Maple Syrup Season is in Full Force!

The Maple Syrup season is in full force, and what a strange season it's been.  It started okay and about on time --around the 2nd week of February is average in Connecticut, but it got warm fast and then went cold for a number of weeks, completly shuting off the sap.  Last week was the first full week of the classic 20 degree nights and 40 degree days--needed for good sap flow.  All in All the quality of the syrup is excellent this year--because of the cold, but the quantity of the sap is low, so not too much sryup being made.  It's fun though, and makes a great gift and nice addition to the farm stand.  Certified Organic Syrup For Sale!

A Chill is in the air!

November 17, 2008  Winter is just around the bend, you can really feel it tonight.  With the temperatures set to touch the teens for the next five days or so, I'm sure we will feel the frost in the ground for the first time this season.  Our winter rye is just up enough, carpeting the soil with it's beautiful green protection, it always amazes me how fast it grows in the fall--especially under such cool conditions.  Oh, Yeah, and we got our first seed catalogs!  What to grow, what to grow, now that's a good problem to have!

Sleeping Garlic!

Well the Garlic is officially planted and cozy under a bed of straw.  The gardens are growing winter rye.  Thanks to all who support local farms - It's wonderful to see so many actually interested in the quality of food they are eating.  Time for a cup of tea!!
