Farm fresh… Naturally!

Well, here we are at Harvest Time. My favorite time of year! Our herbs are ready to dry, the vegetables are ripening and going to market soon, and the whole farm has a feeling of completion and satisfaction.

The Heritage Breed Turkeys we have this year have been really fun to raise. We took on four different breeds this year to determine which one we would like start breeding. The breeds are Royal Palm, Spanish Black, Bourbon Red, and of course, the Big Bronze.

Each one has their own special personality and it's becoming more and more difficult to decide on just one breed!

The Bronze has a much more aggressive personality and seems to like to bully the others. The Blacks are easy going and so are the Bourbon Reds. I tend to like the Royal Palms more than the others, now that I think about it. They talk to me and are easy to read. I can understand their little chortles and their warning calls. They all have a sleepy-time song that they do when it's bedtime. I like going out there at dusk and watching them come in to roost. Once they settle on a roost, they get themselves situated and then they start their quiet little song.  It's a peaceful feeling for me.

I think that's why all of our animals roam together and get along so well. I can let the turkeys out to free range in the open gardens and the dogs will check on them (and so will Louise, the cat!) - and no one gets excited or threatened. It's amazing! My favorite scene is from my front deck: The turkeys will lay in the green grass with their wings spread out, the dogs will be laying on and around the deck and the kitties will be wandering through it all. I realized at that moment how truly blessed I was.
