We are raising Buff Chanticleers, Rhode Island Reds, and wide range of other chicken varieties in our flock. As time progresses we'll be focusing on more Heritage breeds and keeping them on a very pasture based program as our Wisconsin weather permits.
Our hens are kept in a small open coop throughout the winter with their own "greenhouse addition" that we load with compost throughout the winter. The compost is then spread on our garden in the spring. During the summer they're either allowed to roam free-range in a fenced area, or kept in movable pens that are moved twice each day.
