Celebrate Dad at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

This Sunday is the day to celebrate that wonderful man in your life, be he the father of your children, your dad, grandfather or a step-dad. It's Father's Day! Make him king for the day by treating him to some special meals made with honest to gosh 100% homegrown goodness from the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Start the day out with farm fresh eggs and either nitrate free bacon or non-GMO sausage and fried green tomatoes. Lunch can be a great big salad made with crisp garden lettuce mixes and salad dressing that you make with herb seasonings. And, dinner can be extra special...bust out the grill and throw a steak, Kobe burgers or maybe even pork or veal chops on it. Serve it with grilled onions, mushrooms, summer squash, new potatoes and some wonderful kale. Don't forget something sweet for dessert and a glass of local wine. Flowers on the table can make any meal extra special. Let dad know how special he is by serving him nothing but the best from the largest 100% homegrown/produced farmers market in Lexington!

Sunny Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Wow, it looks like the warm weather has sure helped our farmers crops! No, there is no corn...yet! Remember that we are a 100% homegrown farmers market and our local corn just isn't ready. But, there are so many other options available! Try something new...you might just discover a new family favorite. And, please do not be afraid to ask the farmer how to use something new to you.. They grew it, they know how to prepare it!

I will give everyone a bit of advise...if you are looking for a particular fruit or vegetable, shop early! Our farmers bring only what they have harvested from their gardens, hoop houses and fields so you won't find loaded crates from the produce auction houses as back up. Once an item is gone for the day...it is gonna be another week before you can purchase homegrown goodness! Speaking of which, remember that seasonal items like strawberries freeze beautifully with very little effort. In other words..get them while you can because it'll be a long winter! Lol Can't believe that I even mentioned cold weather other than I know how much we enjoyed our market bounty all winter long and I sure was glad that I took the time to freeze and can the spring goodies.

So, what will be available this week at our two market locations? Here's a list and who knows what else might show up in the back of a farmers truck...

Give Thanks Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Monday is a day of remembrance but not one where we grieve...but a day to celebrate the lives of those brave men and women who gave theirs so that we can enjoy our freedom! I can't think of a better way to honor them then to be with family and friends. Show your spirit and have a red, white and blue day and wave your flags proudly! Bust out the grills and feed the whole bunch grilled veggies, burgers, chops, hot dogs, etc. and don't forget the farm fresh strawberries and a nice bottle of wine for dessert!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be celebrating Memorial Day in a big way! At least in a red way...strawberries are in! Ya just can't celebrate Memorial Day without strawberries! Lol

Here's a bit of what you'll find at each market this Saturday...

RICHMOND RD.

On Tapp Dairy will be bringing plenty of meats to grill...think Chorizo, Italian brats, pork brats, pork chops or maybe a steak! All of their hogs are fed NON-GMO feed and raw milk from grass fed cows! Don't forget the farm fresh eggs!

Grimes Mill Winery will have their award winning Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Bianca wines plus many more...and you can even sample them! :) They are very proud of their silver and gold medals at the Indianapolis International Wine Competition and we don't blame them!

Jane's Garden, Flowers & Herbs will have Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, organically grown Beefsteak tomato plants and her always beautiful cut flower bouquets to brighten up your picnic table!

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will have their wonderful pepper jams, bean soup mix and loads of great baked goods...think chocolate zucchini cake for dessert! If you are looking for something new to add to your Memorial Day meal, how about some Asian greens! Don't forget the Sugar Ann peas...crunchy and delicious! Arugula and lettuce would be the perfect side dish to that grilled steak!

My Ole Kentucky Soap will be bringing their wonderful soaps made with locally brewed beer!

JP Foods will have their fantastic pimento cheese blends...try the Bourbon Smoked Pimento Cheese Spread! It's great on a grilled burger!

Tomatoes, Etc. will be bringing their heirloom tomato plants and even some herb plants like chives and parsley!

Herb'n Renewal will be celebrating in a big way...these folks love holidays! They'll be bringing their hand blended herb seasonings...something for everything that you grill be it beef, pork, chicken, ribs or veggies! And, the celebration continues with free sun visors for the kids! Yup, they will be giving away a limited supply of brightly colored visors to the little shoppers at the market...heck, you might even get your name on one! Don't forget the delicious Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies!

Caludi's Fields will be making their first appearance at the 2104 market this Saturday! Look for their wonderful strawberries but not until around 10AM because they harvest early that morning! Something tells me that you'll find fruit jams too!

Sweetgrass Granola will also be making their first appearance at our Richmond Rd. market! Look for all natural, homemade granola in a variety of flavors!

Kelly's Kobe Beef & Herman's Happy Hogs will continue their Memorial Day sale by offering their 100% Kobe beef patties for $5.50 a pound! They'll also be bringing all sorts of pork cuts including nitrate free bacon! And, farm fresh eggs too!

Overman's BG Fruit & Vegetables will be loaded down with a variety of lettuce including Bibb, Salad Bowl, Black Seeded Simpson and even some arugula!

Sheltowee Farm will also be making their first appearance at the Richmond Rd. market this Saturday...look for fantastic mushrooms!

Hutcherson Family Farm Produce is another newbie to our market! Look for strawberries, kale, broccoli, lettuce, onions, radishes, turnips, butternut squash and even some kohlrabi! If you are unfamiliar with kohlrabi, they were nice enough to share a link to give you some information and recipes. :) http:www.uvm.edu/extension/food/pdfs/local-food/kohlrabi.pdf They will also be bringing plants and if you have any special requests or want to place a bulk order, give them a call at (502) 682-9431!

AZUR

Recipe Wednesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

One of my favorite spring treats was a little slow making an appearance this year. But, take my word for it, the strawberries were worth the wait! And, chances are you were nibbling on them as you drove home from the market. :)

I have to admit that I am sort of a purist when it comes to strawberries. I like them plain or with a just a wee bit of something else. For instance, I love them dipped in sour cream and rolled in Sugar In The Raw. Love them sliced on my morning oatmeal. Drool when I see them in a bowl with cream. See what I mean...I love strawberries in all of their red ripeness! :)

Wednesday is recipe day so I thought I had better search and see how other folks enjoy their strawberries. Boy oh boy, did I ever find a site with a bunch of recipes! I believe I might even have to try the cucumber strawberry salad!

Strawberry lovers...enjoy!

http://whatscookingamerica.net/Strawberries.htm

And, we'll have plenty of strawberries available on Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Derby Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market

Saturday is “D Day” in Kentucky! If you are privileged enough to live in this great Commonwealth of Kentucky, then you know exactly what I am talking about when I say “D Day”...it's Derby Day!!! That means fast horses, plenty of fresh Kentucky spring fruits, veggies and of course...mint for those juleps!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market members will be celebrating the greatest two minutes in sports by bringing their own claim to fame...great homegrown fruits and veggies! Start your Derby Day off with some wonderful farm fresh eggs. Derby lunch would be wonderful if you included a crisp spring lettuce or mixed green salad with a vinaigrette made with fresh strawberries and award winning honey. It will soon be time to stand up and sing “My Old Kentucky Home” as the Derby contenders are led out onto the race track at Churchill Downs. Of course you'll be sipping an icy cold mint julep that has been flavored and adorned with beautiful Kentucky grown mint! Once the excitement of cashing in that winning ticket subsides, it's time for something fresh and light like a cold cucumber sandwich, steamed veggie platter with fresh asparagus or maybe just a slice of a wonderful home baked zucchini bread. It doesn't matter...it's Derby Day!

Here are a few of the Derby Day offerings from the farmers at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market...

Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I couldn't believe that I actually saw red tomatoes at the market last Saturday! Granted, they were grown in a greenhouse and there were not many of them...but what a treat after a rainy and cold day. We thoroughly enjoyed a BLT with locally grown vegetables and homemade bread! The tomato was sweet, the lettuce was crisp and the bread was wonderful!!! Honest to gosh locally grown and produced is well worth the trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. :)

Lena May's Rhubarb Custard Pie

Start by mixing up your favorite double crust pie pastry, or readying your favorite pre-made crust (just don't tell Lena May).

Then mix the following ingredients together and put in an unbaked pie shell.

  • 5 cups rhubarb, cut into 1" pieces or smaller

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 3 T. flour

  • 2 beaten eggs

Dot the top with butter. Put on the top pie crust, seal, and bake at 350 degrees for 45 -- 60 minutes. (Add 7 minutes for high altitude).

Have a wonderful holiday weekend and sure hope you spend some of it with us at the Bluegrass Farmer's Market!

It's Strawberry Tuesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Tuesday's market will be loaded with farm fresh strawberries so you can create the perfect Memorial Day dessert! Slice them and add some whipped cream, make a strawberry shortcake or just eat them in all of their red perfection! Nothing says Happy Memorial Day better than strawberries!

Here's a few little known facts about this luscious fruit...

Strawberries are a member of the rose family and are not technically a berry!

Strawberries are the only fruit with the seeds on the outside and the average berry has over 200 of them!

Eight medium strawberries only have 45 calories!

They are packed with fiber and high in folate and phytonutrients that are sure to boost your general health!

It's even said that they can help improve your memory...we all need that! Lol

The best thing about a strawberry is that it is the first fruit to ripen in the spring...we all get to enjoy them fresh from our farms!

Strawberry time at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The Tuesday market will be loaded with farm fresh strawberries!

I came home from the market on Saturday and made some freezer jam but I have to admit that I kept one in the fridge just so I could enjoy it with my Sunday morning breakfast!  It was wonderful and you can bet I'll be buying more this week!  Maybe you would prefer to let someone else make the jam for you...not to worry, there will be plenty available at the market!

If you are still searching for beautiful and useful plants, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is the place to shop.  You'll find hanging herb baskets, herb plants, heirloom tomatoes, flowering plants and maybe even a peanut plant or two!

The Tuesday market is just now starting to kick off.  When you are a 100% homegrown market it takes a bit longer to get up to full swing.  So, please be patient and enjoy the homegrown goodness that our few farmers have to offer.

Hope you all get a chance to stop by and visit our Tuesday market...stay tuned for the Saturday market information.

Tuesday Market Offerings!

Chances are this will be the last week for strawberries. I'm gonna miss those beautiful red ripe strawberries but my mouth is watering just thinking about the blueberries that will make their first presence at the market tomorrow! Blueberries are my very most favorite of all. Here's a super simple recipe that is always a crowd pleaser.

Blueberry Crisp

4 cups fresh blueberries

1 cup all purpose flour

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 cup mayonnaise

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Place blueberries into an 8 inch square baking dish. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, sugar and cinnamon. Stir in the mayonnaise and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the top of the blueberries. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is lightly browned. Serve with whipped cream. This recipe will serve 4 unless you are like me, then it will only serve 2!

Unfortunately strawberries aren't the only treat that will be making their last appearance at the market for the season. The asparagus will probably only be with us for this week and then they will be gone until next spring. Buy a bunch and freeze them for use during the winter. I just blanch mine for 2-4 minutes depending on the size, then give them an ice bath dunk. Pat them dry and spread them out on a cookie sheet and pop it into the freezer. Once they are frozen solid just put them in a plastic storage bag to keep in your freezer. That way you can just pull out the amount that you need for each meal.

The wonderful sugar snap peas and the snow peas can be frozen the same way...you'll find them at the market tomorrow too! And, don't forget about the rhubarb! Think strawberry rhubarb pie...yummy!

The Tuesday market hours are 3pm until 6:30pm...shop on your way home from the office!

Stay tuned for the Saturday market offerings and remember...

Make plans to come and visit with us especially if you are looking for beautiful red, ripe strawberries! Or maybe you're looking for something green like sugar snap peas, snow peas, crisp lettuce, mixed greens, asparagus, rhubarb or broccoli. Perhaps something in a brownish tint like the wonderful new potatoes or farm fresh eggs. Don't forget the beautiful golden yellow color of honey, beeswax candles, lip balm, home baked breads and Amish cheese. It could be that you are looking for something white and you can be sure to find plenty of spring onions too. Who said eating fresh food wasn't colorful!!!

Speaking of color, how about making your outdoors as beautiful as your plate. Our farmers will be bringing plenty of vegetable plants, bedding plants, hanging baskets, herb plants and even some tropical plants like banana trees!

Now that you have the color in your home covered how about some wonderful scents! Can you smell that kettle of homemade bean soup cooking? Or the wonderful scents of the herb seasonings while you're cooking on the grill. Maybe you just want to relax in a tub of warm water with a beautiful bar of scented soap. And, finish the day off with a bite out of a fabulous cookie or jam cake!

You'll be able to find all of this and much more this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers Market! Don't forget that if you see it at our market, you'll also see the farmer that grew it, baked it, raised it, made it or created it! We are 100% homegrown or produced...guaranteed!!!

You can find us in the tree lined parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet just next door to the Glenn Auto Mall on Richmond Rd. We'll be there from 9 until 2 and sure hope you'll come visit Lexington's only 100% grower/producer market!

What's happening Tuesday at the market!

What a beautiful day Saturday turned out to be. Mother Nature was very cooperative by holding off the rain until after the market and that meant that our shoppers could enjoy the sunshine as much as we did. Speaking of shoppers, it was wonderful to see so many new faces! I guess word is getting out that there is a market in town that guarantees 100% homegrown or produced items. It's hard to compete with other markets that have tomatoes, corn and melons available. But, we sure are glad that folks like the thought of going to a farmers market and finding items that the farmer actually grew, raised, baked or made and not stuff purchased at a terminal. It makes all of our hard work more enjoyable to see the smiles when they know we really did it ourselves!!! And, it makes the saying “buy local” all the more important.

Our Tuesday market is a bit small because many of our farmers have “real” jobs in order to support their love of farming. But I can tell you that the offerings that will be there are great. I know because our family enjoyed some of the asparagus last night for dinner and I swear, it's worth driving back into town to buy more! Something tells me that the new potatoes that I purchased on Saturday will be just as good with tonight's dinner. Might be another reason for me to drive into town cause there'll be plenty of them available on Tuesday too. Well, heck I might just as well plan on going to town on Tuesday to see my farmer friends because I missed out on the broccoli Saturday and I was assured that there will some on Tuesday. Probably ought to buy more sugar snap peas too because I haven't quite filled my freezer so that I can enjoy them all winter long. Oh, darn...I forgot about the wonderful strawberries and rhubarb! Sounds like I might be baking a pie when I get home. Now I know I'll be heading towards Lexington on Tuesday afternoon.

As you can see, there is still plenty of good stuff available at the Tuesday market. It runs from 3 until 6:30  and is located at 3450 Richmond Rd.  in the parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet.  That's next to the Glenn Auto Mall just outside Man O'War.

This bit of good news just in...there will be heirloom tomato plants available too! And, maybe snow peas!

100% local and Kentucky Proud...that's us!
