Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Geez, it seems like Mother Nature will not give our farmers a break. First we had temperatures above normal...fruit trees started to bud and then frost. Fields were seeded and then rain washes them away. So, our farmers reseed and then comes the very cool temperatures...with more rain! What's a farmer to do? They plant and seed the fields again and hope for the best. Farmers are resilient folks and they do what they have to in order to supply customers with the freshest possible. Sometimes it just takes awhile and your understanding that a 100% homegrown/produced market has to deal with the weather is much appreciated.

That doesn't mean that our Saturday market isn't buzzing! Here's a bit of what you'll find this week...remember Sunday is Mothers Day!

The folks a McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing their wonderful fruit and pepper jams, delicious chocolate zucchini cakes and cookies. Their hoop house grown baby kale, spring lettuce mix, mesclun, arugula and asparagus screams spring! If you are a pepper person...try their dried peppers and tomatoes too!

Caludi's Fields will be bringing their crisp asparagus and fabulous fruit jams!

Stone Burr Farm will be making their first appearance at the 2013 market this Saturday. Look for various spring lamb cuts and local honey!

The herb folks at Herb'n Renewal will be back with their hand blended herb seasonings and homemade soaps. Don't forget those sweet kitty cats and their love of catnip! You'll even be able to find some gift baskets for that special lady in your life!

We're hoping that Hughes Farm will be grilling again this week! We've been told that they will be bringing their goat and lamb selection along with farm fresh eggs!

Need a cheese fix? Larry Mac's Cheese Spreads will be handing out samples of their great beer cheese and other spreads...take home a container or two to enjoy with crackers!

Jane with Jane's Garden, Flowers and Herbs will be bringing more of that wonderful crispy lettuce, kale and don't forget her beautiful cut flowers!

Are you looking for heirloom tomato plants? Look no further...Roger Postley of Tomatoes, Etc. will be on hand with a van load of pepper and tomato plants...he sells out quickly, so shop early!

One of our new members, On Tapp Dairy, will be back with their beef, pork and chicken products. You name the cut of meat and they have it...country ham and bacon too! Hey, they have eggs also!

Rejoicing Acres will arrive at the market loaded with kale, mustard and collard greens. Sweet potatoes, butternut squash, zucchini, cucumbers and maybe even some green beans will be included too! But, the biggie will be the arrival of their hoop house grown tomatoes!!! They'll have both red and green maters this week!

Looking for something unique and different? Try stopping at the My Ole Kentucky Soap booth! They have unique homemade soaps, homemade laundry soap and even a liquid soap! The best part is, they will give you a wooden soap dish with a soap purchase! Think mom!

It's time to think about getting your deck or garden started. Check out the offerings at Botanica! You'll find herb plants, hanging herb baskets, potted plants, etc.

And, there are always more surprises each Saturday...come join us! :)

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is back!

Opening day for the 2012 season of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market was wonderful, amazing, awesome and spectacular! To put it all into one word... it was “wondamazawtacular!” I believe that is how I am going to describe the BGM from now on. :)

Our faithful customers visited us steadily all day long. They were sooooo glad to see our farmers back in their usual spaces. And, believe me, we were glad to see their smiling faces. Farmers really do love getting their hands dirty but it's the smile on the faces of the recipients of their labor that warms their hearts. We all thank you for your loyal support, it's what keeps us going!

I have to admit that I was very surprised to see local homegrown strawberries and zucchini on opening day...yup, they were there and they both sold out early! Look for more this Saturday. :)

Here's a bit more of what you'll find this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market...

STRAWBERRIES

ASPARAGUS

GREEN BEANS

SPRING LETTUCE MIX

KALE

SWISS CHARD

BOK CHOY

NAPPA CABBAGE

ROMAINE LETTUCE

ONIONS

SWEET TATERS

EGGS

FRUIT JAMS

HERB SEASONING

CUT FLOWERS

BEDDING PLANTS

HANGING PLANTERS

VEGGIE PLANTS

HERB PLANTS

HOMEMADE SOAP

HONEY

AND, SO MUCH MORE!

There is a chance of some rain but please, do not let that stop you from visiting the market. We try to make the best of a rainy day and folks can autograph their very own “Lake Bluegrass” duck if a lake happens to appear in the parking lot! Lol I'm serious...the kids (of all ages) love it. Hey, make the best of a bad situation!

So, come join us for week two of

Lexington's largest homegrown/produced

farmers market!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market Shines on Opening Day!

WOW, what a great opening day! :) Our customers were thrilled to see us back and the farmers were happy to be able to bring their farm fresh items to the market! It rained a bit, but not enough to dampen the spirit of shoppers or farmers. Thank you all for making us feel so welcome in your neighborhood.

We had strawberries, eggs, zucchini, lettuce, bok choy, nappa cabbage, kale, swiss chard, rhubarb, asparagus, onions, potatoes, baked goods, pepper jams, fruit jams, herb seasoning, dried beans, homemade soaps, bedding plants, herb plants, veggies plants and so much more! And, next week seems like we'll have even more!

What a great start to our 2012 market season...we're excited about our “new to the Richmond Rd. location” farmers. It was unfortunate that the MillPond Center market could not continue due to a little problem with a certain grocery store chain not wanting competition. Oh well, that just means that our main location on Richmond Rd. will be much bigger and have more offerings with our “transplanted” farmers joining us! :)

Stay tuned for an update on what will be available this week...it's gonna be great!!!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market Opens on Saturday!

Yippee!!! It's finally here...the opening day of the 2012 season! That's right, we open this Saturday at 9am! Okay, can you tell I am excited? lol

I have spoken to a few of the farmers and it appears that this warm spell has been both a blessing and a real pain in the you know what. Some plants bloomed way too early and therefore are spent before the market opens. That would be the case of our lilacs...they were beautiful two weeks ago. Sorry we can't bring them to the market, but smile knowing that we enjoyed the lovely color and the fragrant scent.

On the good side, many of the plants are enjoying the warmth and sunshine and so are the laying hens! Yup, eggs will be plentiful on Saturday. I can't wait to get some farm fresh eggs, the grocery store eggs have seen the last of me for the season. A few more “gotta haves” include pepper jam, fruit jams and honey. And, I can guarantee that we'll have a beautiful butter crunch lettuce salad on Saturday night. Herb seasoning and homemade soap will round out my shopping day! :)

It's gonna be a great opening day, so come by and join us while we celebrate our opening day!

Eggstraordinary Day at The Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I love making up new words and “eggstraordinary” sure fits the market this Saturday! Our little market now has two farmers bringing eggs! That might not sound exciting to most folks, but when you are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market it is quite thrilling to have a new member with a product that everyone loves. And, who can resist a farm fresh egg. There's nothing better except when you serve them with home baked bread and homemade jam! Geez, I forgot another “eggstraordinary” favorite...how about a fresh asparagus frittata with sliced spring strawberries on the side. Or maybe an herb seasoned omelet in a bag...something the kids love! Yup, eggs are a good thing and we'll have them Saturday at the market!

The sun is supposed to be shining for most of the weekend and we sure will welcome that after two weekends of rain and wind! It makes for a perfect time to think about grilling out. How about a juicy ASH Free hamburger, topped with spring onions and crisp lettuce, nestled in a home baked herb bun. Yum, I can taste it already and you haven't even started the grill! A little bird told me that we might even have the first local tomatoes of the year this week!!! There won't be many, so shop early.

So, what else will you be able to find this week at the market? How about some beautiful hanging herb baskets, tomato and pepper plants...even some heirlooms! Maybe a daylily or a giant elephant ear to add some color and excitement to your yard! Don't forget the hand blended herb seasoning or homemade soaps! And, who could forget the beautiful cut flowers and the wonderful honey! Heck, you'll even be able to find pepper jelly and zucchini breads and cakes with a bit of chocolate added to them!  How about this for great...I was just notified that one of our farmers will have bunches of Asian greens available!  And, sugar snap peas, green garlic and kale!  It just keeps  getting better.

For a small market, we sure do have a bunch to offer. And, the great part is...it's all grown, raised, baked or made by our farmers! We guarantee that and take pride in knowing that when our customers shop at our farmers market they get to meet the real farmer. We think that's what a farmers market is all about!

Here's a bit of what you'll be able to find on Derby Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market...

Robert will be bringing his wonderful lettuce, asparagus, arugula, green onions, spinach and rhubarb!

Linda will be making her first appearance this Saturday and she'll be bringing her wonderful pepper jams and jellies, the freshly baked zucchini bread and her wonderful chocolate zucchini cake. And, she'll be selling farm fresh eggs for a new farmer who can't make it to the market this week!

Judy is coming loaded down with her fabulous jams, crisp asparagus and even some tomato plants for the gardener in all of us!

Jane is going to be at the market this week! So everyone can actually get to tell her how much you've enjoyed her lettuce, cilantro and strawberries..she'll be bringing more this week!

Drew and Karin will probably have their rainy day set up again but they'll have all of their wonderful herb seasoning blends, homemade soaps, catnip, white sage incense and even some fresh cut mint for those juleps! And, for those of you who enjoyed the herb'n buns, there will be more!

Vicki will be bringing her wonderful herb baskets and herb plants so you can grow your own mint for next year! Make sure you ask her about the open house that she will be having on May 8th! Don't panic, someone else will be at the market with her beautiful plants on that day.

Roger is going to start bringing some of his heirloom pepper and tomato plants this week. Look for some Alpine strawberry plants and even some herb plants too!

Our own beef gal, Lauren, will only be at the market until 10am because she has to leave early in order to register for the Flying Pig Marathon! That's right...she's going to run this year. But before she leaves you'll still be able to get her wonderful ASH free beef. Just shop early!

There are rumors that we'll have a few new farmers this week too, so come out and give them a warm welcome. And, who knows what other farmers may show up!
