Wow, what a great Customer Appreciation Day we had on Saturday! We met many new customers and smiled at even more return patrons. But, today is Tuesday and that means the Tuesday market at our Richmond Rd. location! Here's a bit of what you'll find today...

I was walking through the Richmond Rd. market last week and I had to smile to myself. I kept thinking about the years when I shopped at a grocery store and purchased onions, potatoes, squash, etc. I had no idea what variety they were and I'll almost guarantee that the produce clerks didn't either...heck, it was a red or white potato! A red, purple, yellow or white onion! And, squash was yellow or green! Boy, am I glad that my farmer friends have educated me to the point where I actually know what potatoes are good for frying, which ones I should mash and I also know that only certain squash work great for grilling. That's the great part of a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...the farmers actually grew what they are selling and they know about their products...just ask them for advice when trying something new.
Still thinking about varieties, here's a bit of what you'll find at the Richmond Rd. location on Saturday...
SQUASH
Cousa
Zephyr
PattyPan
Magda
Yellow
POTATOES
Red Norland
Irish Cobbler
Kennebec
Wisconsin Superior
Yukon Gold
GREEN BEANS
Half Runners
Stringless
ONIONS
Candy...red and white!
CUCUMBERS
Slicing
Pickling
Burpless
CABBAGE
Nappa
Savoy
Old fashioned round head
CORN
Peaches and Cream
Ambrosia
LEEKS
GARLIC
OKRA
TOMATOES
GREEN PEPPERS
EGGPLANT
BEEF
JAMS
BAKED GOODS
HERB SEASONING
CUT FLOWERS
HANGING BASKETS
HERB GARDENS
FRESH CUT HERBS
WILD BLACKBERRIES
EGGS
HONEY
I have only received a small bit of information about what will be available at the Mill Pond Shopping Center satellite market this Saturday but what I did get is great! Look for...
Ed to bring his giant elephant ear plants and his wonderful garlic to the satellite market for this one day!
Robert will be permanently joining the new market with his rhubarb, onions, potatoes, squash, peppers and fresh cut flowers!
I am sure you will be able to find much more including corn, tomatoes and green beans.

We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I know that we enjoyed the fireworks, the patriotic music and most of all the fresh corn and tomatoes to go along with our hamburgers! To me the 4th of July holiday seems to be the real start of summer and all of the fresh goodness that comes with the warm weather. I'm talking corn, tomatoes, green beans, squash, new potatoes and peppers...it just doesn't get any better than that!
Our Tuesday market promises some great summer goodies! Look for...
TOMATOES
POTATOES
CUCUMBERS

AND MAYBE SOME BLUEBERRIES AND BLACKBERRIES!

Speaking of “both” markets, we'd just like to let everyone know that our satellite market at Mill Pond Shopping Center is still going (and growing) strong even though there are no signs up. It seems like vandals stole the 4' x 8' banners and even took the posts that they were hanging from. We're not sure who would steal farmers market signs but the Lexington Police Department is looking into it. But, we're happy to report that it will be business as usual at Mill Pond! More good news about the satellite market...it's growing in leaps and bounds! In fact, one of our Richmond Rd. farmers, Robert from Stonehome Farm is now going to be selling at the new market! That just means that our customers might find that a trip to two markets each Saturday is the thing to do! :)

This weekend is a time to celebrate. We get to bust out the red, white and blue and enjoy our freedom by watching parades, smiling at firework displays and eating summertime favorites at picnics. Yup, it's the 4th of July or Independence Day! A day to celebrate our wonderful country and the people that make it so great. That means the folks who work hard to provide us all with the one thing we all need...food! And, there's no better way to show how much we appreciate the farmers than to support them by buying locally grown, raised or produced food. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is Lexington's largest 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. That means that our farmers actually grew the fruits and veggies, raised the cattle, baked the breads, made the jams and nothing has been purchased for resale! We guarantee it, it's the way a farmers market should be.
Okay, I can't think of anything better on my July 4th picnic table than fresh grilled corn, sliced tomatoes and a juicy burger! Guess what? We have all of it available...yes, we have the season's first corn!!! But that's not all we have...here's a bit of what will be available at our two markets this Saturday.

And, that means that the summer crops are making their presence a wee bit early...look for green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and maybe even some raspberries this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Of course you'll still find some spring fruits and veggies too...look for strawberries, asparagus, lettuce, green onions, spinach, sugar snap peas and greens!
What else will our farmers be bringing to the market on Saturday? How about rhubarb, eggs, honey, baked goods, jams & jellies, herb seasoning, veggie and herb plants and hanging baskets galore! Who knows what else might make its way to the market...I am surprised almost every Saturday. :)
Wanna know what other exciting things are going to happen at Lexington's only 100% homegrown/produced farmers market? It's the 4th of July weekend and certainly a time to celebrate the reason it's a holiday. The 4th is also known as Independence Day in commemoration of the the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
I can't think of a more independent group of people than American farmers. They work the soil, they put their sweat and equity into making sure that the people of our United States of America get to enjoy the wholesome goodness that their hours of dedication provide. So, on this Independence Day weekend, we celebrate the privilege of being able to provide only the very best locally grown fruits and vegetables. Come join us in our celebration of America...our red, white and blue pride will be be in abundance!
When I say red, white and blue, I really mean it! Yup, we will have red, white and blue taters available! Think about a patriotic potato salad to go with those all American ASH free beef burgers! Nothing is more “4th of July” than fresh from the garden berries and we'll have plenty of red raspberries and blueberries! Don't forget those blackberries, although I have no idea why they call them blackberries because they certainly aren't black in color...just ask my stained purple fingers from last week's harvest!
The 4th of July is traditionally celebrated with fireworks, parades and picnics with friends and family. Wow, does the Bluegrass Farmer's Market ever have the perfect fix'ins for that picnic table!

I sat down this morning and started to type out the usual “what everyone will have” thingie and decided against a list. Instead, I am going to tell you about all of the wonderful things that we enjoyed from the market last week and the things we hope to try this Saturday.
The very first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful hanging basket full of colorful flowers. And, I loved the price too! You know that I just had to have at least one of them to hang near my front door. Then a sign caught my eye, it was for broccoli! Oh my gosh, I have been waiting for fresh broccoli and believe me I was not disappointed. We had broccoli with three meals this week! I guess we should have saved room for the sugar snap peas that are soon to be history for the summer. Not to worry, I froze a bunch! It's so easy to do. I trim, wash and pat dry then put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer. That way I can just load individual peas into a freezer bag and take out only what I want each time. :) Better hurry and get your supply before they run out!
Unfortunately, it's about the same way with the Kentucky strawberry crop...it's about nearing the end for the year. :( We'll still have some available so get your winter “strawberry fix” now. They freeze beautifully too! Or, you could make your own jams and jellies but why bother when our farmers are experts in doing it for you. I learned a long time ago that some things are best left to others and while my freezer jam is good theirs is much better.
We had friends over for a big breakfast during the holiday weekend and I have to tell you that we received raves about the farm fresh eggs. It just doesn't get any better than an omelet made with fresh eggs, spring onions, spinach and a slice of zucchini bread...oops, forgot the ripe tomato slice that added all of the color to our plates!
So, what do you need to put on your market list for this Saturday? Sugar snap peas, strawberries, asparagus and lettuce are going to be in short supply soon so enjoy them while you can. The good thing is you can add some new things to your list, like squash, new potatoes, green beans, leeks, cabbage and the start of the tomato season! The great part about being a 100% homegrown market is that you never have time to get bored with any one veggie! It's true, we're about “lettuce saladed” out and now we have broccoli and tomatoes to enjoy! Heck, corn will be here before we know it...I am not holding my breath but it won't be long.
I believe that it is time for me to get myself busy getting ready for the Saturday market just like the rest of our farmers. Don't forget that you can always find the Kentucky Proud value added items such as baked goods, soaps, herb seasoning and honey. We'll even have some good stuff for you to sample this Saturday at the market!
Shopping at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is purely a local experience and one that everyone should enjoy. Our farmers work hard each week so that you can take home nothing but homegrown goodness to share with your family and friends...that's what local is all about! Having said that, we sure would appreciate your vote in a contest for America's Favorite Farmers Market. We could win all sorts of goodies that we get to share with our customers. So, please help us by going to http://www.farmland.org/vote and vote for the Blue Grass Farmers Market. Our farmers will be thrilled to know that you all appreciate the fact that they grow, bake, raise or produce everything that they sell...100% guaranteed!

Yup, that's right...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is now open on Tuesday too! Hopefully Mother Nature will be a bit kinder than she was last Saturday. Our loyal farmers showed up in the pouring rain and so did our great customers. Thank you so much for your continued support even though many of you had to walk through “Lake Bluegrass” to reach us! If it ever happens again we can promise that there will be market ducks swimming in the lake just so we can all smile a little bit.
Okay, now for what you'll be able to find at the opening of the Tuesday market, it's going to be a plant lovers dream come true!
Tomato guy, Roger will be there was an assortment of heirloom tomato plants, Alpine strawberry plants, pepper plants and even some herb plants!
Ed, the banana tree fellow, will be bringing quite a mix of plants including...daylilies, hot pepper, canning tomato, various veggies, tropicals including giant elephant ears and of course...a few banana trees!
Our newest market member, Jonathon, is coming all the way from Maysville loaded down with hanging flower baskets, bedding plants, ferns, Wave petunias, mixed planters and tomato plants in containers and even hanging baskets for those of you who don't have a yard to plant in!
Like I said...it's gonna be the place for plant lovers to be on Tuesday! The great part is, they are all locally grown by our members so you can ask all sorts of questions about the planting and care of your purchase. They grew them so they know their plants!!!
Hope to see everyone at the opening of our Tuesday market! The hours are 3:00 until 6:30 and as always we will be set up in the beautiful tree lined parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet next to the Glenn Auto Mall on Richmond Road just outside Man O War! Parking is always free and very convenient!

September is one of my favorite months of the year. Most of the warm summer crops are still available at the farmers market and some of the cooler fall crops are starting to make an appearance. It just doesn't get any better than that!
We can all still enjoy ripe tomatoes, freshly picked corn, wonderful green beans, tantalizing hot and sweet peppers, newly harvested potatoes, fresh cut rhubarb and sweet treats like watermelons, cantaloupes and raspberries!
And, we're just starting to see some of the cooler weather crops like kale, onions, garlic and shallots!
~*~ All 100% homegrown on our farms! ~*~
Don't forget about the beautiful and colorful flowers that will bring a smile to anyones face! Or, the herb seasoning that can make a chef out of anyone! How about some of those wonderful jams and jellies! And, the great beer cheese! Tender and flavorful ASH Free beef! Farm fresh eggs and Amish cheese that can't be beat! Home baked goods that will make you drool! Handmade soaps are a luxury only they are not luxury priced!
~*~ All 100% raised, grown or produced by our farmers! ~*~
September also has a day that we, as Americans, need to remember. September 11th! Please take a moment out of your busy schedule to remember those that lost their lives on 9/11 and to thank our service men and women for continuing to keep us safe.

It might be a holiday but our farmers are busy working today so that they can bring the freshest and the best to the Tuesday market. Hopefully they will take some time off today and enjoy a traditional Labor Day cookout with their family and friends. I know we will be grilling some wonderful veggies that I bought on Saturday to go along with the great steaks that I also purchased. I love the way our farmers support each other!
This week you'll be able to find juicy tomatoes...even heirloom ones! There will be heirloom peppers too! In fact, there will be peppers in all sizes and shapes, hot or sweet, big and little! The potato varieties are numerous with “spuds” that make wonderful salads, some that are great for baking, others that are wonderful boiled and mashed. Don't forget that taters are great on the grill too! There's still plenty of raspberries, rhubarb and watermelons available. Oh, and don't forget the beautiful green beans...they went fast on Saturday! So did the colorful flowers and fresh cut herbs. I think they probably will end up as centerpieces on more than one picnic table today! And, how could I forget the wonderful jams, jellies and butters!!! Talk about big flavor in a jar! If your sweet tooth gets the best of you, try a delicious jam cake.
Yup, homegrown goodness galore at our Tuesday and Thursday market! I'll be updating again on Thursday so you all will know what we'll have at our bigger Saturday market, so stay tuned!
