About the Five Little Homesteaders

Five Little Homesteaders tells the story of Colleen and her husband’s urban homesteading adventures with their various chickens and three, young children. They hope to inspire people to challenge the mainstream way of thinking about food production, consumption, health sustainability, and self sufficiency.

They live in the heart of downtown Phoenix, on a .15 acre lot and their goals as urban homesteaders are to produce as much of their own food as possible, teach and show their children about where our food comes from, be good stewards of the earth, cook mostly from scratch, using whole food ingredients, prepare themselves to be as self sufficient as possible, and simplify their daily lives through less screen time, more togetherness and less “stuff.”

Pure Beeswax Candles Review and Giveaway by Domestic Geek Girl

Pensacola, Florida -- On her blog Domestic Geek Girl, Gingi recently reviewed 100% Pure Beeswax Candles from The Mohawk Valley Trading Company. In addition, she’s holding a giveaway for an assortment of beeswax candles. The candle bundle includes; one 2” x 6” 100% pure beeswax pillar candle, two 100% pure beeswax votive candles, two 100% pure beeswax taper candles, six 100% pure beeswax tea light candles, and twelve 100% pure beeswax birthday candles.

“I made the switch from paraffin to beeswax when my daughter was born, when I discovered that paraffin candles are one of the absolute WORST offenders to indoor air quality,” says Gingi. “The scent does not amplify while burning, but the gentle floral tones do linger. (I never thought of candles as an air freshener, but now I am addicted to the lovely honey scent that permeates my coat closet now!).”

In addition, she is holding three giveaways; one jar each of Raw Buckwheat Honey, Raw Tulip Poplar-Black Locust Honey, and Raw Sunflower-Summer Wildflower Honey; another for a 32 oz. glass jug of maple syrup; and one for an assortment of 100% pure beeswax candles.

About Heather

Heather began her journey with her family into homesteading in 2006. They bought their first house, and attempted to start their first garden. As the years passed they learned more, tried new things, added laying hens and began their journey toward self sufficiency.

Her kids raise meat birds, turkeys, and rabbits for 4H, so those are naturally added each year. Having a manicured lawn no longer has precedence, and they enjoy what they call their “poultry vision,” much more than any TV show or movie.

Her hope is to encourage her readers to start where they are at, and just do what they can do. Heather believes each of us can make a difference, but only if you try.

Peanut Butter and Comb Honey Puff Pastries with Lavender Recipe - Domestic Geek Girl

Pensacola, Florida -- On her blog Domestic Geek Girl, Gingi recently released a new recipe using comb honey; Peanut Butter and Comb Honey Puff Pastries With Lavender.

“Jonathan and I set out to make some fancy hors d’oeuvres using comb honey, we were surprised at the lack of recipes on the internet for such a unique, tasty and classy looking natural health food,” says Gingi. “This was our first idea for utilizing comb honey in an appetizer, mostly because my favorite pairing with honey is peanut butter. This is an elegant twist on a good old fashioned peanut butter and honey sandwich.”

Virginia Beach, VA -- On her blog Mini Macks, Charity recently reviewed Natural Handmade Soaps, Maple Syrup, 100% Pure Beeswax, and Beeswax Candles from The Mohawk Valley Trading Company.

“Rory excitedly tried each new bar of soap: Castile Soap made with 100% olive oil; shea butter enriched Tea Tree Oil Soap; and the winner, Goat’s Milk Lavender Soap,” says Charity. “Ryder is a no-syrup pancake kid and yet I couldn’t get him to stop licking the table where it was dripping from the bottle.” One of Charity’s book club friends tried the syrup too and said, “Better than fresh syrup from Michigan or Vermont. Thick, dark and rich without being too heavy with a smooth finish. Perfect for crepes!”
