throw tomatoes into the bed of a truck! The boxes/crates that our farmers use are clean and that assures that our customers do not get contaminated produce. The farmers buy those boxes for their specific fruit or vegetable, they are factory labeled and they are not cheap! Our farmers are proud of what they grow and they want to make sure that nothing but the best goes home with each and every customer!

That brings me to the next comments that we heard. How come all of the tomatoes look perfect? The onions were so clean! The green beans looked perfect! There's no way all of these can be homegrown!!! Oh, yes they can and they are! Our farmers take the time to peel a layer of dirty skin off of that onion. They take the time to “polish” their tomatoes so that you won't find any dirt on them,...think rain and the soil splashing up on them! When our farmers harvest their green beans, they'll toss any that they consider not perfect! If you have ever had any doubts about the honest to gosh homegrown goodness at our market, talk to the farmer...ask them what variety of tomato, green bean, squash, etc. that is. I'll guarantee that you'll get a long winded answer! lol You know why? Because they actually grew that item! They researched the different varieties to find out what does best in our climate and soil! Try doing that at your local grocery store! Are our prices a wee bit higher? Yes they may be, but think about the cost of farming...seeds cost money, gas for equipment is not cheap, hours spent in the hot sun harvesting and then the cost of bringing it to the market so we can guarantee that our customers get nothing but locally grown and always the best! Makes me wonder why we do it? That's easy to answer...we love seeing the smiling faces on our customers and knowing that they are taking a sack full of homegrown goodness back to their family!

So, the next time you see a box or crate being unloaded from one of our farmers trucks...remember that you are supporting a farmer and his or her family and you are getting 100% homegrown...guaranteed!

Okay, I hope those questions have been answered and now on to the business at hand...the goodies that will be available this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Markets!

Summer goodness is in full swing! Tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, melons, berries, etc.! What more can you ask for? Celebrate Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Happy Independence Day America! Just a little trivia for you history buffs...did you know that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which just happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Declaration! Although James Monroe was not a Declaration signer, he was the third President in a row who died on July fourth in 1831! And, Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872 and is the only President to be born on Independence Day!

Well, summer goodness has arrived at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market just in time for the 4th of July celebrations! Corn, green beans, tomatoes, squash, peppers and cantaloupes all scream summer and we've got them all plus so much more. Of course, the best part is knowing that they are indeed locally grown by one of our farmer members. Homegrown goodness at its finest! :)

We're not just a fruit and vegetable market...we have producers who bring farm fresh eggs, GMO and ASH and nitrate free meats too! Don't forget the wonderful homemade jams...both fruit sweet and pepper spicy! And, how can you pass up home baked breads and sweet treats! Local award winning wines, fantastic cheese spreads, hand blended dried herb seasoning and hand crafted soaps are available too! Heck, we even have one of a kind flowers made out of Duct tape! Granted they don't smell nearly as nice as the flowers that you see at the market, but they sure are cute!

Let's just say that a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a true local experience and one that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. :) Besides, free and convenient parking is always available. Corn and Tomatoes at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's official, summer is really here! That means we can all start looking forward to wonderful locally homegrown corn, green beans, squash, cucumbers and even some early tomatoes! Yup, you'll be able to find all of these goodies this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Yes, you read it correctly...corn is in. :) We've had customers asking for corn since the market opened the 2014 market season. We had to explain that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a 100% homegrown/produced market and sorry, it just wasn't in season in Kentucky until last week. Homegrown can mean that “someone” grew it “somewhere!” lol Not at our market...we grow what we sell! That means that our customers are guaranteed really local products and we like it that way.

Corn isn't the only summer goodie that will be available...green beans are in too. So are those wonderful for grilling zucchini and yellow squash. The vine ripe tomatoes are still a bit scarce but we will have some. Besides, now is the time to take advantage of those wonderful fried green maters. I don't know about anyone else but the first bite of that crisp cucumber means summer has arrived for me. The lettuce season is slowing down so grab some and have a fresh salad. And, if you've been eating grocery store potatoes all winter...wait until you taste a farm fresh one. The same goes for the flavor of a head of honest to gosh homegrown cabbage. Life is good at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! :)

You've noticed that we say we are a 100% homegrown/produced market. That means that not everything is “grown!” Some items are raised, baked or made by our farmers. Full of flavor meats of all varieties and cuts are raised by our farmers. Home baked goodies like zucchini breads come from our ovens. Home crafted soaps, jams, jellies, herb seasoning, salsas, etc. are all made by our members. We'll give credit to the hens for laying the eggs! Lol

Now that you know that your purchases are really supporting a local farmer, how about a list of what you will find this Saturday. Remember that this list is always subject to change and chances are you'll find much more at each market.

Summer Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's here...the official start to summer! The solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere on June 21 at 6:51 A.M. EDT. Which means 249 minutes later the Bluegrass Farmers Market will open its summer season! :) Wish we could say that we will have fresh corn, vine ripened melons and red ripe tomatoes available but unfortunately Mother Nature has not cooperated this year. Being a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market does have its disadvantages to go along with all of the great part of knowing that you are purchasing from the actual farmer who is a part of a market that actually grew that fruit or vegetable!

So, let's all celebrate summer by shopping at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Both of our locations have nothing but homegrown/produced goodness and we guarantee it! Every member farm is inspected to make sure that they are not bringing any “auction” or “produce terminal” items to our market. We do not allow any “resellers!” Okay, occasionally you might might find one of our members selling for another member simply because there has been an emergency, special event in their life or the cost of driving to Lexington just doesn't warrant them being there for lack of product offering...think harsh Kentucky spring cold weather and the lack of asparagus. We still do not want our customers to miss out on their offerings so be on the lookout for their items to be at a different booth...maybe! :) You'll see a sign to let you know that this farmer is selling for another member farmer and we still guarantee that it is homegrown and has met all of our rules and regulations!

Here's a bit of what you'll find at each market this Saturday...

RICHMOND RD.

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will be offering a special this Saturday! Breakfast sausage is only $4.50/ pound and their " Kobe" beef patties are specially priced at $5.50/ pound. Don't forget their farm fresh eggs and nitrate free bacon!

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Wow, it looks like the warm weather has sure helped our farmers crops! No, there is no corn...yet! Remember that we are a 100% homegrown farmers market and our local corn just isn't ready. But, there are so many other options available! Try something new...you might just discover a new family favorite. And, please do not be afraid to ask the farmer how to use something new to you.. They grew it, they know how to prepare it!

I will give everyone a bit of advise...if you are looking for a particular fruit or vegetable, shop early! Our farmers bring only what they have harvested from their gardens, hoop houses and fields so you won't find loaded crates from the produce auction houses as back up. Once an item is gone for the day...it is gonna be another week before you can purchase homegrown goodness! Speaking of which, remember that seasonal items like strawberries freeze beautifully with very little effort. In other words..get them while you can because it'll be a long winter! Lol Can't believe that I even mentioned cold weather other than I know how much we enjoyed our market bounty all winter long and I sure was glad that I took the time to freeze and can the spring goodies.

So, what will be available this week at our two market locations? Here's a list and who knows what else might show up in the back of a farmers truck...

Give Thanks Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Monday is a day of remembrance but not one where we grieve...but a day to celebrate the lives of those brave men and women who gave theirs so that we can enjoy our freedom! I can't think of a better way to honor them then to be with family and friends. Show your spirit and have a red, white and blue day and wave your flags proudly! Bust out the grills and feed the whole bunch grilled veggies, burgers, chops, hot dogs, etc. and don't forget the farm fresh strawberries and a nice bottle of wine for dessert!

Here's a bit of what you'll find at each market this Saturday...

Don't forget the delicious Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

Caludi's Fields will be making their first appearance at the 2104 market this Saturday! Look for their wonderful strawberries but not until around 10AM because they harvest early that morning! Something tells me that you'll find fruit jams too!
