Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It looks like Mother Nature is going to give us a wee bit of a break tomorrow...the temps will be above freezing! It will be a great day to think about shopping for your Thanksgiving meal. You know, it isn't just about turkey anymore!

Our farmers will be bringing many alternatives to the traditional “bird!” Maybe lamb from Stone Burr Farm would be a welcome change. Or possibly some veal, grass fed beef, a pork roast or maybe even a whole chicken from the folks at On Tapp Dairy. Think outside of the box this year and try something new...ask our farmers for tips on preparing the various meats. They raised them so they know what they are talking about!

Stop by and visit tomorrow from 9 until 2 at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market at Azur Restaurant & Patio. It's the perfect place to start a new family tradition!

Brrrrr Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Brrrrrrrrr, it feels like “Old Man Winter” has arrived early! It is currently a balmy 17 degrees at our farm...that's cold! And, it looks like it's not going to get much warmer in the next few days. The good news...three of our members are going to brave the cold temperatures tomorrow, so there will be a Bluegrass Farmers' Market at Azur Restaurant & Patio!

Linda, at McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing her wonderful jams and jellies and maybe even some bean soup mixes! Joseph, from On Tapp Dairy, will have their delicious veal, pork, grass fed beef , chicken and farm fresh eggs! Gene, at Stone Burr Farm, will have plenty of his fantastic lamb available!

So, show these brave folks that you appreciate them standing out in the cold by stopping by and visiting with them. They'll be there from 9 until 2!

Hope to see you all at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market at Azur Restaurant & Patio!

What's Happening At The Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Yes, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market at Azur Restaurant & Patio will be open tomorrow! So bundle up and head out to visit with our vendors. They'll be there from 9 until 2 and I can guarantee some smiles no matter how cold it might get.

I asked some of my friends for some recipes to share with all of you and seen as how Stone Burr Farm will be returning after a brief hiatus, I thought a lamb recipe was in order. I was told that this is easy and delicious...sounds great to me!

SLOW COOKER LAMB RAGOUT

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 pounds lamb stew meat, cut into 2-inch chunks

Salt...a good pinch

2 onions, finely chopped

1 carrot, finely chopped

1 cup red wine

1 28-oz. can chopped tomatoes

8 cloves garlic, chopped

1 teaspoon dried rosemary

Cooked rice...enough to satisfy your family

Grated Parmesan, optional

Warm oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Sprinkle lamb with salt and cook, turning occasionally, until browned, about 8 minutes. Dump into the slow cooker.

Drain off all but 2 Tbsp. fat from pan. Add onions and carrot; sauté 3 minutes. Pour in wine and bring to a boil, stirring to loosen brown bits at bottom of pan. Transfer mixture to slow cooker. Stir in tomatoes, garlic and rosemary. Cover and cook on low until meat shreds with a fork, 5 to 6 hours. Shred meat and season with salt if needed.

Serve over cooked rice and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.

You might want to think about some wonderful home baked potato bread from My Ole Kentucky Soap...my grandmother always told me that every meal should have something to “sop” up the juices!

Of course, I can't neglect the folks at On Tapp Dairy, so here is one of my favorite holiday recipes...it feeds a crowd! And, the farm fresh eggs make all the difference!

BREAKFAST “SEMI” QUICHE

12 eggs
4 c. milk
2 c. Bisquick
2 lbs. sausage
2 green peppers, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
2 medium onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
butter
1 (8 oz.) pkg. Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 (8 oz.) pkg. Shredded mozzarella cheese
1 (8 0z.) pkg. Shredded Monterey jack cheese
mushrooms (optional)
salt & pepper to taste

Cook sausage, drain. Saute' peppers, onions, garlic and mushrooms in butter. Beat eggs, add milk, add Bisquick and stir to blend. Pour eggs into 9"x13" pan and stir in remaining ingredients. Bake in 350º oven till browned on top and knife comes out clean, approximately 50 minutes. Enjoy!

Now that your taste buds have been tempted, it's time to go visit our members for nothing but the best and guaranteed 100% homegrown, raised, baked or made by our Kentucky Proud vendors!

But wait...there is more! Not only will you find lamb, eggs and bread each member will be bringing other goodies. Look for...

ON TAPP DAIRY will have chicken, veal, grass fed beef and pork to go along with their farm fresh eggs!

MY OLE KENTUCKY SOAP will have their hand crafted soaps along with their home baked breads!

STONE BURR FARM will be back with their lamb!

The great news, I have been told that you might be able to expect additional market members next Saturday!!! Hope to see you all at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market at Azur Restaurant & Patio!

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Is Still Open!

Well folks, I have some really great news...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market has extended its 2014 market season! Yup, that's right...the nice folks at Azur Restaurant & Patio have invited us to continue for a few more weeks. As it stands now, we'll be open through December 13th but that could change too. We'll keep you all informed. Even though the Richmond Rd. location is closed for the season, you might still be able to shop with some of your favorite farmers and producers at the Azur market. :) And, who knows, you might just get to meet some members who normally don't come to Richmond Rd.! It's a win win situation for all of us!

I have to admit that when I started creating this blog, I did not know about the decision to keep the market open so it was going in a totally different direction. I debated whether or not to include my original posting and then thought, why not! Well, at least the recipe that I was going to share. A friend of mine sent this to me and said it was excellent. I still have some market onions in a basket and I figured this was a great way to use them before they start to grow sprouts! Lol

Caramelized Onion Pie

1/2 cup butter

3/4 cup onions, thinly sliced

2 eggs

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 cup Swiss cheese

1 8” baked pie shell

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Salt & Pepper to taste

Melt butter over medium heat in a skillet. Stir in onions and cook until browned and caramelized, about 30 minutes...make sure you stir frequently to prevent burning. Remove from skillet and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs; stir in cream and salt and pepper. Add Swiss cheese and mix well. Dump in the cooked onions and mix again. Pour egg and onion mixture into a cooled, baked pie shell and sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until the filling has set and just starts to brown. Remove and let sit for 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!

Now on to the market business...what will you find tomorrow at the Azur Restaurant & Patio location of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market? Unfortunately our farmers did not know about this extension either so many of them are not prepared for tomorrow but I'm sure they will show up sooner or later. Farmers have a hard time with changes ya know! Lol

But, what can you expect to find?

AZUR RETSAURANT & PATIO

MY OLE KENTUCKY SOAP will be on hand with their potato breads and handmade soaps!

ON TAPP DAIRY will be there with chicken, veal, grass fed beef, pork, and farm fresh eggs!

And, who knows what else you might find!

Last Saturday Of The 2014 Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I sat staring at the keyboard trying to figure out what to write and all I could come up with was a great big thank you to our many customers and loyal supporters. Then my brain made a connection with my fingers and they started working and here goes...

The 2014 Bluegrass Farmers' Market season started out slowly because of the cold spring. We had market days where there were only four or five members with no produce available and I think we all began to wonder if summer would ever get to Kentucky. Thankfully, it did! Our meat, cheese, jam, herb seasoning and soap members held down the fort until the homegrown goodness arrived! It seemed like it took forever but summer did eventually arrive and our markets started to hum with farmers, producers and customers alike. We did have a few bumps along the way but we made it! It's kinda hard to explain to someone looking for corn and tomatoes in April that we are a guaranteed 100% homegrown/produced farmers market and those items just aren't in season in Kentucky until later on. And, then some sort of “bug” hit the berry crops and we did not see anywhere near the normal amount of berries this year. That saddened all of us. But, our farmers made up for it with their tomatoes, green beans, squash and amazing corn! Fall arrived a bit early this year and once again our members crops got hit with hail and frost so we lost a few farmers in the waning weeks of the season. But, the market continued and our customers still showed up each market day...again, thank you.

Aside from our main location, in the parking lot of Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs, 2014 saw the opening of our newest second market location at Azur Restaurant & Patio in Beaumont Centre. Our thanks go out to all of them for allowing us to take up some of their precious sidewalk and parking spaces. I know our customers really appreciated being able to avoid the hassle of looking for a parking space and then realizing that they could park for free and walk right into the markets was certainly worth giving you all a thumbs up from our members! Again, thank you.

Okay, now to the bittersweet part of this...Saturday is the last day of the 2014 Bluegrass Farmers' Market season. The great part is...we will be back in the spring with more homegrown/produced goodness! Stop by tomorrow and let us thank you, our customers, for making 2014 a great year for us and hopefully a great season for you too!

The only thing left for my fingers to do, is to tell you what will be available at tomorrow's markets so I think I'll end this with another great big thank you to all and we'll see you in the spring of 2015!

Karin :)

P.S. Don't forget to keep up with our market blog during the off months...I'll be sharing recipes, news about our farmers, great things to look forward to and so much more.

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Well, folks...we are getting near the end of the 2014 market season. Just two more weeks to go! It's been a rough year for our farmers. First we had a very late spring, with cold temperatures hindering growth. Thank heavens the summer was almost normal! Then the early fall frost, hail and tornadoes definitely hampered our farmers. Yup, a tough year but we did our best to make sure that our customers got to enjoy nothing but homegrown goodness. And, that will continue for the next two weeks! :)

I hope everyone took the opportunity to purchase and freeze or can all of the wonderful fruits and veggies that were available this season. I know that we did! As much as I hate to say it, I can't wait for for some cold weather...I want to enjoy that huge pot of vegetable soup that will have our market bounty in it. Oh my gosh, corn, green beans, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, squash and onions all thrown into a pot with a big hunk of meat and some herb seasoning...I can taste it now. Yummy! The great news is that you can still find various cuts of meat at the market...time to stock up on that too.

I had someone ask me why we didn't have any corn at the market. Well, my answer was the same one that I give in early April when folks ask for it. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market! Corn is not in season in April and it's already finished by October. That's the price you have to pay when you want nothing but locally grown by one of our farmer members. We think it makes us unique in comparison to other markets in the area! We grow, raise, bake or make what we sell...guaranteed!

So, what will you find at the markets tomorrow? Here's an idea of what to expect and remember...it's time to stock up!

RICHMOND RD.

First off, McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will not be at the market tomorrow, but they will return the following week with all sorts of veggies, jams and even seven bean soup mix!

Kelly's Kobe Beef and Herman's Happy Hogs will be arriving loaded down with bacon, pork chops, country ribs, fresh sliced ham steaks, cured and smoked ham pieces...think bean soup! They will also have 100% Wagyu "Kobe" beef patties, one pound plus rolls of ground beef, lots of beef roast, round steaks and pork sausage in a one pound plus rolls medium spiced and patties medium plus spice! And, everything is antibiotic, hormone, steroid and nitrate free!

The folks at Herb'n Renewal will be on hand with their hand blended herb seasonings...think chili! Their Chili Season'n has been used in various chili cook offs and the participants have won! Of course, they have plenty of other herb blends too...something for just about everything including Mull'n Spice for those cold weather warmer uppers! You'll also be able to find the crowd favorite, Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies and a replenished batch of Let's Face it and Shea, Goat'n Honey soaps! They sold out last week.

On Tapp Dairy said they would have plenty of farm fresh eggs, various cuts of grass fed beef, pork, veal and fresh chicken! If you want to know about the meat you are eating, ask Joseph about how he raises his stock! My farm is certified organic with no GMO's used!

AZUR RESTAURANT & PATIO

I wish I could let you know what you'll be able to find at our Azur market tomorrow, but I guess our farmers were busy and didn't have time to let me know. Whatever you find will be great!

And, who knows what other surprises you might find at either market!

What's Happening at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Boy oh boy, last Saturday was certainly an ordeal for our farmers...the wind was unbelievable! And, then the bluegrass got hit with tornadoes and hail. Mother Nature sure wanted us to know that fall had arrived! Let's hope that tomorrow is a wee bit better. :)

We still have three more weeks of the 2014 market season left...we're open through October 25th! And, there is still plenty of homegrown goodness available. This week you'll be able to find tomatoes, green beans, peppers, summer and winter squash, lettuce mixes, okra, pumpkins, eggplant and maybe even some kale at the Richmond Rd. market. Don't forget the home baked goods, herb seasoning, hand crafted soaps, beer cheese, beef, pork and poultry too! And, how about some fruit and pepper jams or seven bean soup mix! All of this goodness brought to you by these farmer members...McMaine's Riverhaven Farm, Caludi's Fields, On Tapp Dairy, Herb'n Renewal, Double Dip Beer Cheese and Kelly's Kobe Beef & Herman's Happy Hogs...who are running some great specials this week!

Unfortunately the hail storm wiped out Clark Farms crops so they are finished for the season at the Azur Restaurant & Patio market location. But, I do think the the folks from My Ole Kentucky Soap and maybe Caludi's Fields will be there tomorrow!

And, you never know what surprises you might find at either market...come visit and see for yourself. We'll be there rain or shine! :)

Celebrate Fall at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Fall will definitely be in the air this Saturday! Make sure you bundle up before you come to the market. Almost 90 degrees on Thursday and possible frost on Sunday...welcome to Kentucky! Lol I sure hope that we get to enjoy the beautiful fall weather before the really cold air moves in. Our spring was such a disappointment this year, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for some great fall days.

Fall also means we start seeing some new and wonderful items at the market. Pie pumpkins are spectacular! Sweet potatoes are not only good for you, they are delicious! I think the winter squash varieties have even more flavor than the summer ones! Cabbage is crisp and flavorful this time of the year! And, it's a great time to think about purchasing some extra beef and pork cuts for your freezer...think winter soups, stews and chili! Unfortunately, the cooler temps mean that the summer tomatoes, corn and green beans will be in short supply. I guess that's the price we pay for living in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky...embrace the changing seasons and enjoy what our farmers bring to the market fresh from their farms.

So, wear a jacket or sweatshirt and head out to one of our markets tomorrow to find nothing but homegrown or produced goodness! Remember, we guarantee that our members have grown, raised, baked or made everything that they sell. It's the least we can do for our customers. :)

Here's just a bit of what you'll find tomorrow...

RICHMOND RD.

OVERMAN'S BG FRUITS & VEGETABLES will be bringing probably the last of his tomatoes, yellow squash and zucchini. He'll also have his freshly harvested cabbage, cauliflower, beets and pumpkins! He'll have aged gourds too!

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS is having a Customer Appreciation Day! Look for some great sales on 100% Wagyu " Kobe " beef ...1 pound plus rolls...buy five rolls at $5.00 each and get a sixth one FREE! Medium plus spice pork breakfast sausage patties...buy three at $3.50 each and get the fourth one FREE! And, the great news...all of their products are free of any antibiotics, growth hormones and nitrates!

JANE'S GARDEN FLOWERS & HERBS will be loaded down with beautiful fresh and colorful cut flowers...by the stem or the bouquet!

HERB'N RENEWAL will be bringing extra Chili Season'n...they sold out last week! Don't forget that their Rub'n Season Herb'n All takes the guesswork out of seasoning soups, stews and veggies! And, if you'd like that outdoor grilled flavor year round, try their Smoke'n Season! Of course, the crowd favorite, Good'n Garlicky will always be on hand! Don't forget the handcrafted, detergent free, soaps! And, the wonderful Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

MCMAINE'S RIVERHAVEN FARM is hoping that Linda feels well enough to be at the market tomorrow. She had to miss the Thursday market because felt under the weather. Let's all hope that she feels well enough to join the rest of the farmers with her wonderful jams, jellies, 7 bean soup mix and a variety of hot and sweet peppers, winter squash, okra and eggplant. Hope we get to see her tomorrow!

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Fall is officially here and the weather has been beautiful! Tomorrow promises to be the same...sunny and warm! It's the perfect time to shop at Lexington's largest 100% homegrown/produced market...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! :) Both of our market location offer plenty of free parking too! Homegrown goodness and free parking...what more can you ask for. :)

When I sit down to write the entry for the blog each week, I take all of the information that our farmers email me. Apparently almost everyone must have been very busy this week because I only heard from a few farmers. So, this list might look short but I can almost guarantee that you'll find many more farmers at the markets tomorrow.

So, here's the list of goodies that I know for sure will be at the markets...

RICHMOND RD.

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will have the 100% Wagyu " KOBE " beef on sale...one pound plus rolls for $5.00 each! Breakfast sausage roll or patties for $3.50 each. (we only have the medium plus spice). The rolls weigh a little bit more than a pound! We will also have a good selection of beef roast available as well!

CALUDI'S FIELDS will be arriving with red ripe tomatoes and wonderful fruit jams!

HERB'N RENEWAL will be bringing extra Chili Season'n seen as how it is that time of the year! They'll also have their Mull'n Spice available for the first time this season. Don't forget the handcrafted soaps and the freshly baked Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

JANE'S GARDEN, FLOWERS & HERBS will have plenty of colorful fresh cut flowers available!

OVERMAN'S BG FRUIT & VEGETABLES will be bringing plenty of homegrown goodness...not sure what it will be until they harvest today!

AZUR RESTAURANT & PATIO

Wish I could say I had an idea of what will be available but I can't...I didn't hear from any of the farmers at this market location. I can guarantee that whatever you'll find will be nothing but great! :)

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day! It's the perfect time to visit the Bluegrass Farmers' Market before the autumnal equinox starts on Monday, September 22 at 10:29PM in our area. Yup, fall is almost here! But, the great news is there is still plenty of summer goodness at both market locations. Maybe a last of summer feast is in order...how about some fresh corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash and green beans cooked on the grill. Add a burger, steak or maybe some chicken to that and you can celebrate the coming of fall. And, finish it off with a slice of watermelon...probably close to the last of the season. Talk about yummy!

And, yes...the fall items are starting to show up at the market. You'll be able to find mums, pie pumpkins, sweet potatoes, butternut, acorn and other winter squash and even chestnuts!

Saturday Happenings at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Happy day before the Saturday Bluegrass Farmers' Markets to all of you! I know that sounds like a strange intro into the usual Friday morning market blog but I wasn't sure where to go with it this week. Each week I send out two emails to all of our farmers asking for their information for the upcoming week. If I don't hear from them, then I have no way of knowing what will be available. Apparently many of them were extra busy this week because I only heard from a few so this will be a short, but very sweet, list of what will be available at the markets tomorrow. I can almost promise that you will find much more! :)

It's also the time of year to ask our customers what they would like to see next year...seed ordering time is coming up faster than we know it! Our farmers aim to please so they need to know if there is anything else that you would like to have available next year. Heck, we'll take all comments about the market...good or bad. We do listen! Just email them to fromourfarms@aol.com and I'll make sure that everyone gets the messages.

Now that I have started to cause panic asking about the market next year, rest assured that we are still open and will be through the end of October! Heck, the fall crops are just now starting to come in! You'll soon see pumpkins, winter squash and fall flowers like mums! :) Until then, the summer bounty is still plentiful and guaranteed homegrown by our farmer members!

And, just in case you are wondering who the heck I am...my name is Karin and yes, I am the person who lets you know what to expect each week. It's a pleasure to keep you, our valued customers, informed the best that I can.

So, here's the market news for tomorrow...

RICHMOND RD.

KELLY'S KOBE BEEF & HERMAN'S HAPPY HOGS will be running a sale on their sausage patties...just $3.75 a pound! Look for their Waygu “Kobe” beef patties sale priced at $5.00 a pound too!

GREEN GARDEN ON COLBY will be bringing their tomatoes, potatoes, green beans and corn!

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's that time in the bluegrass...students are back in school and the pools will soon be closed in anticipation of the cooler weather to come. For some reason many folks think that this means the farmers market will be closing soon. Both of our market locations will be open through October 25th this year!

The really great news is there is still time to enjoy all of the summer goodness that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market can offer! We still have plenty of tomatoes, corn, peppers, zucchini, green beans and melons. Now is the time to start thinking about freezing or canning that homegrown goodness so that you can enjoy it all winter long. By the way, watermelon freezes beautifully...so does cantaloupe. Think about using those wonderful chunks of fruit in place of ice cubes in your holiday punch bowl!

Geez, I am getting way ahead of myself with the cool weather stuff but I just want to remind everyone that summer fruits and vegetables are still plentiful even though a new school year usually signals fall weather. We still have a few more weeks until we'll start seeing the fall goodness arrive...think pumpkins, mums and winter squash!

So, what goodies will you be able to find this week at our markets? Here's a short list to start off with and rest assured, there will be plenty more available!
