It's March 9 today, and everyone I know is feeling lethargic. The sky is overcast, and the occasional sunny day, while appreciated, also throws these gloomy days into a sharp relief.
Ah, but there's hope! Hope in the form of tiny seedlings emerging under the humid glow of fluorescent lights, in a comforting array of wavelengths.
As wet as it is now, it's hard to believe that a few years ago we were able to do a lot of spring planning around March 15th. It sure won't happen that way this year. Being a CSA operator can be frustrating in this sense, especially when a lot of people have a skewed sense of the seasons. Whether this is caused by the marketing people at our big box stores, or something else, it can make it hard to explain why some weeks there are deliveries, and other weeks there aren't.
A recent, anonymous reviewer took us to task recently for not delivering on some days last year that happened to be holidays. The implication, I guess, is that we were out partying on those days. Nothing could be further from the truth. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and every other holiday during the growing season was happily spent on the farm. Deliveries are dictated by what's available at any given time, and nature takes no holiday.
CSA customers share in the success of the enterprises they invest in, but also in the disappointments. It's part of the deal, and the good times can be great. If you're a CSA member, stick with it. You'll see that the good seasons will outnumber the bad, and you won't regret it.
