Five Mountain Farm Shickshinny, PA
We are a small family farm in McKendree Village, about 5 miles outside of Shickshinny, PA. Our farm is 120 acres, with a diverse landscape of woodlands, wetlands, pastures and meadows. Our hemlocks are still quite healthy, and we also have some large healthy stands of beech trees. Some of our favorite wildlife on are farm includes grouse, woodcock, bobolinks, wild turkeys, a healthy porcupine nest and pheasant. (Although, since our vegetable farming, we still have some mixed feelings about the deer!) In 2001, we were happy to join farmland preservationists by putting our farm into the Luzerne County Agricultural Easement Program. Now it can only be used for agricultural purposes, no housing development.
While we farmed certified organic vegetables for 10 years, we pulled in the reins a bit in 2008 to work on completion of our solar powered straw bale house. Although we are now moved in, it's still a work in progress, as it goes when it's D-I-Y!
