Quinoa, the super food. Order some today.

Quinoa

At Home Farm Herbery our Quinoa or White Quinoa is also called ivory quinoa and we use it in puddings, curry, salad, pilaf, bread, soup and baking.  It has a mild and pleasant, nutty taste and a delicious aroma. It has been prized by civilizations for thousands of years as a super food of sorts, as it is rich in protein, iron, magnesium, dietary fiber, magnesium, phosphorous and iron!

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has officially declared that the year 2013 be recognized as "The International Year of the Quinoa
Also Known as: Quinoa Grain and Quinoa Seed.

Ingredients: Prewashed White Quinoa

You can substitute it for Quinoa Flour, Amaranth Grain, Bulgur Wheat, Teff Grain, Hemp Seeds or Kamut Grain Organic and we use it with pinto beans, pumpkin seeds, scallions and coriander. Season to taste and enjoy this south-of-the-border inspired salad. Add nuts and fruits to cooked quinoa and serve as breakfast porridge.

For a twist on your favorite pasta recipe, use noodles made from quinoa.

Sprouted quinoa can be used in salads and sandwiches just like alfalfa sprouts.

Add quinoa to your favorite vegetable soups. Ground quinoa flour can be added to cookie or muffin recipes. Quinoa is great to use in tabouli, serving as a delicious (and wheat-free) substitute for the Bulgar wheat with which this Middle Eastern dish is usually made.

Zaatar organic seeds. Plant some today

Zaatar Seeds Organic

Hardiness to 20 degrees F

 (Origanum syriacum)

Our Home Farm Herbery Zaatar Seed produces a woody perennial native to the Middle East.  This is a spicy smelling and tasting oregano-like herb that is the keystone herb in the condiment "Zaatar," which is a delightful combination spice used quite frequently with pita, garlic and olive oil.

This plant prefers full sun and dry to mesic soils. Sow seed in the spring, in pots or flats or directly in the garden. Traditionally used in a Middle Eastern seasoning mixture with olive oil, garlic, salt and other herbs and spices.

You mix the dried and powdered herb with various other ingredients--garlic, salt, olive oil, crushed sumac seeds, etc. and use it on bread.  It is quite delicious and habit forming in a good way. Zaatar is one of the sources of the antiseptic essential oil known as carvacrol, which (along with other terpenoids such as thymol) inhibits several kinds of nasty bacteria (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa) by eroding the bacterial cell wall. Plant prefers full sun and sandy, fast-draining soil. This seed makes an abundant crop of leaves in the first growing season.  Make sure to harvest in the first year of growth as the overwintering of this plant is never a sure thing.

When you sow this package of seeds you are taking part in the preservation of healing plants worldwide.

Echinacea Purpurea Seeds are now available for fall or spring planting

(Echinacea purpurea) Herbaceous perennial.

Our Home Farm Herbery Organic Perennial Echinacea Purpurea Seeds are now

available to sow seed outdoors in very early spring or fall. This plant prefers full sun, with well drained, limey soil and regular watering. It is a beloved medicinal that is used for its immune enhancing properties.

Cultivation: Sow seed in the early spring in flats outdoors or in the greenhouse, and transplant seedlings out to the garden or field in mid-spring (middle of May in our area). Starting earlier, and transplanting twice into progressively bigger containers will result in a much better rooted transplant, which will probably flower in the first year. It is fairly easy to seed this plant directly in the garden or field. Sow the seed shallowly in the early to mid-spring. Keep moist. Once the plants are up, you must stay on top of the weeds, and thin to 1 foot spacing after the second set of leaves has formed. E. purpurea likes full sun, plenty of water, and rich, limey soil. This is the species best suited to varied growing conditions, whether coastal or mountain, east or west. It is easy to grow, and produces on the average 1/2 pound of fresh root by the dormant period following the second year of growth.

Plant 1 foot apart.

Flowers 3 to 4 feet tall.

Ashwagandha Seeds Organic Rare seeds for sale

Ashwagandha Seeds Organic Rare

(Withania somnifera)

Home Farm Herbery Organic Ashwagandha Seeds are a herbaceous perennial in the tropics, annual in temperate zones. Start indoors and transplant as you would tomatoes. It does not tolerate cold conditions well. Ginseng-like Ayurvedic tonic is used mainly for physical and mental exhaustion.  Plant 12 inches apart in full sun and it grows from 24 to 36 inches in height and 9 to 12 inches in diameter producing eventually the lantern-like pods enclosing the pea-sized fruits, green at first and becoming bright red as the inflated calyx dries and becomes transparent.  This plant produces pretty little winter cherries.  Hardiness to 15 degrees.  Cooler than zone 8, Ashwagandha is best grown as a summer annual or it grows well in a pot.  If grown in a cooler climate we advise getting an early start, as the plant really requires a 200 day growing season to reach full maturity.  Plants grown for 100 days still produce fine roots for medicinal use, but the yield is less. Sow in early spring indoors or in the greenhouse.  Average germ time 15 days.

Easy to grow, unusual and useful, also an increasingly popular herb for selling and taking. Dried root is a Ginseng-like tonic of Ayurveda. Traditionally used as a sedative, aphrodisiac, anti-diabetic and general tonic, the anabolic activity of the herb is particularly well suited for treating those who are depleted of energy and lack sexual appetite.  The herb builds energy and jing.  Having trouble getting the old engine to turn over?  Need something to help grease the crank?  Try taking 1 gram of Ashwagandha powder in milk or ghee, morning and night.  Your partner will be impressed.
