What a year for my family! At the beginning of the year, we purchased a 20 acre farm and decided that we would farm it. Oh sure, easy right? Haha! If only we had known what we were jumping into. We had kicked around the idea of a pumpkin farm for three or four years. In January, 20 acres of farmable land came available at an exceptional price and we dove into this adventure head first. Our 9 year old son was very excited to grow his favorite vegetable and so our exciting farm journey began.
We are farming by hand just like they did 100 years ago with the exception of our tiller. Even with the tiller, our 1 acre pumpkin garden is a task to complete. (Might I add that my husband and I have wonderful farmer tans) Our son becomes this elusive creature when its time to plant, weed, or fetilize. However, I can find him quickly when the garden needs to be watered. Its after watering that I can always tell how many times he ran through the sprinkler as he worked hard to water the garden.
Farming this way is very enlightening and surprisingly fun, despite the hard work. Our pumpkins will definitely be products of hard work, vast amounts of time, generous quanities of love and numerous belly laughs. What an adventure this will be for my family and we hope to bring each one of you along for the ride.
I hope to update our blog weekly to highlight our family adventure and to include a weekly pumpkin recipe that our family loves.
