Turkey time!!

As you may know we have not blogged for a while...boy are we busy!!  And as we scramble to catch up we realized that we are in the final stretch for the poultry season!! Our organic 15-17 lb. turkeys are being harvested this week and next with the next size ranges following shortly after.  We will be harvesting in the 15-17 lb. range, 18-20, 20-22, 22-24 and the "Oh my Gosh I'm not sure it will fit in the oven" size the beginning of November (we keep three of these for our family gatherings and we love leftovers, especially "me" the cook who does not have to cook for three to four days!!).   We are also about to complete our organic chicken season with only two more harvests left before we shut down for the winter...sorry, way too hard to keep those little chicks warm during the winter so we just fill up our freezer and call it quits for six months!!  Nothing like the beautiful view of a freezer full of farm fresh meats and even better the thought of not having to go to the grocery store!!!  Can you tell I love to stay on the farm!!   We are also making a run out to M&M Ranch for their organic peaches (we use these for our preserves until our trees start producing, hopefully next year!!) this week and they are $1.25/lb. so if you want me to pick you up some for your canning please just let me know and if you are looking for organic chicken or turkey just email us at moonstruckfarms2@verizon.net and we will drop you all the details! 
 
 

200 plus trees planted!!

Well, this does not really show a fantastic picture, but all the little brown things on the ground are tree protectors on the trees....better pictures once they get bigger and bloom. The trees are just minus some mulching, tree protectors and tags. We also put some vetch in to see if it will do well as a living mulch. The vetch is already out in the West field and comes back for about 75% of the year to feed the chickens a high protein snack. The grapes are taking a little bit longer because they are being put on a area that was tractored quite a bit and so Michael and the granite are having a disagreement, but if anyone knows my husband the granite will lose. The last 40 holes along the fence line should go quickly and all grapes are on somewhat of a slope with a southern exposure for drainage and optimal light. They are all Cabernet and Merlot grapes except for four seedless Flame I added near the end (well Dave Wilson added them and I just kept instead of calling for the millionth time!!) We were shorted some trees and there is a little bit more room on the Southeast side so I think I will add 50 more this next year if all goes well and add in an additional apple, some pears and nectarines and maybe a couple olives. Saturday was my favorite working day of the four so far, and that is when all three of my girls were out there along with Olivia and her daughter Addie (alias Great Customers and Friends). It was "Girl Power" day and the energy made the day go so quickly and by far was almost the most productive....the day Michael augured almost all the tree holes takes 1st Place. Well, I am just a little tired to say the least, but note sore?? I guess I am in better shape than I thought...well one more day of planting and then Saturday is irrigation day right after it rains hopefully. Though I must say "Thank you Lord!!!", the rain, the snow, the weather for planting all was perfect!! This was a huge step for us and I was more than just a little anxious about getting this done, but then everything fell into place so perfectly!! It could not have gone any better!! One of our major goals this year has been to become "tourable", and I believe by the end of March we will be there. I went ahead and told a Boy Scout troop to come on out!! Can't wait and they even asked for a project to do....I can't wait...they are 1st and 2nd graders!! See ya all soon....Moonstruck signing out!!

 
 

Summer is in Full Spring and it is time to store!!

August through October are busy months around here at Moonstruck.  The onions are being cured.  The tomatoes are coming in and being frozen or canned.  It is the beginning of apple season and thanks to Brian Ranch Orchard we are canning applesauce already.  Peaches from Valle View Ranch were made into peach jam and the jalapenos are being frozen for Jalapeno Burgers or my favorite green salsa recipe!! This is not to mention the root crops are being squeezed in everywhere they can be and the greenhouses are being prepped for lettuce and the doors will be shut soon with the approaching Fall weather.  I woke up this morning and it was 62...time to close up the old greenhouse I told Michael.  I will vent with the front door and the above head irrigation for the remaining hot days.  We need to preserve as much of the ground temperature as we can and if we don't close up at night we will lose tons!!  The pigs are feasting on the extra large zucchini, patty pans, cracked tomatoes and lots of eggs...their absolute favorite!! Filet is becoming friendlier each day and her tongue is now licking me every chance she gets...it actually abraised my hand today....maybe she is seeing how I would taste!!  The chickens are laying like crazy so eggs are being frozen for winter baking so that more eggs will be available to the customers and eggs are being tucked in the refrigerator for hard boiled...yes they have to get old to be easily peeled!! We also found a great spot for the cellar and just prior to the 50 new fruit trees arriving in January we will dig the 50 holes and the cellar hole...basically we have decided to build another small basement.  We know how to do block walls so might as well stick with what we know best.  Thanks for all your support...we would not be where we are without everyone's support....customers and fellow farmers!!  Moonstruck signing out!
