70 days. Heirloom. O.P. Black Eyed peas are easy to grow anywhere there is plenty of heat. They grow fast and need little care. Heat and drought tolerant, they will produce better if they receive regular water. Shell them and eat them fresh when the peas are plump in the pods but still green. Or. let the peas dry in the pods for storing and eating on New Years Day with rice (a Southern tradition). Black eyed Peas are an ancient crop from Africa. Thomas Jefferson grew them in his famous garden in the 1770's. They require little in the way of fertilizer, and enrich the soil they grow in. Vigorous growers in the heat, so give them room. We plant in 4' rows and they make a solid mass that crowds out weeds. We also use them for summer cover cropping and green manuring. Plus, you can feed the greens to your animals. A versatile crop that belongs in any self sufficeincy nut's garden where the summers get hot. Germinated at 94%.
