Eggstraordinary Day at The Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I love making up new words and “eggstraordinary” sure fits the market this Saturday! Our little market now has two farmers bringing eggs! That might not sound exciting to most folks, but when you are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market it is quite thrilling to have a new member with a product that everyone loves. And, who can resist a farm fresh egg. There's nothing better except when you serve them with home baked bread and homemade jam! Geez, I forgot another “eggstraordinary” favorite...how about a fresh asparagus frittata with sliced spring strawberries on the side. Or maybe an herb seasoned omelet in a bag...something the kids love! Yup, eggs are a good thing and we'll have them Saturday at the market!

The sun is supposed to be shining for most of the weekend and we sure will welcome that after two weekends of rain and wind! It makes for a perfect time to think about grilling out. How about a juicy ASH Free hamburger, topped with spring onions and crisp lettuce, nestled in a home baked herb bun. Yum, I can taste it already and you haven't even started the grill! A little bird told me that we might even have the first local tomatoes of the year this week!!! There won't be many, so shop early.

So, what else will you be able to find this week at the market? How about some beautiful hanging herb baskets, tomato and pepper plants...even some heirlooms! Maybe a daylily or a giant elephant ear to add some color and excitement to your yard! Don't forget the hand blended herb seasoning or homemade soaps! And, who could forget the beautiful cut flowers and the wonderful honey! Heck, you'll even be able to find pepper jelly and zucchini breads and cakes with a bit of chocolate added to them!  How about this for great...I was just notified that one of our farmers will have bunches of Asian greens available!  And, sugar snap peas, green garlic and kale!  It just keeps  getting better.

For a small market, we sure do have a bunch to offer. And, the great part is...it's all grown, raised, baked or made by our farmers! We guarantee that and take pride in knowing that when our customers shop at our farmers market they get to meet the real farmer. We think that's what a farmers market is all about!

Derby Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

It's Derby Day this Saturday and Kentuckians know how to celebrate the Run for the Roses! The great part is you can shop at the market and still be home in plenty of time for the festivities. And, we've got the makings for a perfect Derby party at the market!

Here's a bit of what you'll be able to find on Derby Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market...

Robert will be bringing his wonderful lettuce, asparagus, arugula, green onions, spinach and rhubarb!

Linda will be making her first appearance this Saturday and she'll be bringing her wonderful pepper jams and jellies, the freshly baked zucchini bread and her wonderful chocolate zucchini cake. And, she'll be selling farm fresh eggs for a new farmer who can't make it to the market this week!

Judy is coming loaded down with her fabulous jams, crisp asparagus and even some tomato plants for the gardener in all of us!

Jane is going to be at the market this week! So everyone can actually get to tell her how much you've enjoyed her lettuce, cilantro and strawberries..she'll be bringing more this week!

Drew and Karin will probably have their rainy day set up again but they'll have all of their wonderful herb seasoning blends, homemade soaps, catnip, white sage incense and even some fresh cut mint for those juleps! And, for those of you who enjoyed the herb'n buns, there will be more!

Vicki will be bringing her wonderful herb baskets and herb plants so you can grow your own mint for next year! Make sure you ask her about the open house that she will be having on May 8th! Don't panic, someone else will be at the market with her beautiful plants on that day.

Roger is going to start bringing some of his heirloom pepper and tomato plants this week. Look for some Alpine strawberry plants and even some herb plants too!

Our own beef gal, Lauren, will only be at the market until 10am because she has to leave early in order to register for the Flying Pig Marathon! That's right...she's going to run this year. But before she leaves you'll still be able to get her wonderful ASH free beef. Just shop early!

There are rumors that we'll have a few new farmers this week too, so come out and give them a warm welcome. And, who knows what other farmers may show up!

Who says farming can't be fun!

Yes, it's hard work but all you have to do is look at the smiling faces of our farmers and know that the members of the Bluegrass Farmers Market love what they do! They grow, they create, they bake, they raise and they come together each Tuesday from 3 until 6:30 and every Saturday from 9 until 2 to share all of their hard work with you. Smiles are free!

This Saturday you'll be able to find wonderful strawberries, crisp lettuce and garden greens, crunchy spring green onions, bright green spinach and broccoli, snappy peas, rhubarb for that pie and fresh cut herbs! No tomatoes or corn because we only sell what we grow and they just aren't in season in Kentucky yet. But hang in there, they're coming soon!

Want to grow your own fruits and veggies? We'll have berry plants and loads of tomato and pepper plants...even heirlooms! Think maybe you need to dress up your yard, deck or planters with some color? You'll be able to find a great variety of beautiful plants, hanging baskets and even some tropicals!

Maybe you're looking for a great loaf of home baked bread, or jams and jelly. How about some golden honey? Or maybe some herb seasoning. Beautiful dried beans ready for the soup kettle. Or maybe just some homemade soap. Heck, we even have Llama poo! Don't laugh, it's a great fertilizer for your garden. And you should see what can be created with the Llama wool!!!

The best part is we are all Kentucky Proud and we take it seriously! So plan to make a stop at Lexington's only 100% homegrown/produced farmers market this week. You'll leave smiling cause the farmer that grew that veggie or made that bread will be smiling at you the whole time. In case you haven't noticed, we love what we do and we love to talk about it. So a visit to the Bluegrass Farmers Market is also an educational trip!

Hope to see you at our Saturday market located in the tree lined parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet, next to Glenn Auto Mall on Richmond Rd. There's plenty of parking available. I'll update and let you know what you'll find at the Tuesday market as soon as I find out what my farmer friends will be bringing.

Happy 100% local...guaranteed!
